There was an article somewhere that I read stating that Porsche does expect a downturn in car sales until at least 2009 when the new Panamera comes out.

Porsche are one of the most successful, profitable car manufacturers in the World, like they should worry.

it's probably due to the hight fuel prices and people's new found awareness of fuel consummation and emission levels but then again these are spots cars and no one buys a prius for it's sporty drive, anyhoo fuck porsche they are doing fine. there are much more important things to be worried about and lots of people in need in the world (like me! in need of a new 911 )

p.s
i have no respect for the Boxsters and Caymans the 911 is the only true porsche

This was posted on pistonheads just a few days ago, not telling quite the same story as we are hearing?

Porsche's announced its annual figures, revealing results that most carmakers would give their right arms for.

Pre-tax profits are up to €2.11 billion from €1.238 billion, and after taxes and after taxes it's still €1.393 billion, almost doubling the previous year's income. And the company's still got almost €2 billion cash in the bank, despite buying almost 30 per cent of VW.

Porsche sold a record-breaking 96,794 cars, up nearly ten per cent on the previous year in a period when most carmakers are struggling to maintain parity. Stuttgart puts the increase down to the new 911 and the Cayman, which has been very well-received, according to Porsche. Interestingly, Porsche still sold more 911s than Boxsters and Caymans, although sales figures for the three model ranges were all close, clustered around 35,000 in the model year 2005/6.

For the future, Porsche said that: "Even Porsche faces restrictions ... in the world today. However, Porsche will not in any way deviate from the Company's clearly profit-oriented – and not volume-oriented – business policy. Up to the launch of the Porsche Panamera, Porsche will focus on the consolidation of business on a high level. The company then expects the next major thrust in growth as of 2009 when the new four-door Sports Coupé enters the market."

The only question is what else Porsche might have planned for all that cash. Some have postulated that Porsche, now a major VW shareholder, might spin off Audi -- and maybe even Bentley and Lamborghini -- from VW and set up a separate group, much like Ford's PAG.

What a decision to have to make! Ford and General Motors, eat your hearts out...

That includes profit from VW:

have peaked. The company warned that sales growth would slow in the next few
years, amid struggles in the fiercely competitive American market and a lack of
new models.

Porsche said its sales would not spike again until 2009, when it will roll out
the Panamera, a four-door sports coupe that will be its first new model since
the Cayenne sport utility vehicle in 2002.

But the Cayenne is also sputtering. Unit sales fell 29.2 percent in the first
four months of the new financial year, reflecting both its age and the reduced
appetite for SUVs in the United States.

Thanks for the link, interesting reading, one sentence gives us confidence that Porsche will be building cars like the 911 for many years to come:

"Porsche has the confidence that comes from being the world's most profitable major carmaker"

Actually if anything it is a Cash Cows like the Cayenne, Boxster, Cayman that helps Porsche keep on moving.

We have bought enough! Its your turn now. C'mon Finland take it for the team

I hope people are coming to their senses - new Porsches are perhaps the best way to lose a lot of money. A 4 year old Porsche 996 will cost $40,000 lesser than a new car and will be 99% as much fun as a new 997.

Same story for the new Ferrari V12s.

Historically 911s have held their values well. Take a look at the 964s and the 993s.

I think the 996 might be an aberation because the direction it took away from the traditional 911 design a la headlights. Also, it was plagued with the knowledge that it was poorly built (quality wise), don't know if that it really true or not.

It only made it worst when the 997 came out and went back to the traditional styling.
