Default Nurburgring 08-04-06 HOT VLN-ACTION !

Hi peeps,

It was VLN-time last Saterday at the Nurburgring, finally !!! The first official planned race was canceled due too dangerous winter conditions on and around the Eifel track. But last Saterday it was GAME ON 8) I went to the ring with a fellow photographer www.svenmichiels.be
Until now, I can only post a small number of pictures 'cause I have been shooting in NEF-files (Nikon Electronic File) instead of jpeg. A NEF-file is Nikon's version of RAW. The quality is much much better; The colors are more vivid and much more detail as well. Improving these raws in photoshop is a whole different thing compared to jpegs.

Anyway, I still hope you like these images. I shot slighty different pictures than last year. I didn't try to shoot the cars that thight anymore. So, up to you to judge these 8)

I have posted two high-resolution images as well, to satisfy the high-res freaks among us

And now the high-res pics

Some people say the D70 is no-good when it comes to sports photography

Hope you enjoy these.

Cheers

Thanks for positive feedback !!! Appreciate it a lot.

The black H&R Porsches are from Uwe Alzen Motorsport. The nr 122 porsche had some suspension probs during the warm-up & qualification. The right shock absorber broke in two, I had a nice chat with one the mechanics of the team.
I asked him whether they had bought the cars at the Porsche factory, that was a no-no. These cars are self-made  It is a combination of the new GT3 and self-made or self-adjusted genuine porsche parts.
The cock-pit is hardcore something I had never seen. It has a special designed racing seat ... not a stock one 8)

If you look at the performance and the lap times nowadays and the way these cars are driven ... well it is impressive. The main problem they suffer these days is that there are no decent tyres available at the market today to go even faster.
Last year, Uwe Alzen Motorsport drove a 600 BHP all-wheel drive Turbo Porsche. They had to shut the project down because it became too dangerous, there are no tyres available which can handle this much power. It may sound strange, but these cars make incredible jumps at the Ring by tremendous high speeds

Cheers

I have no idea mate. It didn't (doesn't) look like it collided with another car nor crashed into the armco.

Might have been a broken oil or petrol tube ... who knows. But there was a re-start after this incident.

Cheers

Great pictures.. What kind of lens were you using?

I recently bought a D50 and have been using jpeg fine quality 95% of the time.. I know RAW is the way to go but it just eats up so much space and a lot slower to work with on the computer.

But after hearing you talk about it and looking at these pics, I think I'll have to pick up another 1gb SD card and start shooting RAW all the time..

Hi Dutchmasterflex,

Congrats on your new camera, it's a good camera. Hope you will have lots of fun with it.

I'm using the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lens ... one of the best glassworks ever produced. It's not that cheap thou, but worth every euro or dollar

These posted images are all original jpegs, I haven't posted a NEF-file (RAW) yet. I do have some quite good ones.

I only have one SD-card, I'm using the Sandisk 2gig ultra. I can shoot close to 350 RAWs with it, as far as I'm concerned more then enough thus far. When I'm covering a race like this, I don't use my camera as a machine gun as you know what I mean. I make a few test shots check the shots and see whether I can improve something (eg: the angle). Shots I don't like get deleted almost immediately.

Cheers

Superb panning shots! I've been experimenting with those NEF-files as well. But most of the time I'm still using the jpegs: that way I can take more pics, and they are faster to edit.
