a thread peeled of my tire *pics*

hey,
it was raining and i went out for a spin, u know having some fun and i hear a flap flap flap, i pull over, look at my tire and see this:





i cut that piece off because it was hitting my car every time the tire turned, so i put my spare and im taking the tire to the dealership tomorrow to see if they can give me another one, i have only had them for 8800 miles.... ive never heard of this happeneing to any car before... anyone can help or tell me if its normal or a defec tin the tire?
