As sad as it sounds that probably the first tuned deisel i've ever seen, i guess i just never payed attention to deisels but i agree that the power is really good for a 3.0 deisel. I've never driven a deisel but is it as true as clarkson says that the power feels like it's about to come, but then you gotta shift?

You don't need to rev the engine to have all it's power because it doesn't make sens: the max poser output is 4400 RPM and the max torque is at 2200 RPM... With the modern auto box I think it even doesn't worth having a manual box with a Diesel. Any 7spd auto gear box on Diesel?

Diesel should make the most out of a CVT.

thamar,
You didn't get my point. As with a diesel the max pw and trq is at low RPM you don't need to go up to go to 7000rpm to enjoy your engine (any way as far as I know no diesel engine reev up to 7000rp.) Thus when driving a diesel you don't need to reev as much as if you were driving a regular gas engine.
At a time my work car was a Passat 1.9 tdi and my personal car was a Clio Initial
I can tell you that I wasn't driving both cars the same way: I was driving the Passat on the torque at low reev ~2500RPM (excellent on the hightway by the way) and the Clio at higher reev (5000rpm) to find good torque and power.

I remember both Fifth Gear and Top Gear did a head-to-head lap test of Skoda Fabia RS (turbo diesel) vs Mini Cooper (petrol). In both shows the RS won! It's tuned so well, that there is no turbo lag.
Over here, a chip programming company (Freeling Racing) can do a custom chip for a diesl, and the guy says that he has orders. You just sacrifice fuel consumption for horses...

If it's the 535d I think, I know the guy who tunned it and it has a top speed of 300km/h (186mph), on a straight or small inclination.
Pretty impressive, hein?

The more doesn't have to mean the better... It actually could be a worse choice, especially in terms of reliability. Hence I'd stick to the DMS upgrade which seems reasonable.

BTW, why do you say "it's good for a 3.0" when it's a 3.5???
|
It is 3.0 although the badge says 535d. BMW has 530d also, but this one has less turbos.
