What's your take on: BEST MOTORING?

Personally, I don't like it much. It's not necessarily the language barrier... I can understand a bit (not enough to substantiate 3 years of study). I just don't like the layout and format. Compared to Fifth Gear and Top Gear, which encompass style, cost, and performance into a judgement combined with flavor and humor, Best Motoring is absolutely nothing. Although it may not be fair to compare the 3, since Best Motoring probably isn't the Japanese show meant for this idea, I still find it considerably uninteresting and overly subjective. There's too large of margin of error and variability. What's everyone else's take?

TT 02-16-2004 05:54 PM

I absolutely love BM videos, I have whole GBs of them :D it's completely different from TG or 5th, but you are sure you will see cars trashed on track ;)

There's marge of error ok, and the race aren't always fair, but what about TG and 5th gear? Everything it's up to Jeremy, Richard, James, Tiff or Vicki's taste ;) VERY subkective too ;)

yg60m 02-16-2004 05:57 PM

Don't agree at all !! :x
I love this program. Hard to compare to 5th Gear ot Top Gear because it's not in the same league. Where did you see a battle between an F40 an F50, a Lambo Diablo SV, a Porsche GT3, GT3, Turbo ? And so much other battles.
It's the only program that test the cars on 1/4 mile, 1000 m standing start.
They did it for the McLaren F1 for example.
Only this test is enough to make me love them

Yeah, I agree. However, I like Top Gear not necessarily for objective reviews, but more for.... well... everything! It shows me plenty of cars that I never even hear of in the states. They're presented with thought... style.... beauty. It's fantastic. They put a lot of effort into presentation. I doubt I'll ever have to choose between a Lamborghinis, TVRs, Ferraris, etc so it doesn't really matter much. I just like being educated and entertained. BM is just too plain. I'm impressed that they show the driving style (pedal cam) but it just doesn't mean too much. I guess it's because I'm not particularly fond of the Japanese style. I don't mind their cars too much though, seeing as how I drive one.

TT 02-16-2004 06:02 PM

Ah well sure if I'd have to choose just one it would be TG nonetheless :D buy you asked if we like BM and well, I adore :D

Yeah, I know they're not in the "same league", that's why I said "Although it may not be fair to compare the 3...". My problem with those supercar battles is that they're not presented in any beauty whatsoever. Once again, how often will we ever have a choice between those cars anyway? Straight line isn't overly impressive either. I know they compare track, but those can have their own issues with multiple cars. Though the Stig may be biased, so can BM's results.

Do you know if they ever comment on anything beyond the racing and the quarters? I guess I haven't really seen a full on episode.. do they ever go beyond and comment on cost, style, history, etc? I suppose I can somewhat appreciate BM, but in a comparison it's a 9.3 for Top Gear, a 7.8 for Fifth Gear, and a 5.2 for Best Motoring.

Sure they do! They do some very nice handling tests with cones, on the wet and more :D road test, their windy track, the touge.. ;)

They also talk sometimes about techinical solution, examining the car in every detail, lifting it to analyze the bottom of it, they talk about previous versions...

I suppose if I could better understand what was being said it would push the show up into the high 6's but I still like referring to articles, first-person accounts, and specs instead of this.

TT 02-16-2004 06:11 PM

Sure understanding them would be cool, but if you'd see a full DVD you'd discover they are lot more than simple quarter miles and races.

Do you have any full episodes? I usually just encounter "battles." In general, they show feels to dead and rigid. It lacks passion and soul. It's not pretty and colorful.

TT 02-16-2004 06:12 PM

Yes I have quite a few DVD, VCD and complete episodes and so on... the battles are just a small part...

Yeah, I always find that irritating. In addition to these full on "trackings" of multiple supercars. It just doesn't feel like these Ferraris are being dealt justice.

yg60m 02-16-2004 06:19 PM

Not always a joke when these EVO beat the Ferraris

Hehe, you can buy some VCD and DVD on ebay although lately there are less than usual... and there is also a good website that provides VCDs... yg60 could give you the url since I don't remember it LMAO.

And to pass you something like 22 CD-Rs and 7 or 8 DVDs would be complicated ;)

It's not fun, though. Who cares that a souped up Mitsubishi rally car takes on a Ferrari? It's like when people hollow old Sentra's out to their core, turbocharge them, NOS them, etc and then boast their 4 second Sentra's that can burn anything. Great. You're still only driving an street-illegal pile of crap that you couldn't even get hookers in (no seats).

TT 02-16-2004 06:25 PM

The "problem" is that Tsukuba is not meant for supercars... it's not so strange to see an EVO faster than a Modena since the Ferrari has taller gears while the Lancer blisters through corners.. but when the battles are Suzuka.. or even at Fuji, No more luck for fast saloons ;)

do you work for Best Motoring? lol

just one day...ONE DAY...i wanna see a Hachi Roku old 80s drifting Toyota BEAT an Enzo Ferrari. LMAO
Hehe  i would like my friend ! Being paid to push the cars on a track ... only St-anger has a better job
I think the Enzo vs the Toyota is for the next issue

Chingachgook 02-16-2004 06:28 PM

Best Motoring ROCKS! I adore it! they reaòòy frive the cars HARD!look at Mr. Nakaya changing gear without lifting the accelerator, ao Dori Dori going sideway with everything under his hans, or Gan San, the "old man", he never gives up...the handling test, the battle, the analyse of the car...it's fantastic! I love it maybe more than Top Gear, yes...

isn't Hachi Roku... 85 meaning it's an '85 Toyota?

gis 02-16-2004 06:49 PM

I agree, I'm always downloading Top Gear and 5th Gear Video and loved watching them. I've downloaded a couple of Best Motoring video but never liked it. Don't know why, but it's my point of view

BTW, this is my first post, found this site couple months ago, and I absolutely loved this site!!

SFDMALEX 02-16-2004 07:05 PM

I love best motoring because they do what no one else does. It is obvious from watching that the guys in BM dont use the best lines, or have the best driving skills(at least when they are on camera) except a few, but their battles still give you a fair idea of the cars. Its entertaining and nothing else compares, although they are baised a lot of times its still one of the best shows out there.

oscargarza88 02-16-2004 09:09 PM

i also lobe BM!!!
becaus they put soo many fast cars against other cars at the same time, so its more interesting than watching the stig doing laps, and specially how the "grandpa" drives! i love t how he drives as if nothing mattered.
btw tt do u have any BM vids where they test the subaru wrx sti? becuause i want to see that car perform againg their competition

HeilSvenska 02-16-2004 09:26 PM

Best Motoring has very good ideas for a show. But the thing is...the guy(who says stuff) sounds retarded in typical asian manner(im an asian)...like in overly enthusiastic asian way...which i hate

HoboPie 02-16-2004 11:31 PM

I've got a couple slightly older eps I might be able to put up in a while, but they are subititled and complete. They have an entire downhill run in each car just to determine how livable it is.

I like watching it because it puts a ton of cars in similar conditions. It really gets rid of a lot of variables like the even the presenters mood you can get from Top Gear and 5th gear.

I'm not saying all there is to a car is performance, but there usually a nice performance conclusion especially with repeat cars.
