I've never driven a deisel but is it as true as clarkson says that the power feels like it's about to come, but then you gotta shift?

The diesel engines I have tried have been pushing real good already at 1500 rpm and up to 4000 rpm and then the redline is at 4500 rpm. For track racing this might feel a bit impractical, but for cruising it's great. You don't have to change down just because you suddenly need some extra power. You don't need an automatic transmission when you can drive in top gear from 50km/h to top speed.
