Default Mercedes-Benz A-200 Turbo

The new Mercedes-Benz A 200 TURBO is the most powerful model in the compact A-Class, and rounds the model range off at the top end. With an output of 142 kW/193 hp, its new, up-to-date lightweight power unit with turbocharging and sodium-cooled exhaust valves is among the most powerful in its displacement class, and generates a maximum torque of 280 Newton metres which remains constant from just 1800 rpm. Accordingly the four-cylinder petrol unit guarantees outstanding performance characteristics. The A 200 TURBO takes just 7.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h from standstill and achieves a maximum speed of 228 km/h, yet its fuel consumption remains comparatively modest at 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres.

Like all the models in the A-Class, the new A 200 TURBO is available in a versatile five-door or three-door coupé version with a particularly sporty and youthful appearance. Buyers of either variant of the A 200 TURBO have a choice between the design and equipment lines Avantgarde and Elegance at no extra cost. Other standard appointments in the new top model include 16-inch light-alloy wheels, the newly developed, sporty six-speed transmission, air conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel, speed-dependent power steering and ESP®. A twin exhaust tailpipe is an unmistakable and eye-catching visual feature.
Safe yet dynamic handling combined with a high level of ride comfort are outstanding characteristics on the road. These are in large measure due to the new spherical parabolic rear axle of the A-Class, which provides precise wheel location and excellent roll resistance on bends, and the likewise new selective damping system which adapts the shock absorber configuration to the current driving situation. Large, ventilated brake discs with a diameter of 288 millimetres ensure that the A 200 TURBO has a braking performance in keeping with its high output.

Thanks to the unique sandwich concept, the A 200 TURBO has the same advantages as the other models in the A-Class. In addition to a high level of safety, which has been confirmed by the award of the maximum five stars in the Euro-NCAP rating, these include exemplary use of space and superb variability. This enables the interior space available for luggage or recreational/sports equipment to be increased to up to 2.75 metres in length and up to 1995 litres in capacity.

The new A 200 TURBO costs 24,582 euro ex factory as a three-door Coupé and 25,462 Euro as a five-door model.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz offers an attractive sports package for all A-Class models which includes 17-inch light-alloy wheels, a perforated, matt silver radiator grille, sports pedals with rubber studs, a sports shift lever, a sports steering wheel covered with perforated leather and an instrument cluster on a silver background.

This costs only 690.20 euro for buyers of an A 200 TURBO or Avantgarde model. In conjunction with the Elegance line the sports package costs 690.20 euro with the standard 16-inch tyres and 968.60 euro with 15-inch tyres. Classic models can also be equipped with the sports package – the A 200 for 1,142.60 euro and all other engine versions for 1,432.60 euro.

Is this the first turbocharged MB? To me it looks like all the other A-classes. They could have done more with the exterior.

I love that it has max torque already from 1800 rpm. That reduces the need to change gear a lot, and 280 Nm is pretty good. Still I wonder about this one: "...among the most powerful in its displacement class..." What does that mean? It's no match for the rally inspired cars. I know it's close to most hot hatches, but still...

First turbocharged MB? The SL600 and 65 are both turbocharged. Smart cars have been turbocharged for some time, and the new SLK has a triturbo version coming out.

OK, my bad with the SL600 and SL65. I knew about the Smarts, but Smart is Smart, even though they are MB owned and built.

Still I wonder: MB have been holding on to the supercharger for quite some time, almost alone in the european market. Why are they starting to use turbochargers? Anyone want to guess?

Well i would think it would be cheaper...so better on a "cheap" car like the a-class.

A lone supercharger is great, but typically does not produce as much power as two turbo's, so that's probably why they use biturbo in their 600/65 cars.

i think you're right on about the displacement class crap though Gnome...most street rally cars produce at least 300 hp from 2 litre turbo...the MR FQ-400 Evo had 400...so...marketing, marketing, marketing

Superchargers and Turbo's all have their advantages. A supercharger can engage earlier and provide smoother power distribution, whilst a turbo can provide more power at a later time (often giving that 'kick in the a$$' feeling) without sucking power from the engine in order to engage (the supercharger is run by the engine, whilst the turbo runs from exhaust pressure).

Different forms of function, each of which can be useful in their own place. I think the reason why MB went with Turbo for their '65' and recent '600' engines (CL, S and SL all come with the bi-turbo 6 liter engine) was due to the 'cool' image that most people associate with turbos. Had they wanted to, they could have built enough boost while running the superchargers, but a turbo was a simple way to make things work (nevermind the fact that a supercharger would have ended up causing gas consumption in these monsters to rise higher then with the turbo's I believe).

But as it seems, MB is probably moving away from SC's and Turbo's to consentrate on NA engines once again...
