As I mentioned... The German Rags believed it hook line and sinker like everybody else... just to find out it was a mid 8 minute car.
The Jaguar XJ220 was a 7:42 production car

I kind of figured they might have used non-production tires but had no way of knowing. Now we know better. tisk tisk Nissan. It's still a fast car, but Motor Hype . . . or rather Motor Trend will have to say something about their not-so-true headline from the December '07 issue.

Alright. . . damn baller.
But seriously though, I think $69k for a sub 8min production car isn't bad. Not a super deal, but definitely not bad either.
But I think I would lean towards the Corvette Z06 for that price though.

Magazine lead time is like 4 months.... news bits a fair bit quicker. I hope you are right.

^^^ yea, I read a lot of car magazines but it's really more to review and enjoy car-related stuff. Jalopnik, Leftlane, and other such blogs are most of what keep me up to date. Inside information never hurts either. Saleen just revealed their new '08 models (with the 302 stroker engines) at a press day at the former El Toro Air Base just the other day. I expect to see that in "February"(?) issues of some of the car magazines.
Car and Driver was much more sensible when approaching the GTR than Motor Trend.

just got back from the LA Auto Show and the GTR hype has really gotten out of hand.
First, some guy was claiming it did 0-60 in 3.4 . . . Nissan claims 3.5. This would be insignificant but it's scary how quickly the fanboys' rose colored glasses go on.
Later, another guy acted as if I were the anti-christ when I mentioned that the GTR's impressive ring time was due in part to using cut slick tires . . . he would not believe a word of it.
I observed other small cases of misinformation that were quite frustrating to hear.
My feelings on this car have gone from
meh
to oooh interesting indeed
to, something's fishy
to ah, the tires, figures
and now to contempt. People stand around and bash the Mustang's live rear axle and Corvette's leaf springs contrasting it to the "miracle working" GTR suspension, never once stopping to consider that suspension geometry alone cannot make up for 3800 pounds of car with less horse power and torque outrunning a Z06 on the ring. AWD helps for sure, but . . . yea you all know, tires. Blah, I don't like to think I'm oh-so informed on cars, but the average person's misconceptions bother me to no end.

...yes those people do exist. And I met one at the LA Auto Show myself.
And I shut them up when I said the GT-R was ugly.

I did't believe the GTR times . . . period. With all the electronics and all, it doesn't make up for the weight of the car and the fact that it's damn near 4,000lbs. Cut tires make sense, which doesn't really help place the car into comparison with any other manufactured car that ran in "sale" spec with regular street tires. If the GTR is going to be released with cut tires, then fine. But I HIGHLY doubt it.
I heard that the Japanese manufacturers were caught by Best MOTORing back in the days when the show first came out. Back then, the manufacturers would "loan" cars to the show for testing. Then the show started seeing "weird" stuff and in one episode, the compared the "loaner" car from the manufacturer with one they bought off a lot. The loaner car was lowered, had different tires, etc. to make it perform better on the show. Now, Best MOTORing buy all their test cars and sell them afterwards with a plate that says it was used on the show...I guess people will pay a little extra for it.
I don't mind seeing comparisons, but compare apples to apples and don't say your car is just as fast or faster than X, if it's tricked. It's like saying your Honda CRX is faster in a 1/4 mile drag than a Viper, when the Viper is stock, but your CRX is pumping 23psi via the turbocharger, has huge Hoosier drag slicks, is a tube-framed car with a fiberglass shell, and is running alcohol and NOS too. I'm not trying to hate, but if you're going to release quotes and numbers...be upfront.

Notice at between 1:00 and 1:08 where the lap begins being timed... and where the lap stop's being timed. This is the 26,600 m NS lap time, and is not used by the major manufacturers when claiming a lap time.... not GM, BMW, Audi, Porsche, and supposedly not Sport Auto either.
The distance which is the true lap is 26,823 Meters, about 4-6 seconds longer then what is measured.
The lap is totally BALLS OUT.... but the timing is uncomparable to the 911 Turbo's 7:40, the C6 Z06's 7:43, the GT2's 7:32, etc. etc.

Long time guys!
I have been doing "research" , and like someone said earlier...sport auto doesnt not make the full 20.8 km run due to safety precaustions. The GTR ran the same distance as all the other cars.
Plus there is NO clarrification on the tires yet. I have seen other articles that state it was a language miscommunication and that the the engineer said "it could have done low 7:30's, but would have required "cut-slicks".....either way its still fast.
Also Nth.....there is no conclusive evidence on the 997 Turbo's 7:40 lap (the only thing i have found is a Motor trend estimate). No one knows what it was run on. The only thing that we know is sport auto ran a 7:54 in the Turbo on MPSC's.......there is also another times showing Walter running a 7:49 on MPSC's. .......MPSC's are not an option on the 997 Turbo

http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?vie...ID=0&tID=10073
So, we will have to wait for sport auto to get a real test number.
Top Gear also has the GTR against the Scuderia in the Jan issue !

Sport Auto did the test of the new GTR on NS; and it was posted in the magazine scan section, and it ran a 7:50 around NS, which is what other quotes from Nissan engineers have said they expected it to do. In the video, you can clearly see an odd tread pattern that was in the tire used. Furthermore, they called the track wet. In the video, its easy to see that the only thing that could've been wet was the condensate on the grass beside the track.
Nissan have always been full of it when it comes to NS and the GTR's track time... remember they claimed the R34 could lap in 7:59... SA got it, and could only manage a mid 8 Minute lap at best.
As to the Porkers not being as fast.... The Germans have a reputation to keep

That just sounds like an unfair fight.
Anyways. Is it true that the GT-R automatically limits its own speed in Japan by recognizing what road it's on? Maybe we can twinker with the systems and limit all of their cars to 30mph.

The article in sport auto was not a full review, nor was it the "supertest". It was a pre-review. Nissan simply let them drive the car, and in the time they had it, it managed around a 7:50 (it was also pre-production).....so really we cant go by that article as a set time.
And anyway, If it does do 7:50, that is still good for sport auto. The fastest sport auto achieved on the 997 Turbo was a 7:54 on MPSC's and there is a logged run of Walter running 7:49 on MPSC's.....so 7:50 would be right there with the Turbo.
We will see in due time.
P.S. I'm sad - what happen to the site guys???......I know I've missed alot of info here recently...the old site was so easy on the eyes.
