My mom kinda' scuffed the read fender on her car. I don't want to go through the insurance for such small bullshit so I plan on fixing it myself. The colour of the car is white. The damaged area is about 25X5 cm. (10X1/5 in.). A few scratches are pretty deep so I guess I will need to sand the entire area and then repaint it. What do you guys suggest? Also, what should I use for rust protection?

Sand the area lightly around the scratch and then apply a primer. Look around for white primer. Harder to find, but better for covering with white paint. As for the top coat itself, maybe it would be better if you'll go to a pint shop for a quick spray. White had a ton of different shades just like any other color, and even if you'll find exactly the same shade that the car was originally painted, it doesn't mean that it won't be noticeable on the car.
In our club we have a few white and red ZXs, that everyone of them is different shade! That's due to paint fading and amount of polishes it had.
As for the rust protection, if you don't see bare metal - it's fine. If you do see bare metal - the primer will protect it. Do 2 coats of primer in that case.

Thanks Brembo, forgot to write more about the sandpaper. BTW, I did a similar job on my car last week, and I had a really deep scratch that I had to fill with body filler. So as a starter I've used 400 grit sandpaper on dry, and after filling 600 grit sandpaper on wet :idea: As you work along with 600 grit, it finishes really quick, so after a while it's about the same as 1000 grit. which is smooth enough to be covered with top coat.

Are these scuffed areas deep? If not, you may be able to apply a polishing cleaner to buff it out. Are you able to feel these scratches by hand? If you can't feel it then try using a mild abrasive cleaner. Don't use a rubbing compound, that will damage the clear-coat. If you need some suggestions on trying this, let me know and I will suggest to you what to do.
