Apparently i am going to have to wait for the M5 class to find out the reasons for the extensive wear in period as the S85 is not covered in the new engine technology book.

Only reason i can think of is that it's because of the laser etched cylinder walls (used on the S62 and 54 so i am assuming it was used here as well) but that's just speculation.

The S62 is the V8 in the E39 M5 and E52 Z8(see the Engineering Designations thread). And yes that is partially why the last half of my ID is S62. I plan on sticking one of those engines in a Z

Well let's just hope that they never decide to compromise the M5 by releasing a "Touring". Then again, looking at Bentley and Porsche releasing SUVs etc, it wouldn't surprise me these days to seean M5 with a J-Lo derriere

there was an E39 M5 touring. Gerhard Ritcher's company car.
and there's E34 M5 touring, with both 3.6l and 3.8l engines.

i remember driving next to a dealer car this past summer when i was living back home in SF. i couldnt believe what i was seeing! however im not so much a fan of the new 5 styling. the 6 is where its at!!
