M5 drive
OK, as I promised when I wrote a few words about 911 Cabrio drive, here are some impressions about BMW M5:
All in all it's a great cer, cant say anything else. When you leave the engine in 400 HP mode it's comparable to quite a few supersloons, but when you push the Power button, it's out of this world ... Performance above 200 kph is better than in 911 or Maser coupe. Unfortunately it was wet and cold when I drove it (I hope wether will be better nex week, I'll call you then, komotar), so ESP was cutting in at 200+ kph (I got pretty sideway at that speed once or twice when I turned it off), but the car is extremly controlable & driftable. It's a pitty that it's limited to 250 kph, speedo was showing 269 to 273 (on HUD), it would easiliy go 300+ ... 2 vids from highway, in one i got to top speed ... 1 vid so you can hear the engine, another one from my mobile accelerating from 40 - 240 kph. The plinking noise is the computer warning thet the tires are limited to 210 kph (winter tires) ... http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/50...t3foto-med.JPG http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/50...304_115248.3gp http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/500/15921SUC30007.MOV http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/500/15921SUC30008.MOV http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/500/15921SUC30011.MOV Vids are 5-6 megs max ... Next report: mid march, F430 spider drive ... |
kewl .. thx fer the vids .. gonna download them today :)
you also work for a magazine or something ? 8) |
Damn....please fill us in on how you got to drive this car, and the upcoming one in the F430
I envy you so much.....do you have any pics to share of the car? :) If not I hope komotar will bring along the camera next week :D |
NICE work! Thanks for the read. I missed how you managed to score this ride, are you reviewing cars or something? I agree it will be cool to push the car further when the roads are dry  Thanks for the post, keep us updated w/ any other facts or insights you may have. :D
|
I didnt upload any exteror pics, there are many around (check any bmw site). There's a F430 spider press launch in march, I hope i't not too cold to drive topm down ...

Thx for the update. I'm looking forward to your call. If you don't mind, I'll bring my camera, to snap a few shots and maybe make a short vid. The engine sounds rasp and agressive. I see you hit the Ljubljana-Vodice route. Cool 8) All this freakin' snow is making me crazy. I hope next week will be better. Slišmo. |

Dude, next time you definitely need to take a digicamera with you for some high-res to fed our desires!
|
ya man!u're so lucky!Damn!Your job is my dream.Driving so many cars,Thanks for the vids. They really give the impression of being there...kewl...

Thanks for the videos - it definitely has an engine note similar to the e46 M3, but somehow more aggressive and refined. How did you manage to film and drive that fast?!
|
Great, you are brave -0,5 C and 250 km/hod. :D
thanks for pics and vids |
the M GmbH HQ offers potential M5 buyers to test drive the M5. not sure if that's how you get to drive the car.
thanks for the video! |
@twboy1999: yes, I had to go to a meeting 30 or so km from my office, i had a digital camera in my pockjet so I deciedd to do some vids for you guys. I held the cam with one hand (not really looking at what I recorded, so half the vids were useles). Hnadling is great for such a hevy car, but since there were really slippery patches out there, I had to be careful, so I just did some drifts and similar stuff. I hpe to get the car o track for a few laps next week, but it looks like it wont happen (weather and time :( )
@TT: maybe komotar and I will be able to fix something. But since I drive this cars as my work beside all other things to do, it usually happens that I only have my mobile with me. @dingo22: I couldn't speak properly or the firs few minutes so give him a break :D @bmwmpower: i did check the road on the first run ... I like to live ... @tiofsi: no, it's a press car ... |
That car sounds soo good. Cant wait to see one on the road!
|
Gotta say, that sounds like quite an experience. Very thrilling i'm sure. thanks for sharing!

