Need some suggestions
 

Hey guys, I'm still here. Been busy lately and working a lot of hours. :) But I just bought an '88 Honda Civic, and was debating whether or not it was worth it to upgrade it. I was thinking of a body kit and a paint job. But I don't want to put money into it if the engine is not gonna last. It's got some pickup to it and the engine still purrs. has over 150,000 miles on it, though. I don't know, was also thinking of changing the transmission to 5 instead of 4, but wasnt sure how the engine would hold up. Need some opinions, please.

Please don't modify your car. With the money you were planning to use on the car, replace the Honda with a better car. Of course, unless you love that particular Honda Civic model, but frankly, I don't think any Honda's worth any extra work.

yeah... and ur engine is probably good for another 150,000k... lol. my dad's got 487,500 kilometers on his accord, and the engine/trans has never been opened up.

487,500 km :shock: :shock: How much longer will it last? lol

yeah I had a friend who drove a Honda till it hit the 250,000 mark and he had stupid little stuff put on it. He got sick of it and his parents would only get him a new car if that one died so a drained oil pan and 2,400miles :shock: and a few neutral drops later good bye car. So basically the engines can last forever so if you want go for it but don't put big ass wings and ram air's etc... on the car if you go for a body kit keep it clean and simple.

For me the Civic you are talking about is a bit " old ".
I think is a bit dangerous to tune it!!
yes, you can put lots of body kits on you Civic but make attention to the engine!!

lol...Japanese engineering at its best...2400 mi...pretty hard to believe....but then my mom's car (a Contour) is still running on its first clutch at 112,000 miles.

lol, these Honda engines are brilliant. 2400 miles on no oil :shock: :!: :!: Thats impressive! My dad's car needs to last him another month, cuz thats when the Audi wholesale auction is happening around here.

Think about it: you are gonna spend money in modifying an old car with many miles run. With this money you can perfectly buy a better second hand car with more guarantees. If modified new cars (with few miles run) sometimes aren't good enough, imagine yours. Although everybody knows that Honda has got the best engines ever :P .
You live in USA. You've got better salaries than us that we live in Europe. The petrol is very cheap. Spend your money in buying a Mustang GT350 :D and forget your Civic. Or buy a Dodge Viper.
If only I lived in America :roll: . The first thing I would do would be to buy one of this cars.

i would just leave the civic the way it is pretty much. spend that money on keeping the car in good condition. like new air filer/oil filter check fluids and all, and that baby should last you as long as you will need it too. that engine doesnt make enough power to hurt itself lol j/k.

anyways if you really wanted to dress it up a tad i would go with a nice set of rims. nothing too flashy (like chrome or spinners) but 17 inch should do the trick. anything bigger would look out of place on an old civic, as would a body kit. also a new paint job cant hurt either in improving the looks of an old car.

just keep it tasteful pretty much. 8)

I'll agree with Jigga on this one...maybe a new air filter and a new backbox (nothing too big bore) and some nice alloys, even better if they are late eighties/early nineties alloys like Civic/CRX VTEC 5-hole 15"ers as per the pic below.

Forget the body kit!

I didn't say it ran well for 2400 miles but it ran lot's of knocking noises maybe the coolant leaked in and lubed it up. :wink:

You make me laugh those cars are NOT cheap by any means. Do you think that a girl who just started a new job and bought an old Honda Civic can afford a Dodge Viper even a '92? And a Shelby GT350... those things are really fuckin expensive if you want a good one that runs well and has a good interior/exterior, and an original condition or racing version can fetch more than a Viper.
