LOL. Perhaps getting a better graphics card will do. Sadly, Doom 3 needs like the best cards to get it to even run good.

Yeah, I was suprised how much the high end cards didnt do that much of a good job. I still havent tested my ATI 9600 PRO on Doom 3 so I dont know how much my 128mb can do.

Right now I am hoping that Half-Life 2 doesn't require has much graphic processing power as Doom3........if it does, that means my wallet will lose few hundreds ...

We have 3 PC's here with Doom3.
Mine is a P4 2.5ghz, 1GB RAM and a FX5600 256MB video card - plays comfortably at high quality 1024x768.
The next one is a Dual PIII 850mhz, 1GB RAM and Geforce 512MB 6800 video card - plays comfortable at high quality 800x600 (video card makes up for CPU)
The last one is a P4 3ghz, 1GB RAM, Geforce 6800 256MB video (wifes system - occasionaly used for Everquest.. ) - and it plays perfect at 800x600 ultra or 1024x768 high.

The secret is to NOT try run at 1600x1200 or some other crazy resolution
800x600 is still great detail and clarity - 1024x768 for showing off....

err I don't think that 6800s have 512 mbs of ram yet.
If you tell us your video card I could suggest some drivers. The newest ain't the best depending on your video card. But I would strongly suggest you change it.

Yeah - just went and looked at the machine... for some reason I have kept thinking that box had a 512mb card - I guess we can look forward to better performance in the future... I am now trying to remember the reason for paying $350.00 after rebate for the fuckin thing at Frys...

I'm surprised it runs at 800x600 at high quality. I guess the 6800 series really does own in Doom 3. How much did that Dual P3 setup cost?

The dual PIII's I have (use anther one as a file server as well) use the Gigabyte BXD dual boards. Originally intened for PII's - they have kept going and now house PIII's with after a bios upgrade.
They were about $400 back in the day. The best value mothernoards I ever bought. The fact that they are slot 1 is the only thing that will force their retirement.
Edit:
BTW - I do remember either swapping a 5950 ultra for a 6800 or vice versa because the one was not much of an improvment over the 5600 - and then settling back to the 6800's because Fry's had them for about $150 discount one weekend.
