Buy and install NAVI in a B5 S4 (experts wanted)
I'm thinking of buying a B5 S4 Avant, but I really want navi in this one too.
How much does a NAVI unit (RNS-D or RNS-E) cost?
Is the car ready to install it with wires? Do these have an external dvd player to hold the navi disc? (like a8) How much do you think a dealer will take to install it all with antenna?
the reason I'm asking is that the prices in Norway are often vary very much if it has navi or not.

First, good choice in car. Pretty much exactly what I want for my next car.
Navigation systems are usually expensive, especially if you want a clean custom installation. You'd be better off with one of those plug and play type units that can be updated by connecting them to your PC. Imagine a radar detector along with associated wires hanging off of your dashboard. Thats what they look like.
If I had to guess, buyin and installing a good quality Nav system would run around 2500 USD.
Also, if the car does not come with the nav system, I'd doubt the wires would be there for it. Though, i wouldn't be surprised if all it took was a different harness to be plugged in that shoul come with the nav system.
Do you have a nearby shop that installs stereos? Around me, all the big retail electronics stores will install nav systems. Plus, there are a few shops the specialize in installing stereos and nav systems. If you do, call and ask for a quote, if it's too much, try and haggle. I bet they would be willing to charge less to get your business.

well, you're looking at an easy 1200-1300 usd for the navigation computer itself, another 15-1800 for the screen (if it doesnt' already have one) and probably 300 for installation. Prices vary on discs.
it would be cheaper for you to get one without navigation, buy a windshield mounted gps nav unit and have the dealer or an independant shop hide the wires for you. Or just forgo all that and buy the car with nav already installed.

well, the reason I want a Audi unit in the dash is mostly because of the many excellent features I've gotten used to in the A8. The TMC which guides you around accidents and cues on the road is wonderful when driving in europe, especially on the autobahn, second, it looks very nice, and third it costs around $6000 when new.
