Max wants `green` V6 engines
Friday 18th May 2007
Fantasy F1 - Win a trip to Monaco!

It's not too late, point scoring starts at the Bahrain GP. Click here.

Max Mosley is once again talking about a "green revolution" for F1 and has targeted 2011 as the date by which he wants his changes implemented.

The FIA President has often spoken over the past few years about making F1 more environmentally friendly, however, his comments have met by jeers as people question how it could ever happen.

Mosley, though, now has a plan.

Under his proposal F1 teams will switch to eco-friendly 2.2-litre turbocharged V6 engines that would run on biofuel. However, the engines would develop roughly 770 horsepower, around 100 less than the present 2.4-litre V8 engines.

Maximum revs would also be cut by approximately 9,000rpm, which would mean the cars would also create less noise polution.

Mosley also proposes that the engines be made to last for five grand prix weekends and that the cars would be fitted with traction control, four-wheel drive and have a power-boost facility.

The latter, which is used in the A1GP series, would be deployed by drivers in order to allow for easier overtaking.

"We are in active discussions with the major manufacturers to ensure that, in future, research and development relevant only to Formula One will be discouraged, whereas that which has relevance to road-car development will be encouraged," Mosley told F1-Racing magazine.

"We understand that such an approach has broad support from the competing manufacturers and we will work closely with them to ensure that, in particular, the new environmentally relevant technologies that many of them are developing are made our priority.

"Whilst aiming to achieve these goals we will ensure that the sporting spectacle of F1 remains the same or is even improved by the new developments."

According to the magazine, Mosley has already submitted his plans to F1's car manufacturers, although McLaren-Mercedes has yet to give it any thought.

"McLaren's view is not yet fully formed," said McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh. "I think you would have to say that, on the face of it, these are very laudable propositions.

"However, I think we have been going through a period of much change in Formula One, what with sealed engines in 2007, new electronic systems in 2008, energy recovery systems in 2009 and then more sweeping changes from 2011.

"Change is always very expensive in Formula One. We understand that the sport must evolve, but we are concerned about cost."
Someone PLEASE get rid of him. For the sake of F1...

They're gonna be calling it F0.5 in a while...

Please don't let it be true, something has to be done

I think the switching to biofuel part is a great idea. But if you gonna do that let them run the v8 or whatever they want. If they cant figure out how to run the same hp on biofuel with their ridiculous budgets then they can go solar powered.

This is why I don't follow Euro open wheeled racing and haven't for almost 10 years.

It is a joke at best.

Wow - so the A1GP is for pussies and losers then?

They use nitrous for over taking.. like in video games.. ROFL... what a crock of shit

If they go ahead with this, I'm not going to watch F1. As simple as that.

Max's idea of F-1 in the future:

Prius's for all teams, they'll be trying to engineer the best electric motors

I think people go to such events because of the noise.

Max Mosley is the son of the former leader/founder of the British Union of Fascists, which was essentially a Mussolini fan club for many British aristocrats. His ideals are about as laughable as his father's were.

Yeah I think Max's list eliminates most of the major reasons why F1 fans attend and watch races. Great battle plan.

I think I saw this car on the freeway the other day. I can't imagine that there would be more than one Metallic green/gold Prius out there....God help us all if there is.

This is a stupid ass plan. No one wants to go to a race to see slow, quiet, eco cars...they want to see racing!

There's always the A1, which might overtake the F1 if proposals like this are pushed forwards...

yes part of the fun and rush is the noise, actually thats most of it, its not like u can watch a good race from in person when u can only see a corner or 2, its the cars flying by so fastand making all the different sounds they make soo loud thats the main rush i think, for most people.

Get rid of this green shit the cars will probably be wayyy quieter and not even sound good, part of what makes racing (and cars) soo awesome is the sound and this will elimanate that element.

turbos back in F1? no way

9000 rpm are u fuckin kidding me this is fuckin Formula 1 not some fuckin ameteur F3000 league.

stupid fucks running F1
