Default how to unleash R34 GTR power? Edit: 7 or 8?

the skyline r34 is a 3.? v6 with 2 garret turbchargers, how come it only haves 280bhp? wich mod does it take to unleash all that power? i mean small mods that could give you the real power of that engine?

EDIT: Now if you had the option to buy a used car, and in front of you you have the evo 8 and the 7 wich one would you get?

Japanese companies have a gentlemans agreement to limit all cars to 280 bhp, the R34 probably makes over 300 bhp but they claim 280 to adhere to the "rules". With a stout straight six like in the skyline freeing up the exhaust and reverting to a single larger turbo can easily make gobs of power but it will be more peaky and less fun to drive in the end.

skylines are/were available with either the RB25DET (2.5 liter) or RB26DET (2.6 liter )engines, the 2.5 liter single turbo being found in the the RWD GTS model and the 2.6 liter being in the AWD twin turbo model.

independant dyno test have shows a R34 to actually produce in the neighborhood of 320-350hp, then the "gentlemens agreement (there was a extensive topic on this already) and the how manufacturers very conservitively tune the cars from the catorys

most of the time a simple boost controller can be used to extract significant hp gains outta a stock turbo car

the skyline/supra/300zx/vr4 TT all have extremely strong motors that can easily handle a few more pounds of boost before more mods are needed, and like gottacatchup said, a larger exhaust and a better intake can help horsepower quite a bit, in some applications a well made larger downpipe/exhaust can yeild over 40hp, and as long as the turbos are stock, the drivability and fun factor will be about the same

the only time you destroy the fun factor of the car, or the streetability is when doing a turbo upgrade to a drastically upsized turbo that has alot of lag, but for the skyline there are a myriad of options for them to keep lag down and increase power =)

Yeah, there was always the inside joke that once you change the exhaust on that car you could easily get another 50 hp.

Tuners been getting around 1000hp with extensive modification to the R34 for a while now.

Yeah that is true, its also stated ina auto exspress mag i got, says the 2007 scooby will come with 320bhp because of this

Anyone have a reason why Mazda called the RX8 the RX8 if they planned on it not being the replacement for RX7. I presume the RX7 will still continue the name.

The simplist way to unleash the power of any skyline or to be precice any japanies turbo car is to do the following.

1- high flow exhaust system
2- filter
3-Boost controller to increase the stock boost.

This will free up heck a lot of HP from the japanies beast..

By the way their is an RB20DET on a skyline.. R32 GTS

That straight 6 engine can handle a lot more than the 280ish power it's given stock (but cuz of gentlemen's agreement described above, it was limited).

All in all, it's one of the most tunable engines in the world, sometimes having over 1000bhp.

As far as I'm concerned it actually has more power than claimed in the stock version...Those 280 horses are just a manufacturer's claim to follow the agreement...It is said to put out well over 300hp, at least the latest MYs.

the RX in the RX8's name refers to the rotary engine and the 8 referes to its size. The RX7 will have the rotary engine hence the RX but will be a smaller, dedicated 2 seater car.

I'm not sure whether it has been mentioned here but the RX7 is most likely going to be a coupe-cab.

I'd go for the newer car, the 8, but I'd replace the front end and bonnet with the ones from the 7. I really don't like the front of the 8, and think the hood on the 7 looks much better.

personaly i would go one step further, get a full custom tune ECU to run on high octane fuel.

and go afew more steps further
low compression heads for the higher boost levels, forged internals, and forged piston sleves, anti-lag system, larger turbos to ofset the higher rmps/heat generated, hi flow designed with minimal heat soak intercooler, high pressure fuel regulator, and bigger injectors... and hope it lasts a while... mabey get a carbon kevlar clutch, and tripple cone synchros on 1,2, and 3rd gears... then add a roll cage, 5 pointe safety harness, no back seats, fire extinquisher, fuel cell, and battery inside the passenger compartment, camera mount, a truck full of suspension, wheel, and tire components...

rally car anyone?
mabey a little overboard here

LOL, a friend of mine has an R33 V-spec, and has a few mods out of your list

If my memory serves me right he has a custom tuned ECU, boost controller of course, forged conrods (not sure the rest of his internals are also forged), other head gasket, Nismo N1 360° rollerbearing Turbo's, dual pipe turbo elbows, other and de-cat exhaust system, induction intake kit, new radiator, new oil cooler, new oil pump, teflon heatshielded water and oil pipes, other camshaft (longer duration cams), lightened flywheel, other clutch (single plated though). I think that’s about it.

After the car has been homologated (which is a pain in the ass), new fuel injectors, a fuel pressure regulator and new fuel pump are on the menu, and some new mapping will follow.
