mmmm since i'm in california i might not be able to help, but as far as i know you could get an international driver license from AAA. here in california to get a US or State driver license you have to have your social number, they used to give it to you with only your passport. my best be is to go to www.dmv.org

International license will let you drive in the US, but getting a car and driving it under the International license is going to cost you A LOT. Insurance will be expensive as they cant award you points on the international license. I could have gotten one easy in my country (paying for it lol), but I found about this which made it useless to get. So I opted to get a local Florida one and now my insurance is not as expensive as it would have been otherwise.

Try getting an american license as fast as you can... within2 to 3 years of a clean record, you will get your insurance lower.

Oscar, you might find you have to be 18 to drive in TX regardless of where else in the world you have already passed a test for your international license.

But, as everyone says, it will be much easier/cheaper to get insurance with a TX license. The driving test is so easy you can do it with your eyes closed

Over here you can't get an international licence until you reach 21 years old I think. And I don't think you will be able to rent a car if you get an international licence at the age of 18 because most rental companies got a policy of over 24 years old or somewhere in that range but surely not before 20.

Yeah you can do that, be sure though to talk about the insurance thingy. Tell them you will get a texas license and that if thatt will make your premium go lower.

-TransAm2001 = Im sorry but i think you are wrong...you can get your licence on your 16th birthday. if at your 15th birthday you get a permit which takes 6 months to transfors into a permit that lets you drive by yourself but only with one friend from something like 6am to 12pm, after 6 months with that permit you can get the nomral licence...right? oh and i cant take the test until after i have taken the driving classes, which i dont have a certificate for and dont want to do that SEARS's class.
-Evo= It doesnt say anything about the age in the webpage or the papers (which i got today)... u made me curious... ill try it anyways if it doesnt work will i didnt loose anything... and im not worried about renting a car, i just want a licecnce so my parents will b ok with me driving here.
-Demon- i will thanks, but still my insurance is going to b super high cause since ive only been here a year they "dont know naything about me" so they dont "trust us" since they dont have any record, thats what they did to my dad, mom, and bro, we have super high insurance! on all cars specially my ubrothers mustang.
but thanks for the help i hope it all works out good with the insurance.

I know how it is Oscar, im from Bolivia and I got my license a year ago. I bought my first G 7 month ago and my insurance would have been 320$ per month (with 1000$ deductible). Fortunatelly, Infiniti called a better insurance company (I couldnt register with a good insurance company, and you probably wont be able either, because I had no previous insurance records) which made me pay 280 a month. I payed the 6 month thingy at once and got deducted 200$ off total price. Try doing something like that. Also try calling esurance esurance.com Im on progressive right now, but esurance gives me better quote so I'll probably be moving to that soon.

Oscar, you might be right actually. I do remember something about people in TX being able to get their licenses a bit younger under certain circumstances; I think if you have no family/parents and you live in the country you can drive on Farm roads at 15 or something like that.

While I said it is 18 years old orginally I take that back - I was getting confused with the England/France situation (you can drive at 17 in UK but not in France even if you have a UK license you must be 18 to drive in France)

Oscar, you can download the Texas drivers handbook from the internet which will tell you all this...

Of course, being from the UK I have had the same 'problems' as you guys in respect of insurance etc. I am currently with Unitrin Direct via insurance.com and pay $920 a year full coverage.

When I first got here I had to really really shop around for insurance. I got some stupid quotes from people like Progressive ($2000 a year for a Prelude). I ended up going via PLI with a company called Chubb Insurance on the Z3 and that was $1244 a year.

After 2 years in the USA I have no credit history and I get penalised for this because, as you say, they don't 'know' me. It really pisses me off as the reason I have no credit history is I don't need or want credit. The only time I have needed to borrow in 2 years was when I first got here and I used my UK credit card for part payment of my Z3.

Americans don't seem to understand the concept of saving up for stuff rather than borrowing (no offence to anyone, but I am sure the non-US citizens lving here have also noticed this). I earn enough and live within my means so as not need to borrow money yet I get penalised for this. IT FUCKS ME OFF!

rant over!
