He probably lost his nerve midway down the hill and lifted.

Bad Move.
A close friend of mine used to race motorcycles with WERA, he's told me a bunch of his tales, and one is at Rd. Atl. He was coming under the bridge, in the lead BTW, and some guy tries to come under him as they were cresting the hill under the bridge, my buddy was dragging his knee, and the guy comes in too hot underneath him, and ends up running over his knee, and hitting his bike. So my friend straightens up some and ends up heading down the outside pit lane entrance. He gets his foot back on the peg and takes off across the grass back onto the track and pulls back on in 3rd or 4th. Next lap around they black flag him for coming back on after that, so he pulls into the pits next time around. In WERA you have to come to complete stop by the official at pit out, and then he'll tell you to go on. So he comes screaming down pit lane and almost stands it on it's nose to stop. By the time he gets stopped the rest of the field has come around and the pit out guy wouldn't let him go back on until they were clear.
Just to give you a good picture of the position he was in, he was currently leading the championship points at about midpoint in the season, and here he was in the pits because the other guy made a stupid attempt at a pass, knocked him off track, and he got black flagged for it. He's sitting there watching most of the field, typically 40-50 riders in his class, stream by. So he finally gets to go, and starts screaming back through the field to finish in I think 4th or 5th.
Anyway that ended up being alot longer than I thought just to tell another tale about that turn. If you're interested he got knocked off his back going about 135 at Indy, (with three races left in the season while still leading the championship points), flipped, rolled and bounced off a wall, broke his leg in a few places, and still ended up 3rd for the season. Too bad, if he could've finished 5th or better in the last race, with a couple other conditions, he could have had the championship anyway. The only thing that kept him from it was that he had to be able to roll his own bike through tech, and he just couldn't enough pressure on his leg to do it. He could still ride, just not walk yet.
Sorry for the long post.
