That Noble M12 report wasn't spectacular but still interesting.

If you see a movie like this you realise why a low volume supercar is so expensive.

Should have costed you some time to collect and edit all the pieces together.

During the telecast, Detroit's own Kid Rock rocked the house all night as he performed Cowboy and Son of Detroit. Legendary auto designer and race-car driver Carroll Shelby received the only award to a human being - The Icon Award - acknowledging a true giant in the auto industry. Jay Leno of the Tonight Show was featured in a taped tribute to Shelby.

Special appearances were made on the telecast: Vivica A. Fox, Beth Ostrosky, Brooke Burke, Amber Campisi (Miss February, Playboy Magazine), Randy Couture and Spike TV's resident car expert, Funkmaster Flex.

thx for the new vids AlienDB7.

I've just read about the history of Morgan in a paper. And I must say it was very interesting. Morgan means threewheeled car. Because they stated with cars which had 2 wheels at the front and 1 at the back (you can see one in the video).

The impression I get from the American version of the Morgan Aero 8 is that it has lost it hard core sportyness in search for more lighter controlls. Anyway, the chassis probably still is very good so...

The end of the video says it all really. If you know the history of Morgan, you somehow appreciate the cars more.

Thanks for the video. It's quite nice!

I really like that color on the Elise. I understand the need for adaptation of the car to the market but the guy from Car & Driver is right. Normally they screw up the cars when they adapt it too the US market. When they import US cars in Europe on the other hand, the driving dynamics are gerenally improved :D So as a car freak I suppose I can call myself lucky for living in Europe.
The advantage of the Americans however is the low car & fuel prices however and that's not something you can easily ignore. 40.000 dollor for a Elise is about 30.000 euros and that seems cheaper then in Belgium.

20.000 dollar for an Elise (like the reviewer says)... sorry but that's a bit much too ask isn't it.

Always looking forward to your new videos. :!:

same here! glad you've uploaded a few new videos!!

I had allready seen the "counterfeit mini" site but not the video, pretty cool :D

You're right about the Viper video. That's a nice one!! I've seen a new Viper racing from the Dutch Supercar Challange before and I've talked to one of the technicians. He said the new Viper isn't any competition for the old one because it only has 520hp... in the GT class that isn't that much. Still, it looks better then the first Viper IMO!

The explanation of the rotary engine was also nice. Not too short, not too long! I'm glad the RX-8 exists but it seems there was much more fuss about the RX-7 when that was launched...

Thanks for the videos! Particularly the Viper vid. When they showed the Competition Coupe crash, that was Canada Corner at Road America. I was at the race. You can't really tell, but right next to where he crashed, there are bleachers for people to sit. I saw the whole thing happen! You wouldn't believe the noise it made slamming into those tires! It was extremely loud.
It's hard ot tell because the video is in slow motion, but he slid off the track and through the sandtrap in a split second.

AlienDB7, thanks alot for the C6 vs. 997 vid, great capture, there is something wrong with Car and Driver, they tested the standard 997 and not the Carrera S, otherwise the Porsche would have won because the Carrera that they tested was 70 hp lower than the C6. It only lost by one point as well, it outbraked and outhandled the C6.

I agree with you Brembo. And if they wanted to compare the C6 to something in it's priceclass the 997 wasn't an option anyway, so why don't go to the model dynamically closest to the C6. Still a nice review though!

thx AlienDB7!!!

dingo
03-30-2005, 08:57 AM
well there is already a big price difference between the C6 and the 997, so the 997 S would only widen that gap further
However no matter what they say I think most people (well non-Americans anyway :P) would take the 997 in a heartbeat......I love it, a big improvement over the 996 IMO by bringing back some styling cues from the sensational 993 :D
Thanks for the vid Alien, very enjoyable :D

03-30-2005, 05:27 PM
Thanks Alien for the video. I always love seeing the 997. BTW the host on the video, Larry Webster, is a 911 fan and if I remeber correctly has owned one himself.

Dingo not all Americans are stupid. We know a good thing when we see it too. That is why 1/2 of all Porsche sales are in the United States :P .

