Any CLK you find will be a high miler for that sort of price range, IMHO.
What about a BMW Z3?
I dunno, there is a lot to choose from. Depends on what she wants. Does she want a true sports car or just a convertible? Can she drive a manual or are we limited to automatic trannys? I notice you're only suggesting imports so far but what about domestics? Heck you can pick up a 2000 WS6 or Camaro SS for 19k.
If you can be a bit more specific then you'll get some better responses.

Why not? I really like the Miata, and the MR2 is ok too. They are both more or less girly as you said, but I don't care about that. They handle well and are great fun to drive. That does it for me.
You said sports car, but I get a feeling that you mean convertible... Am I right?
Porsche 944 is a good sports car, and you get them both with and without folding roof. They are older than you are talking about, though...

depends if she wants a sports car or something to pose in. I'd say a CLK, Z3 or SLK (new one excepted) is very much a poser car while an MX5/Miata, Boxter, S2K or latest gen MR2 are proper sports cars.

nothing wrong with a miata, they are perfectly competent cars, and in my opnion the best 2 seat roadster ever made, great gas milage, decent performance, great value, reliable, easy to fix, and great aftermarket....
id glady put up my miata, or a particular blue one i got done with last month...against any z3/4 or s2000. clk, etc
the s2000 is nice...looks better than the miatas
the mr2 is cool, its midengined and looks fresher than a miata, and is less common than s2000s
the transams and the camaro converts are cool, but their build quality (start flame war) is proven to be less than that of the japanese cars and the gas milage is worse seeming they are v8s instead of 4 bangers.....however they are cheaper to fix than the mercs/beemers/audis
i do however like the audi TT has your mum considered that one, used ones go for a good price

S2000 or a Used Audi TT maybe a BMW 3 series? All depends on what she uses the car for.
