BMW 320d - Engine Failure!

Well,

Everything was going well with our 320d, but last week, the engine started going lumpy and strange.

We stopped the car and took it to the BMW dealer. They phoned today and it seems that a butterfly from the intake system broke and went INTO the engine!! :shock:

Solution.... New Engine!! :shock:

The car has around 75000kms and it's the 150hp, 6 speed version.
The warranty has ended last year or so...

Anyone knows about this failure??

It is very strange... anyone knows if there wasn't any kind of recall to change this part?

We don't even get that diesel option here in the states.. but man does that suck.

No way you can get BMW to pay for it?

well...

you could go to an independant mechanic, and maybe if your lucky, you only need to replace a piston and set of valves for that piston... still have to open her up, but wayyy cheaper then a new engine.

Well, they proposed to replace the engine with no cost in the engine.
We "only" pay the... how do you say... handwork???


For now they borrowed us a 120d has a replacement... not bad, let's see how much will be the budget for the "handwork".

I'm suprised they will give you the engine for free if the car is out of waranty.

Well... I think it's clear that the engine had some kind of build problem. The intake butterfly is not a part that is "normal" to break... and we always serviced the car in the BMW dealer...

it's actually a pretty common tactic for BMW to take. Being an independent make, they have a lot more leeway in what they can allow their dealers to do.

Over here it's called Goodwill Warranty, but in our instances, the dealer usually ends up eating both parts AND labor. It tends to piss off the techs doing the work because we're essentially doing it for a cut rate, but it's better than just taking out diagnosis time and losing the work entirely.

In your case, the service adviser probably talked to the manager and told them what your situation was and the service manager agreed to goodwill the engine as long as you agreed to pay the labor, which is a good deal since labor is probably around 30 hours to replace the engine. That saves you the cost of the engine which is probably about 20K USD.

We don't have the diesels over here as was mentioned previously so i am not aware of any problems surrounding them.

I do know BMW's tend to have a conssiderably high number of engine failures, so it should be normal for BMW to want to replace the engine with as little fuss as possible. They don't want any more bad publicity then is necessary...

Now that is bad indeed, can't you get a 2nd opinion? Maybe from a non official BMW dealer?

The M3 engine failures was a fluke.

In the 3 years i've been working for them i've seen 2 engines changed under warranty. 6 because the morons thought their cars could swim.

depends on what happened. did the over rev damage a piston?

We've got a 325Ci in the shop right now because the dumbfuck tried to be cool and down shift from 5th at high speed. Missed 4th and went into 2nd. The over rev floated the valves and 4 of them kissed pistons. Piston crowns are ok, but the head had to be sent out.

So unless a piston got badly damaged, i wouldn't think that it's necessary to replace the whole motor.
