How did your passion for cars started, because of parents, tv, friends, JW,
no reason at all, etc...
My passion for cars started when I was 7 years old(I think), when I was
watching tv, I was changing channels when suddenly I caught a glimpse of
a weird looking car, an F1 car, I was fascinated by the strange looks, the colors, the
noise it made and the ppl involved. From then on I started getting
interested in my fathers car, in those days a toyota van.
Well I think the rest seems obvious of course.
What about you guys, how did it started?

i've always had a significant interest in cars, so i would probably say my dad is responsable for that. after that i would say tv and movies like gone in 60 seconds. i can't really pinpoint an exact time when it started b /c it was a gradual obbsession.
Impossible to tell, I always thought it was in the blood... since a little child I collected pics, magazines, watched cars for hours while sat near a road or by my window... I always loved and needed to drool on cars... as simple as that :)

Thanks dacmac and TT for answering, seems a lot of members don't even know
how their passion for cars started :?
IMO in most cases it starts to soon to be able to explain why... it's rare that somebody wake up one day at 20 or 30 and become a car nut... most of us were like that since their childhood :D

Yeah I know TT, I just thought it would be interesting to know how it started with
the members at JW.

My influence came from my older brother. He is 11 years older than I so he had his license while I was still a little kid. When I was about 10 he started taking me to the drag races and to hang out with his friends while they worked on their cars. I basically just grew into it being around gearheads all the time.

my interest was first in CATapillar's ...... huge earth moving bemoths since i can remember. i still am facinated with them; but that later progressed into cars with a few cars. the first lamborghini i saw... a green Countache..... simply amazing. then later, my older brother (by 7 years) bought a 92 mustang LX 5.0 5 speed... the rest is history

I got started through my father as he had all types of cars when I was young, Corvettes and Porsches, I just loved going for rides with him and then I would steer while he worked the pedals and then I started taking the cars out when I was about 11 years old in parking lots early Sunday mornings and driving the 1969 Porsche 911E (sold) by myself with him in the passenger seat and then I started to deliver tofu over the passes to the hotels on the other side and then my story became that known as Intial D, LOL. Everything is true until the tofu part.
When I was 4 years old my dad gave me some Corgi Rockets cars - not the goofy "fantasy" ones.. but the "realistic" ones - like in his colleciton.
I still rememebr the first 2 cars:
A Ford Capri Rally car and the Chevrolet Astro show car..
I have been obsessed with all things automotive ever since.
Wow - I even found pics of the models online!

They were the "Tune up" editions. You used the gold key to snap the chassis off, so you could replace the wheel/axle sets if they got bent.

Gran Turismo 2 did me in. When I first got it, I would be playing that game until 5 in the morning, go to bed, get up 2 hours later and go to school. That was... 8th grade maybe?

I always loved cars -- When I was around 10, my grandpa's friend showed me his 1984 Ferrari GTO and then gave me a model car ( also GTO) which he had in his office. I still have the model car in my room ( although the model is a little beat up now), and that got me started with Italian cars. Then when I got my drivers licence i became obsessed with cars.

Well, I can remember how at the age of 3 I used to sit in the garden and play with my police-Jaguar-XJR toy. But I became a real fanatic when I saw my first F40 in a Ferrari saloon. Then there was the London motorshow, I saw my first DB7, F50, TVR etc. And a few Ferraris and a black Diablo I spotted on the streets of this city. With every sighting the interest just built inside me.

I don't really know, i didn't really have interest in cars when a young boy, just liked to see Ferraris but not much, i think it starts at 11 when buying my grand father gave me some mags, then i bought a supercar mag including a Testarossa test and i saw a Testa the day after  , i was really shocked by this car, i think my passion comes from all these things united :D

I started out watching F1 when i was living in Scotland in 1990 (i was 6 years old). The first few races i watched were a blur, but I remember a race i once watched when Mansell drove through the rain and completedly decimated the entire field. That's what got me started on Williams till this very day.
I first got into BMWs when my parents bought a secondhand E34 520i in 1992, since my mom was a BMW fan (not a complete car nut). I remember when she drove it for the first time (a test drive) and pressed the brake pedal a bit too hard, and we all crashed against our seatbelts. First thought was : Bloody hell, did we hit something??
In the end, we ended up criss-crossing the UK looking for second hand BMWs for my uncles who lived back home and wanted to get secondhand models. Uncle 1, we found him a nice black E30 323i, Uncle two got a calypso red E30 318i. So you can say i was pretty chuffed when BMW and Williams decided to team up. :D
So there, love and fanaticism for BMW sealed. It sort of grew over the years, pretty slowly, but in 2002, when i was studying away from home, but still i Malaysia, i had the opportunity to buy lots of Autocar, BMWCar and Total BMW magazines, which caused my obsession, and my rather limited bank of knowledge to just skyrocket. My booksheleves are starting to wilt under the strain. And i just splurged out on more car books and mags recently. I guess my harddrive is starting to take the strain too.
I guess that's my car obsession story.

I blame my grandmother. She was walking me in the baby carriage a lot when I was small. She taught me many brands badges when I was only two years old! I could tell you if we were looking at an Audi or a Volvo (or other normal brands) already then. My dad was so proud!

Cool, you're granmothers liked/likes cars, my family thinks of cars as a way of transportation and that's it.
This has nothing to do with this thread, I never had a girlfriend that loves cars, I hope someday I'll meet her.

my father bought me a used 911 after i´d taken my final exams when i was 19 or so, but unfortunately i smashed it just weeks later
from that time on i´d been in love and infected with the Porsche virus, and you guys know how it ended up.... :D

Btw, shouldnt those two female members that joined a couple of weeks back say something on this thread? I';d like to know how THEY got hooked on cars.

hehe, no, i never had a major accident again after that crash, i attended some driving schools and soon began to drive cars on the track and learned a lot, so I always had been a very safe driver, but also fast, when necessary
so my first Porsche´d been a 1975 911 2.7 out of the G-series. this´d been a very special Porsche, because it already used the 2.7ltr. engine that has been used in the RS as well, and not the 2.4ltr one of the ´73 cars. 210hp and only ~1100kg weight….a very “dangerous” combination for a 19year old….
