The SLR. It doesnt deserve to be called by the names SLR and Mclaren.
McLaren, as we all know, are embodied by one thing : the F1. The greatest road car of all time. The ultimate driver's tool. The SLR, is nothing more than a fabulously quick and expensive GT.
The original SLRs were Sporting Lightweight Racers (ok, i dont think SLR stood for that, but this makes sense, i suppose). The new SLR weighs in at 1700 ( ! ) Kgs.
Does anyone else feel that the spirit of both the F1, and the original SLRs, are hopelessly lost with the appearance of the 'Mercedes-McLaren SLR-powered-by-AMG'.....?
Oh, feel free to knock any other misnomered cars.

I hate the automatic thing, not because I hate automatics (tho I do), but because that makes it almost useless in real track driving.
In a McLaren F1, you can make the car do exactly what you want. In a Mclaren SLR, you almost can, but never really.

The turbine-like wheels look nice, yes, and they remind me of those special wheels you can get in Need For Speed Underground (Enkei Shoguns, if i'm not mistaken).
The Interior is a sham, and the brakes, I hear, are numb and completely lacking feel (uses an iteration of Mercedes' EBC - Electronic Brake Control).

Why people buy SLR's given other options is beyond me. Besides the obvious flaws of the car it looks out of proportion as well...
I trust the various drivers of the magazines, after all they are paid to drive cars all year long, they have a lot more experience with these kind of cars.

No, I didn't mention anything about wanting BMW and McLaren to renew acquaintances for a new car, although it would be an absolutely fabulous thing if it could happen.
Rumour has it that BMW will unveil plans for a supercar of their own sometime in either 2005 or 2006 (Think BMW-Williams M_ (insert appropriate number/name here). Audi will have their own V10 supercar, Meercedes will have the SLR and Porsche (whom BMW consider to be their greatest rivals in terms of driving excellence) have the Carrera GT.
To the point at hand : The SLR is mispositioned and misnomered. I have no bias agianst it, just the way it has been executed and how we're all made to believe what it really is like. You make a point when you say that Mercedes make heavy cars, yes, so isnt the name SLR a bit, well, off? If historied names such as SLR, CSL (Not to mention McLaren, M, Ferrari, etc) are simply tacked on the the latest (and usually, heaviest) creations from car manufacturers, then I worry whether they will repsect the tradition and heritage they are supposed to safeguard and honour.
Juergen Hubbert, former Mercedes supremo, said that the SLR would be built with all of Mercedes' philosophies in mind, and no compromise would be accepted 'to incorporate all of Mercedes' traditional luxury'. What was the philosophy behind the original SLR? It clashes, rather jarringly, with the one behind the new one.

As Richard Hammond from Top Gear said it: "I wish it was a bit more McLaren and a bit less Mercedes".

well i am not sure tha mclaren F1 is the greatest road car of all times but for the new slr i aa sure....
it is not a proper supercar...it is automatik....can i say that it is a big sl?????
i agree that the meccanics were a little bit dizzy when they decides for this new slr..
instead of making a track car a gt car they made a long distance cruiser...
but maybe the people will by that car are not interested in buying a track car...because if they want a track car there are many other choises....
and there is where we have another question...if the interior is as bad they say it is what makes that car special?only the engine?

I agree with you i think that Top Gear when tested it say the right thing the SLR have to be "less Mercedes and more McLaren"
