it does sound good but neither's really a surprise...
What porsche should do if it has BALLS, is make a stripped-out boxter or cayman, and sell it for a lower price... but they'll never do it because it'd enter 911 territory
[EDIT] Then again, if they make it "spartan" enough to not really compete with 911s anyway, maybe it could be done?

The GT3 is a stripped-out 997... and it costs more than the regular 911
|
Yep, and so is the CSL and 360CS.
Stripped out versions are always more expensive

nope, think about the previous Renault Clio Ragnotti (or was it the cup version). It had no aircon, less soundproofing and thinner glass windows. And Renault charged you about 800 euro's (estimate) less for it.

True - but we are talking about a car which takes engineering to reduce weight. Titanium connecting rods, 1-piece trackworthy wheels and a tailor made aero kit arent things to be given away

Actually it isn't. This only concerns that you have to pay more for "less" in most cases. That a Porsche/Ferrari/Bmw is more expensive and faster than a Renault is not really the point. The Principle is the same concerning all the cars mentioned above.

Yep its not just a stripped out version, its engineering perfection 8)

The 968 CS was a stripped out version.
The GT3, and the M3 CSL are both more powerful tan the cars they are based on.
CSL comes as standard with 360 BHP over standard car's 343, SMG Gearbox, better wheels, special tyres, carbon fibre and lightweight materials in it's construction.
GT3 has 415bhp over standard car's 325. It uses a racing verion of the 3.6 boxer derived from the one used in the 911GT1 Le Mans car, with titanium connecting rods and other lightweight internals which allow it to spin to 8400rpm. It also comes with specialist tryes, lightweight weels, adjustable downforce, bigger brakes, an aerokit, sports exhaust and clubsport pack.
968CS has same engine and chassis as regualr CS, with lower suspension and less sound deadening.
The was also the 968S whic as the set up of the CS but costed more because of it's aircon and Cd equipment.

Stuff that costs less to make, costs less. This is why the 968CS was cheaper.
The only case when Porsche has it's ideas upside down is with the cheaper to build Cayman costing more than the Boxster.
But stiffening up a boxster (to great effect) buy adding a roof, retuning the chassis and pretending you have another model in your line up takes balls.
However a I agree, I'll take a Cayman CS with PCCB and a locing diff.

thats another kinda of balls
and yes, simply a stripped-out car, that was all i was talking about, less luxury in the interior and therefore less weight... and a lower price tag

I'd expect to pay more for a locking diff though, and as for the PCCB, that's a 8k option.
In the meantime I'll stick with the GT3

Designed by engineers at the Porsche Development Center in Weissach, the Aerokit gives the Cayman even more 'bite' and even sportier, more dynamic looks. The front spoiler lips emphasize the visual power of the big air inlets in the front apron. The new, fixed rear wing creates a strong visual accent even when the car is standing still. Along with the car's appearance, its aerodynamics have also been upgraded. The Aerokit's components, optimized in Porsche's wind tunnel, reduce lift at the front and rear axles, making the car even more stable at high speeds. The aerodynamic components have been carefully matched and must therefore only be installed as a complete set. All the items in the Aerokit are supplied in the car's body color and harmonize well with the Cayman's dynamic styling.
Porsche supplies this Aerokit on all international markets. In Germany, it can be ordered via Porsche Exclusive for 3,500 Euros (excluding value-added tax) for installation on a new car. For later customization, it will be available starting in March 2007 from Porsche Tequipment for 2,950 Euros excluding VAT, installation and spraying.
