Yeah, I remember this too. I believe we came up with a few ideas as to what it come from too....

Locomotive Engine
Cruise Ship Engine
Water pump / Purification system
Large Generator

I forget the rest. But we all agreed that the lag would be a real bitch.

That's actually a turbo for a Boat.
Turbo was first used on a boat.
Saw that pic in a book about turbos.

Turbo's were invented because of airplanes. In WWII airplanes could only fly so high because the air was too thin for the engine to breath correctly so turbo's were used to get enough air into the engine so they could fly higher, and they're still used today but like you said not for your average air plane and this is also way too big. I think this is an industrial turbo for some sort of generator.
