XB-70
It was built during the cold war to out run fighters and carry a nuclear payload since the B-52 was pretty much a sitting duck to fighters. It flew at Mach 3 once, and funding was cut off partially since it was costly and second it had a fatal air collision during a photo shoot. So it never made it to production. It was used by NASA for testing before it was sent to the Air Force musuem in Dayton, Ohio. I've seen it in person and it's gorgeous.

Performance
Maximum speed: 2,056 mph. (Mach 3.1) at 73,000 ft.
Cruising speed: 2,000 mph. (Mach 3.0) at 72,000 ft.
Range: 4,288 miles
Service Ceiling: 77,350 ft.

The Crash of the number 2 XB-70, an F-104 collided with it during the photo shoot. The pilot of the F-104 died obviously in the flamming aircraft you can see, and the one of the two pilots survived the in the XB-70.

thx for the crash pics of the XB-70 ...

Explination to how that crash hapenned .....
The F104 pilot was taking pics and got too close to and got trapt in the gigantic vortex creatd by the large delta wings of XB70 ...... just like the slip streme thing happens in formula one ... the vortex created by the delta wing is very very powerfull and puls everything towards it .. the F104 got sucked into the wing hiting the verticle elevator then slamming on the main wings .. the plane in the begenning kept going strait but then the pilot lost control and it plunged to the ground ....

i saved just abt every pic and vid of tht plane on dfrc

russians made the Mig-25 to counter the XB-70 .. but then one of the giant planes crashed and the project was ended ...the main problem with the project was how to launch the weapons at superconic speeds from bomb bays

Actually the original counterpart was the Sukhoi T-4/S100. It was cancelled though to unknown reasons, other than the canellation of the Valkyrie XB-70. Thats when they came of with the MIG-25 and MIG-31 to intercept them and it was also cheaper. Russian is now working on the "classified" T-60 as a supersonic sonic bomber and you can say that B-1B is what took the place of the XB-70 except the B-1B is a low level bomber. Here's pics of the SU-T4


And this shows the obvious design resemblance since the Russians copied it.

what i actually meant was the Migs were made to Counter the XB-70 as in intercept ... i wouldnt say tht the B-1 took place of the XB-70 .. cuz it sint incapable of the speeds and the altitude thevalkyre was capable of ....

anyways .... Sr-71 was officially grounded three times but its still flying .. the americans made the B-2 .. i guess there are alot of aircrafts tht we cant even imagine being built, but they are flying ... and noone knows about them ... so i guess theres something better then the valkyre flying today