Personally, I would pay the $20k for the 911 rather than getting the vette. IMO there is more to driving a car than statistics and based on my personal preferences the intangible factors that the 911 possesses would make it worth the extra cash. For someone else who values other characteristics I could see how they could say the same thing about the vette. It is all a matter of personal preference IMO.

Having said that I think that it is rather amazing that Chevy has put together a car that is able to statistically speaking stay with the 911 for much less money. The same could be said for the M3. Although I am willing to bet the margins on the 911 are higher than the vettes. The rivalry between these two cars has been entertaining over the years. The vette had the upper hand on the track for most of the 80’s. But since then it has been rather close. For any year though my choice would be the 911  .

Just posted couple of new videos to draak's webspace. Got a bit surprised at the performance diff by using regular (87) instead of premium (92) on the porsche.
Sports Car Revolution - Caterham 7 Roadsport SV.mpg (http://users.pandora.be/draak999/Sports%20Car%20Revolution%20-%20Caterham%207%20Roadsport%20SV.mpg)
Sports Car Revolution - Regular vs Premium Gasoline (Porsche on Dyno).mpg (http://users.pandora.be/draak999/Sports%20Car%20Revolution%20-%20Regular%20vs%20Premium%20Gasoline%20(Porsche%20 on%20Dyno).mpg)

Concerning the 911 vs. C6 issue, it's really hard to say which car is better. It's like comparison supermodels  If money isn't an issue, I would go for the 911 in a heartbeat!! But for whatever reason, I like the 996 just a little bit more, don't tell st-anger I said that  shh!!!

It is pretty surprising that only 5 hp difference between 94 and 87. I guess the bosch software is really that great.

robruf
04-06-2005, 10:43 PM
Thought that there would be more of a difference between the two fuels, however if you all put in 87 as opposed to 94 your engine will definately suffer, thanks for the vid

numerouno
04-07-2005, 04:05 AM
The low hp difference seems quite logical IMO, but the engine will run quite smoother with the 94 and that will defo do the engine good in long term use

04-13-2005, 07:13 AM
Looking forward to seeing the result of the fuel comparison. However I'm a bit confused regarding the numbers. Over here we only have 95 and 98. Or do these numbers mean different things?

In an Autobild.de test with modest cars, higher octane didn't allways improve performance. Sometimes performance was even worse. :?

Another thing: I will need the website for a couple of days for some personal stuff (marriage pics, not my own... :D ) and I'll take the opportunity to change the name again. Obviously, I will inform you all on it's new name in this thread.

Hurry to download the vids! I'll leave them for a day or two, and reopen the site in about 10 days. Thanks for understanding.

Fuels in the U.S. are described in terms of their "Pump Octane", which is the average of "RON" (Research Octane Number) and "Motor Octane Number". Labels on gasoline pumps in the U.S. typically describe this as the "(R+M)/2 Method".

Some nations describe fuels according to the traditional "RON" or "MON" ratings, so Octane ratings cannot always be compared with the equivalent U.S. rating by the "(R+M)/2 method".

In most of Europe, petrol is unleaded and available in 95 (Eurosuper) and 98 (Super Plus) octanes; in some countries 91 octane petrol is offered as well. Some stations offer 98 RON with lead substitute. In the UK, leaded 99/100 RON petrol has been reintroduced (legally) on a very limited basis for use by classic car enthusiasts and racers by the independent oil company Bayford Thrust (also the UK licensees of the famous Gulf Oil brand).
AFAIK, lower octane gas has higher BTU so if the engine isn't designed for higher octane, you'll lose power if you use it.

Hope you had fun at the wedding and the parties ;)

lower octane gas has higher BTU so if the engine isn't designed for higher octane, you'll lose power if you use it.

Rather octane also denotes the resistance to ignite as well as the higher energy potential.
When the chamber lights the flame goes along in a line. At to low an octane this flame will jump igniting some of the fuel in front of the line before it reaches it. It does this curtosy of the temperature in the chamber. This is known as preignition and causes things like misfires/ect on the low scale. On the high scale it'll cause not all of your fuel to ignite if you go to far. The reality is all engines work best with the fuel they are tuned for (timing and what not).

