Well, this is my prized moment in automotive sightseeing history. Unfortunately the image cannot justify the experience as well as I'd like, so I'll attempt to suplant it with the story behind the pic.
Taken January 04, almost exactly a year ago, I was riding my bike through an empty campus (as it was vacation time for most) on my way to pick up an exam. Low and behold, on a snowy and slushy day, I ride down the road pictured and pass a car that seemed familiar, but in a a completely unfamiliar way. Approaching from behind, i see the signature white horizontal lights of a mercedes, but I also catch a glimpse of the stacked "M M" which I know belongs to only one car: The Mercedes Maybach.
It wasn't until I had completely passed the car on my bike by 15 or so meters that it registered in my brain and I stopped. Until then, this car was something that only existed on my computer, in magazines and at car shows - not in the real world! I turned around in shock to see its elegant and prolongated body stooped on the side of the road, quietly purring that twin turbo V12. This is an approximation of the site i saw as I witnessed what followed:
By sheer chance I had decided to take my camera with me, and now I have proof of the most expensive car I've seen on the open road (and not at an auto show or official gathering - just by sheer dumb luck!)
The chauffeur was behind the wheel, so I didn't want to look like a complete dolt and start taking pictures w/ him watching. Then I witnessed him put it into drive, and pick up the lucky owner of the car. Pulling up to the right in the photo, an elderly man and someone who I presume to be his wife open the door of the most luxurious interior I've ever seen, get in, and then ride off into the winter weather.
I was more than slightly surprised to see one of these cars on the roads, especially during this rather nasty weather - slush and snow-dirt mix was all around and it had sprayed up onto the sides of the car a bit. I commend the owner for at least using it!
I apologize for not getting a better picture, but I was in too much shock at the time to really make any sort of strategy for procuring better images.
But if I ever see it again, I'll hopefully be armed with my camera, and a better strategy for experiencing this automotive masterpiece.

sweet catch, really rare. Nice you got a photo of it too. When I saw my Maybach down in Atlanta I had no camera to use. Still surprised nobody has caught one down in NoVA.
