3 surguries later... and just over a week now.
good news is he can sleep since his halucinations induced by morphine have stopped, this is due
to only taking it after the last two surgeries. a strep infection took over in the sewed and stapled parts of the tibia muscle, and spread into some of the surrounding skin. needless to say, this was causing a fever, and killing the surrounding tissue.
the question remains, where did the infection come from... ?

after removing 6 square inches, they are going to try a skin, and muscle graft from his calf. we are unsure how many surgeries this is going to take at this point, and he is going to be set to be in bed for the next 3 months or so before phisical therepy can begin.

earlier today, we spoke with the lawyer for the first time, and the beginning of the good news financially for him is the lawyer said he wouldn't have come if he didn't believe it to be a strong case... unfortunately, upon a ruling in my brothers' favor...t he guy gets a 1/3 cut... but that isnt so terrible.

Hopefully all other bike riders reading this topic will now see why some of us ride with the philosophy "I would rather sweat than bleed".

And as such always wear full armoured boots, leather armoured pants and leather armoured jacket and full face helmet and gloves.

Hope he makes a full recovery.

Here you get a lawyer from the insurance company, doesn't cost you anything. Well 15€ a year extra on the insurance, but that's nothing.
You even get a lawyer for traffic violations if you have the extra insurance.

unfortunately, there are some complications that dont make it that easy

Sorry to hear the news nthfinity, I hope your bro makes a speedy recovery and I'm really glad to hear that your family is of the same sort of safety-minded awareness that all too many people aren't. ok, what we hope is the last surgery starts tomarrow evening.

there is no longer any infection, and there have been sponges inserted into the 'open' wound, along with a vacuume pump to remove the fluids (sorry, im not much for biology, so i dont know what its called)

the surgery tomarrow involves removing one half of his right calf muscle, and wraping it around to the shin to replace the damaged, and strep-caused deterioration.

also a 6"^2 skin graft from either his stomach, or arse.... then placing it where the strep infection ate away at and stapling it together.

if all goes as well as this week has, then he should be coming home mid, to late next week.

it is expected that there will be 2-3 months recovery time needed before he can start going back to work.

one final thing, michigan has an interesting law in the no-fault law involving motorcycles... they arent concidered motor vehicles... most insurance companies, as well as lawyers dont know this.

Interesting - does this have positve or negative outcome on the legal process for you guys?

just think of it this way... a motorcycle is actually no different then a bicycle. this is a saving grace in our unique situation. so definately a positive

Sorry to hear about your bro, its unfortunate that retard drivers make the road unsafe for good riders.

My cousin had an accident on his bike too, it has kind of put me off the concept of a motorbike!

Just one question though- what is the idea behind the legal action? I dont know much about this area, I just assumed that accidents, liability, etc was covered under automotive 'road rules'/insurance company policy. What are you aiming to achieve? Just curious, thats all.

Just now saw this thread. Glad to see you're mainly intact Drew. Seeing these pics has made me decide to buy the saftey gear first before i go bike shopping.

Good thing you had yours on. and probably better thing you came to rest in the grass instead of on the pavement. a longer slide on the concrete could have made things much worse

hope the remaining recovery time goes by quickly for you.

It looks pretty nasty, Drew. It's good to hear you're doind fine under the circumstances. Does it still hurt? Does it trouble you while walking?
