networking problems

ill see if i can accurately describe what i have set up... as i seem to have forgotten exactly what i did a few months ago.

problem:
upload streams, and possibly d/l streams come to an abrupt end w/out warning affecting xbox live, and large file uploads. its quite annoying

cause: daisy chained routers likely set up incorrectly... i think

basically, there is a router upstairs where the modem, and my dad's computer are, and i have it set up where one port is sent to another router, then into the WAN port.
in order for me to connect the router to the internet, i had to specify the destination Lan ip... and default gateway.

in order for my router to recognize the other, it seemd i had to change the ip of the downstairs router.

solution? perhaps the ip is dynamic rather then static...
i am quite sure that i had no issues with this when i was ~able to have one router specify the IP range to both switches upstairs/downstairs. the ports were set up as a Uplink out, and port 1 input.

oi, my connections keep getting reset... at best, my downstream bandwith is cut to 1/20th :x :x perhaps this is partly due to the cable company :fist:
even on the computer on the first router is hitting only 1/4th downstream...

if it cant be recieved with flashget witch continuously reconnects, it may as well not be clicked on.
hopefully tomarrow ill have this problem fixed.... anyway, no networking wizards able to help me yet?

wait, did you say you were using 2 routers? i dont think thats good. i tryed that at one time and no good. why do you need 2 routers?

yes, logistical issues. i have to waite til morning to see if its the cable company's evil doing (mabey my dad forgot to pay a bill :sleeping: ) and this is a warning? lol.

anyway, i need a second router for the additional on-line material in my 'room' that is 1 floor away from the cable router. it would take oodles of cat5 e to span the distance... wasteful IMO since i already have a router/switch that can be used. its been working perfectly for quite some time (when i seemed to find the answer more easily) then i moved the stuff in my 'room' then lost proper connectivity.

/\ If you do want to use two routers, your're gonna have to set up the second one so that it is an access point rather than router... if your first router has an "Uplink" port on it, plug the second router's WAN directly into it, and it should autoconfigure.

My own network has a linksys router controlling a D-link wireless router in the exact same configuration and I'm have no issues wirelessly or cabled.

yes, i agree i never 'needed' 2 routers, but was just usuing what a always had... in kazoo, i suplied the router, but had no switch. anyway. the problem ended up not me being stupid, and forgetting how to turn off the routing feature on the second router... but a problem with the modem first, and also the cat5 cable had been chewed a little bit... so re-crimp here, and phone call there... good as new
