BMW is one of the few independent car manufacturers left. A few others are Porsche, and MG Rover. To stay independent, they need money to resist corporate takeovers. Toyota, in actual fact, could buy BMW tomorrow, if they wanted to, because they are stinking rich. The idea that 'more vehicles on the road = less exclusivity' is true, to an extent.

Premium manufacturers such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes need the money from these sales , as ever, to survive. The argument that doing such cars as the ONe, the A2 and the A Class will devalue the ownership experience of such marques does not really hold water. Why? For the simple fact that a badge is a badge, and its desirability is nigh-on impossible to devalue.

Do you think S-Class owners give a hoot that Mercedes actually manufactures BUSES and TRUCKS? 5 tonne trucks and buses with three pointed stars on them! Yet SL55 AMGs and A Class' still sell. BMW needs these sales to sustain profitability and independence, as well as wanting to reach their target of selling 1.2 millions vehicles a year.

The 1 does it for me, good looks, i'm sure the handling will be great, and the engines will get the blood going. I'm suprised that people are pointing out the Mazda3 issue. BMW have been slagged for making cars that look like nothing else over the past two years. The 'stupid 7', the 'flabby 5' and the 'sloppy 6'. Only the Z4, which occupies a market niche that prides its products on being different, has received wide, if faint, praise. And one that has a slight semblance of normality to it (a Mazda3 is as normal as they come), is critcised as well?

Should I have the opportunity to buy the One, i would. My family's going to need a new car soon, since we all drive, and this fits the bill. ANd when was the last time anyone has wanted/lusted after something the size of a hatchback?

Chris Bangle did the Fiat Coupe, and that looked pretty good. You cant really blame the board, because they judged him on his previous work.

BUt I doubt Claus Luthe would;ve have come up with anything more interesting. As it is, I would LOVE to see Ian McCallum working for BMW.

He did the DB7, mind you.

To my knowledge the BMW 3-Series was made to satisfy the entry level market. BMW has never been a company that prided itself on just being able to sell a lot of cars....that's Ford's job. They have been a company that works to build and establish a relationship with each customer. So what would be the point of pricing a BMW so low that they will sell only one car...and not gain a valuable customer that will be with them through several BMWs. Modern marketing is and has been growing towards relationship marketing. That is a fact.

They need the money to survive. If by making the One, and in the end get more cash, then I'm sure it will contribute towards BMW finally taking the decision to make a supercar, something to beat the crap out of the SLR, Audi's forthcoming supercar and, heaven forbid, the Porsche Carerra GT?

A Spiritual successor to the M1, and in a small way, the Macca F1, made possible by making the One series. Hehe. Sounds interesting. And the 2 series, and the 4 series...
