Oooo...that's got to be expensive...

Hopefully they are resolving some of their quality issues, because they aren't doing themselves any favors with the current reliability.

I'd read about the brake recall, but 1.3m cars... that's gonna take a while to shift

Maybe it will teach them to make their cars a bit better in future. Our family and friends have had poor experiences with (not cheap) new mercs recently

They are. MB started spending a lot of money in late '04 and will continue to do so throughout '05 to improve the build quality & reliability of its cars. There will also be fewer electronics in future MB's, electronics being responsible for many of the problems Mercs have had.

 we're talking about millions ofeuros/dollars replacing and upgrading those mercs

it's been always fairly simple, you save 10 cents on an alternator, battery, electronics, ok, you save one, maybe two million $, but then you have to recall after the woes come out and loose 10 times what you saved

Yes, but Porsche commands a huge premium for its cars compared to what Merc can charge. Much more competition in the lower segments.

Wow, talk about expensive. Hopefully this will be the low-point for the company.

Concerning the alternators and batteries, I think in a MB it's especially important to have that reliable electrical supply as so much of the car is operated by electrical motors (as are most luxury cars).

Damn, some of you guys act like girls, just waiting to see MB fail or struggle, so what, it can happen to any carmaker.

Just another damn reason why a car maker should not get to desperate in expanding their line up.

BMW: 1,3,5,6,7,X3,X5,Z

Mercedes: A,B,C,CL,CLK,CLS,E,ML,G,SLK,SL,S,SLR

I disagree. Merc's products are all highly competent. They just need to produce them better, it's not an impossible task. Volume = Economies of scale. Maybe Merc should be using joint ventures & partnerships in a better way
