If someone buys a car the legal way, they'll be paying a certain amount of money on taxes. If the car is confiscated because it was brought in illegally, and then sold in an auction, I would bet the govt is going to make a lot more money on the car then they would have had they only gotten the 'tax' money on the vehicle.

I bet she doesn't realise that what they're going to do is much worse, not for the smuggles who quite simply won't change a thing, but for the govt who is going to lose all that money they could have made simply by selling the cars onwards at an auction.

Nay. The auctions are conducted by customs themselves, with the smugglers' inside men sorting out everything. What happens is that the smugglers make the biggest bid, but only pay a very tiny amount in reality (because they line the auctioneer's and other customs people's pockets).
This really is the best way to solve the issue. Whoever paid the smugglers are now going to (or have already) throw a fit. And a smuggler who can't get his contraband past customs basically isn't a smuggler that can be paid.
