Suggestions for a good car ?

I am moving back to NY where i will once again have access to a full shop of tools so i can work on a car , i just got rid of a 240sx ( i can hear the laughter already) , But im looking for a car that i can have some freedom with modifying. I would like to just throw this out there to all you gear heads.
If you were to get a relativley cheap car that you were going to beef up that is still driveable, what car would you start with ?
Think fun fast and functional any suggestions ?
i would have done this as a poll but i just dont know where to start

well the 240sx is a great car for modification. put a SR20DET engine some suspension work, a full exhaust system and there you go. but at the end is how much are you willing to spend?

240 SX is a great modding car, can handle alot of power, and can handle witht he best of them.

im hoping i can pick up a car in decent shape for about 2 g's and then i guess ill just kinda pay as i go but ill put some work into it, the last 240 sx was good but i kinda abused the hell out of it in the florida heat. Any other suggestions besides the same car i just got done destroying ?

Toyota MR2 perhaps, if you want to have fun driving twisty roads while not spending much, get an N/A first generation one... Perhaps you can also pick up a supercharged first generation model, they are much easier to get more power from than N/A obviously.

get a mazdaspeed miata... its new this year... garret turbo.... nice car... handles like a miata on crack (good crack)....better than the toyota spider IMO

should focus on agility, handling, steering, and grip, not power...but should look cool if not beautiful. much like an Elise/Exige

jeez, 2grand.... i'd say a chevy cavalier is ur best bet for something w/ less miles.... i agree with everso....save up some more it'll be worth it in the long run.... thats what i did instead of getting a cavalier i got a mazda protege... i mean the cars completly underpowered but for what you get (quality wise) its a very good car..... depends on that u like tho....

A used Ford Focus ZX3 would be roughly on par with the Protege as well...though it's arguably not as good looking...a civic, 240sx, Probe GT, or older versions of the RX-7, Celica and Supra would also fit that price range, as could a used Miata, Taurus SHO, Thunderbird, Fox-bodied Mustang, a Camaro or Firebird (none of which could be very recent), or if you're really lucky an Integra GSR.

yea i agree with vanquish..... none of those cars will have less than 50k miles....(average).. i was looking for a while then just decided to save more and get a new model..... yea focus are going for around 6k.....
