Today marked the start of the final group test of the year with emphasis firmly placed on the 2008 season.
There were a number of ‘firsts’ today with Ross Brawn on duty with Honda in his new role of Team Principal, Bridgestone providing slick tyres for evaluation, Javier Villa and Marko Asmer testing with BMW Sauber, Timo Glock adapting to his new Toyota seat, Nico Hulkenberg getting his first taste of F1 courtesy of Williams, while Franck Montagny and Giancarlo Fisichella tested with Force India for the first time.
As Bridgestone look toward a possible re-introduction of slick tyres as soon as 2009, Nick Heidfeld and Jenson Button tested the evaluation rubber and quickly illustrated the gains that can be found with the unloved grooves removed.
Heidfeld led the way in his slick-shod BMW Sauber with a best lap of 1:19.042s, a tenth clear of Button in his similarly equipped Honda. Pedro de la Rosa was third fastest for McLaren Mercedes with fellow test driver Gary Paffett seventh best.
Kimi Raikkonen was back in action for the first time since winning the championship in Brazil, clocking the fourth fastest time and splitting his time between two Ferrari F2007 chassis' on hand.
Nelson Piquet, expected to be racing in Formula One next season with Renault, recorded the fifth fastest time ahead of Sebastien Bourdais who continues to adapt to F1 machinery at Toro Rosso Ferrari.
Mark Webber and Marc Gene rounded out the top ten for Red Bull Renault and Ferrari respectively ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the second Toro Rosso.
Honda and Super Aguri Honda continue their test driver shuffle in Spain this week with James Rossiter 12th for the latter ahead of Glock making his Toyota test debut.
Despite an off in the morning, Giancarlo Fisichella managed the 14th best time in his first test with Force India Ferrari ahead of Hulkenberg making his test debut with Williams.
Franck Montagny set the 16th best time in his Force India entry ahead of Kazuki Nakajima in his Williams. BMW Sauber tested Asmer and Villa with the 2008 test-hopefuls setting the 18th and 20th best times respectively with Kamui Kobayashi in between in his new role as Toyota tester.
Testing continues on Wednesday.

For Ferrari, Kimi will be testing on December 4 and 5 while Schumi will take his place on the 6th and 7th. I would have loved to compare their track times
