Default Why the SLR doesn't cut it.

This is just something i've decided to pick up from another thread, since it seemed to be straying from the original thread's point.

The SLR. It doesnt deserve to be called by the names SLR and Mclaren.

McLaren, as we all know, are embodied by one thing : the F1. The greatest road car of all time. The ultimate driver's tool. The SLR, is nothing more than a fabulously quick and expensive GT.

The original SLRs were Sporting Lightweight Racers (ok, i dont think SLR stood for that, but this makes sense, i suppose). The new SLR weighs in at 1700 ( ! ) Kgs.

Does anyone else feel that the spirit of both the F1, and the original SLRs, are hopelessly lost with the appearance of the 'Mercedes-McLaren SLR-powered-by-AMG'.....?

Oh, feel free to knock any other misnomered cars.

Uhm - McLaren got paid for their effort - and their effort is visible in the end product. The name is therefore on the product.

Mercedes have not used the SLR name in recent memory - so they put it on their latest technical achievement.

What is the problem again?

Why not send McLaren an email telling them hpw stupid they are.. let's here what they would respond....

To each his own. (=

I happen to like the new 6. I happen to think it agrees with the 'spirit' of the original 6, meaning a big GT coupe, not necessarily a B-road blaster.

I just dont really agree with the SLR, as an execution and a concept. MB, and yes, McLaren, would have you believe its a real driver, but, well, I just dont know.

This isn't an anti Mercedes bias or anything, becos I love the SL55 AMG, and I love the sound the SLR makes. (which, remarkably, sound similiar)

BUt what about its character? shouldnt the name live up to the character? What character does the SLR have, that other big Mercs dont have?

Just my, well 4 cents worth now.

We are not in fifties or sixties (or whatever) anymore they have called it this way because it resemble the old SLR and it was a hommage to it too. Nowadays Mercedes cars aren't light anymore they seduce us with it but the names are not correct but it doesn't matter to me, for example SL means Sport Leicht but the car isn't light at all. They just want to go on with the tradition of the names.

Still I think that the SLR is a great car from Mercedes and a little bit of McLaren.

yep (groot gelijk) your right
I wish It wasn't so

Maybe they'll remake or change the car to whatever the custommer wants and
especially what the public wants it to be, so that It can be remebered as a legend
like It's predecessor

It makes me angry that companies like Brabus & Opera are upgrading the SL at this level... (Brabus 640HP, Opera 718HP)

After seeing these cars, the SLR (626HP) is not that amazing...(of course it is )

But then its not that hard to build a supercar...

Things like that happens everywhere and it even was like that in the fifties sixties etc. Those cars are just customed to their desires wether the SLR is confection => in the good sense of the word

I agree too, but with all the maniacs on the road and dramatic increase of ppl using
cars...not a good combo