An intersting update (not for komotar, though): M5 is dead.
This mornin a colleague of mine was driving through the city (like 50 km/h, 1500 rpm) and the car suddenly started producing terrible noises. I cam by 10 mins later (to make a photo with my mobile), and from the sound of it I thing engine internals are gone. I think it will go back to factory fotr engine swap, so no more fun nex week. And it had only 2500 km on the odometer, 14 days old. Man, when BMW screws up, they do it properly. I wonder how much a new engine costs. 10K EUR? 20K EUR? Oh, well ... http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/50...24A0007fix.jpg |
Oh, that will be a seriously expensive repair. I've already heard that the M5 engine is not as reliable as it should be being a BMW... But well, cars from the initial run are always problematic regardless of the manufacturer.
You probably shouldn't have gone flat-out since the car wasn't properly broken in. :) But that's rubbish if the engine wasn't faulty it wouldn't get screwed. |
Quote:
this is not happening! Do you expect to get the car again? Say yes. |
s*it... thanx for vids I hope not the last :?
|

Hoping that you can make new vids with that car again... |
@mv: the car had over 2000 km, so it's allowed to run with top speed for a limited period of time and it's OK to use full throttle (which you shouldn't under 2000 km's)
@komotar: I'll know more on monday when the service people take a look at it but judging from what I've heard in the engine I don't hink so. At least not very soon ... |
Quote:
pm me with the good or the bad news. I defenetly want to know, what exactly happened to the engine. thx for the update. |
Quote:
as a future owner of the M5, i am also eager to know what exactly went wrong. |

Let's stop this talk untill you will have pics to show us :)
|
jak- what kind of noises was it making? clacking? rattling? heavy clunking? or was it squealing/groaning? I'd be interested to know what happens to it because this could mean in immediate Service Bullitein here in the States when the car is delivered..if the VDCs don't get to it first.
|
Heavy clunking, I would think. Something banging mettalicaly inside the engine, like torn con-rod or something like that ... I'll let everybody know, but probably not very soon. I guess they will not open the engine here in SLovenia, but put the car on the truck nad send it to Munich ...
|
shit..i hope they aren't having that con rod bearing problem on the S85 as well :? They'll open the engine up for sure there Slovenia and check it out. probably yank the oil pan first. Then they'll call tech hotline and get told to swap engines, so my guess is that you'll have the car back in 5 days provided they have enough engines to send a replacement.
|
Well - at least y'alls beemers have HP/L... ;)

Blown engine already? Wow. I thought those engines are pretty protected by software management, preventing it from over-revving when it is cold, electronic fuel cut off and of course could you "over-rev" w/ SMG?
Hey, aren't those rims on there the M6 rims? |
Tifosi is a member at M5board.com. He is NOT lying...
|
Quote:
@foxhoud: you're right. You can't overrev it (it's an SMG), cant rev it hard when it's cold and so on ... |

Ok who is leeking the videos? I found this link on my mercedes forum ima member of of all places. Who started this topic? |
Quote:
but defintely not in North America, as they haven't even done the work on US-spec M5 yet. |
OK, here's the news.
The oil pump broke, and as the car has dry-sup oil system the engine was intantly starved of oil. Most of the bearings are "kaput", the extent of the rest of the damage is being determined. It look like the car will be fixed here in a few days (engine swap is very possible), so it looks like we'll be getting it back for a week or so ... |
A problem very similar to the one that afected the engine of the M3 E46 3.2 I6....
5% of the engines broke down... |
Quote:
Are we still on for the ride? if you'll find time ofcorse.... |
Quote:
what they replace depends on the parts available. if they have enough engines, then it will more than likely get an engine. but if not, then they'll replace the crank and all bottom end bearings. hopefully none of them spun :x my money is on engine though. |
Actually Im relieved. It doesnt sound that bad, not like the M3 problems. This is soemthing that can happen to all engines, right?
|
Thjey'llsending the pump to Munich to check, bus as far as I know it's not a special pump and has seen use in other engines ... I'd bet on on-off failure. Havent heard of any like that on the new M5. I'm going to restyled 7 press launch on monday, I'll check with BMW guys there.
|
I would seriously hope that this is a one off failure. My shop foreman already saw this thread today and all i heard from across the shop was 'AWWW FUCK!'
I would be amazed if the M division made the same mistake twice. But i wouldn't be surprised if they get a bit nervouse when they look into that pump failure  Hope you can get some pics of the face lifted 7 8) |
