BMW M GmbH takes super sports sedan motive power into a new dimension with the unveiling of its much-anticipated V10 engine destined for the M5. Each time BMW M introduces a new model, the focus of attention is rightly centred on what lurks beneath the domed bonnet bulge. The engine shares more than just its number of cylinders with the Formula 1 engine that powers the BMW WilliamsF1 team. Technology forged in the heat of motorsport has enhanced the processes and components used in this new powerhouse engine.

The BMW M V10 is the only high-revving power unit to be featured in a series-production car. The M5's V10 boasts a cubic capacity of 5.0-litres and produces a maximum output of 507 BHP and a maximum torque of 520 Newton metres, making the M5 the most powerful production model in the BMW line-up. It has been 20 years since BMW introduced the concept of the ultra-high performance sedan with the arrival of the original E28 M5. At that time the straight-six engine set the benchmark for naturally aspirated performance power units, and every successive M5 has continued this tradition.

M drivers thrive on accelerative thrust and driving dynamics. Engine torque and the transmission ratio significantly influence the drive forces at the driven wheels and the high-revving V10 allows an optimum transmission ratio, thus guaranteeing impressive forward thrust. The compact, high-revving normally aspirated engine boasts a red line of 8,250 rpm. Compared to the previous M5 V8 engine, performance has increased by a massive 25 per cent. In keeping with its racing bloodline, the M5 surpasses the magical 100 BHP per litre output, its specific output being on par with that of racing cars.

yea i suppose 380 is kinda low for such a high RPM but the curve is relatively flat for such a high revving engine. Its very difficult (from info i have read) to have a lot of low RPM torque when you are also pushing over 100hp/liter and redlining at over 8000RPM (8250 to be exact).

I guess you mean the "superchargers" that AMG is using....

Even before they used any SC.....torque was better for MB....

E39 M5 has 400Bhp and 500Nm

W210 E55 has 354Bhp and 530Nm.....

CAR magazine interviewed the head of th M division, and asked why they didn't go all out on the torque. He said that once you introduce more torque, you have to also place a bigger, tougher, but ultimately heavier transmission. It was this reason alone why they didn't join the torque race. It would make the M5 heavier, and thus more clumsy than they want. He said that the M division's ultimate goal was to have the best power-to-weight ratio in each class.

Which explains why MB's are too heavy to "fling around" compared to BMW's.

and AMG uses Superchargers, which add weight, and can be considered cheating.

Hell, even Gordon Murray, the man behind the McLaren F1, and one of the top guys at McLaren Mercedes, stated that BMW were still the better engine makers.


Oh...and if you want to really talk to somebody about MB's engines, go ask Kimi Raikonnen... I'm sure he's VERY happy with them.

yes I know but E39 only had a 4.9 liters engine , while the E55 was 5.5 liters, therefore e55 had better torque.
Maybe BMw should put a truckengine in their M-cars like Viper
