Default E55 with SLR engine (SLK owner)

And speaking of Mercedes SLRs, Emirati rally driver Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who shoehorned a Merc-McLaren SLR engine into an SLK55, has been at it once again. This time, he — and his unconscionably talented staff of mechanics — swapped the already potent AMG mill from an E55 with an SLR powerplant (are they selling crate motors now?). According to a tipster, the transmission was modified to take 922 ft-lbs of torque, the limited-slip diff was reworked and the SLR’s stock intercooler system was modified. What’s the upshot? If it performs half as well as his SLK, Sulayem’s E-SLR will be a major desert beastie. [Thanks again to Khaled for the tip.]

The SLR uses the same basic block that goes in all the 55 cars (SL55, SLK55, S55 etc) but the internals are completely different along with the supercharger.

So basicaly any savvy MB tuner could build an SLR engine with the 5.4 block, 32 valve heads and the blower.

Do we have any MB contacts on JW that can provide us the part number and cost of an SLR crate motor?

You're looking at a bit of money to get the SLR parts, and I dont think they would be mass produced either for people to do such a project. If you could get them - it would be at a handy premium.

Actually, you have a far better chance of buying the rotating assembly and heads for a limited produciton engine than you do for the crate motor.

The manufacturer is obligated to have and make spare parts available - but I would like to hear from a MB insider about this one.

What are the chance of them selling the parts to you if you are a regular joe blow?

I can imagine Mercedes/Mclaren keeping some kind of tight net over where their parts go for something this exclusive - I could be wrong

hmm, i thought the SLR's head was "RED" in colour? The one in the pic seems black... Having second thoughts on its source, maybe just a change in the head cover, just IMO....

Idd, some new heads and a chip.....

If he went through all this trouble, why not have the ultimate and go for a Brabus E V12?????

Chance? 100% - money is money - and the parts are spares...now what can sometimes happen is that "rare or bespoke" car spares sometimes are limited to sale to exisiting owners - as in spares are assigned to VIN numbers... but if for example the internals are outsourced, chances are they are now regular part numbers from the outsourcer...

The water cooler tanks on top of the engine are black, but it's the air intake piece on the front of the engine which is red. In this case, just removed in both the E and SLK since it's really big.

Besides, every company is in it for the money anyway

That guy must have so much fun :x He can do whatever he wants with that never ending money! I once saw i vid about his garages, just insane! The power of a CLK-GTR wasn´t enough for him so AMG had to build a special stronger engine for him! That explains why he wants the SLR engines in the SLK and E-Class! He must be mad!
