Mainly they dirty if someone has been using a high flow cotton filter with impregnated oil, especially if it has cleaned. The majority of people who re-oil them overdue it on the oil. Then the loose oil goes downstream and dirties up the MAF sensor element, throttle bodies; etc. Generally, the Ford MAF electronics housings are very reliable, but they are electronic devices and anything can fail. Try getting some electrical contact cleaner and spray a little on the little wire, usually you can tell if it's dirty by just looking at it. Do not touch it, let the contact cleaner dry itself off, it evaporates almost instantly anyways.

Many pilots of the time were the opinion that a fighter pilot in a closed cockpit was an impossible thing, because you should smell the enemy. You could smell them because of the oil they were burning.
