I do know BMW's tend to have a conssiderably high number of engine failures, so it should be normal for BMW to want to replace the engine with as little fuss as possible. They don't want any more bad publicity then is necessary...
And where did you find this bit of info? :roll: The only engine I remember that we faulty was with those damn rod bearing for the E46 M3, and they gave owners a new engine and 3 years extra warranty.

In seems that it is a common problem in that engine. In this Spanish forum more people had the same problem:

They should pay you a new engine.