Thanks zippo for the old Top Gear MINI Cooper video. Even though it's not one of the Tiff, Jeremy, Vicki era videos, it's still very entertaining. Look at Tony Mason's face when he was driving the MINI on the highway, he must be thinking "I don't want to crash this car at this speed"

Looking back at the pricing of cars more than a decade ago, you can really notice the INFLATION! £1299 for a Mini? You can't even get a working used car for that much these days. I wish I can take my money and spend back in time

The M6 video was pretty good since I love that car, but one comment the guy made was just stupid - "The M6 has the same 507hp as the M5, but the M6 is lighter, and its power to weight ratio is even better" No shit that if its got the same power but weighs less that the power to weight ratio will be better! :?
I didn't expect such a difference between the bike and the 550, although I guess you have to remember one is a street version and the other a full blown racer. :) They both make a beautiful sound though, great video. :D

Thanks for the vids. I still prefer the original German voice over, it just sounds better with this review, and the German voice tells everything with more passion. Though the English version comes in handy since I don't understand everything the German guy said :D

Now that AMS-TV is back at your location, i can tell you that there has just been another high-speed test at Nardo which aired last Sunday here in Germany. It was devided in two parts and therefore a bit longer than the one last year which was only one part :P It was entertaining as always and you guys should like it although i think it was not as good as the ones of the last years cause they didn´t even show the speed listings at the end (they promised to show them in a later show)...

I hope this 93 estate will be a success for saab. They're a brand that dares to follow it's own path and doesn't put profit first.

I like it. My only objections are the chrome strip at the back (why the hell is it there?), and the interior, which is as always with saab too plasticky. My advice is to go for the wood-finished dash.

Always cracks me up when someone mentions leafsprings and sportscars in the same sentence. Must say that the Vette is very good bang for buck, at least in the states. Much pricier where I live. Seriously doubt that it's one of the best sportscars in the world but the Americans are very patriotic.

The narrator in the AMS - Nardo clip talked about Brabus implanting the V12 from the 6-class. Is it my ears that let me down or what?

Thx for the DB9 review, one remark though. WTF did the reviewer said in the beginning of the review: the DB9 keeps the long hood and the lines of the James Bond DB7. I don't remember the DB7 ever being a James Bond car. Or is it just me??

Yea, I was thinking about the exact same thing too. Either he "mixed up" the legendary DB5 with the DB7 or (most likely) he was just delivering the lines.

When I'm watching MotorWeek, I always have the impression that he's reading the commentary out, nobody really talks like that in real life??

Just checked the TV schedule, this week they're showcasing the Pontiac Solstice. Should be interesting.

Just watched and recorded this show called Greatest Ever on the discovery channel. It's an episode on Sports Cars. Jabba actually posted it a while back and like he said, the rankings don't really make sense.

Anyway, I've made clips for the Enzo, McLaren F1 and Aston DB5. Tell me what you think of the quality, I'm switching to 640x480 XviD now.

Been having a bit of problem with my TV tuner lately, the audio seems to get corrupted half of the time :|

A small update, a short clip from the Z06 review on Speed Channel. Just a teaser on what the review is
Speed Channel Test Drive - Corvette Z06 with C6R (clip).avi (http://users.telenet.be/p997s/Speed%20Channel%20Test%20Drive%20-%20Corvette%20Z06%20with%20C6R%20%28clip%29.avi)

Next, Test Drive returns to the States to hook up with 4-time NASCAR Champion Jeff Gordon at Road Atlanta. To get the party started, Tommy Kendall and Johnny O’Connell hit the track in separate Z06’s. Kendall and O’Connell are both experienced racers who hate to give up an inch on the track...and with the Z06 capable of producing a top speed of 198 mph and sticking a 1.04 lateral g-force load, things are bound to get a little testy!

Gordon, one of the biggest stars in American sports, joins the fray to share his impressions on how far Corvette has come, how it compares to the world’s other top sports cars, and how the car is not only easy on the eyes, but performs like no other.

There's problem with the tv signal half way through the programme so I'll have to rerecord it from next week's rerun...
