I'll try to be as short as possible especially since the "how" is not that important, but well, yesterday I was reversing out of a parkplace, checked in the mirrors, all was fine, turned my lovely head.. all was fine, GO! ... BOOM!.. LOL, an Ibiza suddently appeared, passing by in the small road and got hit by my mighty rear bumper's left corner... since we were both moving, although not that fast, the damage in his side was pretty impressive for the speeds involved :(

The sad part is that it's my fucking fault... luckily my car didn't suffered to much of a damage... here are a couple of pics

Yes, I know, the car is sure very clean :D

The corner of the bumper was slighty deformed, ence those plastic strip bumped out of its track, but I managed to make it slide a little so it remains just some scratch in the paint and the invisbile deformation.. and maybe some special polish would fix that too...

Well here is the question... any idea about how much could be asked to fix the damn Ibiza?
I talked with the guy today (and already informed my insurance and launched the "thing").. he already quickly went to a garage where they warned him that maybe he will need to change the whole body part..
Ah yes, I hit him some 30 cm in front of it's rear wheel, then since he was moving forward, the damage is also a little on the overfender and on the side of the rearbumper (very minor here)... the garage said the "hole" beeing to big, the won't maybe be able to have mean to apply the force to bump it out.. in that case they would need to change the bodypart...
The car was luckily "only" a small Ibiza (the last model) and not a Maybach ;) but still, I'm pretty worried about the price.. if there is to buy a new body part, paint it and fit it.. the price risks to rise quite quickly..

And since I can't wait for the results of the investigation of my insurance, i was wondering if somebody can maybe already shoot some prices right away :D

Basically if it would be less than around 1700 USD it would still be better to pay it myself instead of the insurance to avoid rising to much what I pay yearly to them... but hell, if it would be close to that I would be seriously pissed off!!
Of course if they could simply bump out and polish the Ibiza it won't be even close (I hope.. because here in Switzerland it's not cheap at all when you have to do such things..)

Any ideas...

Damn, Sorry TT
hate when that shit happens.
cant really give you a guess as to the price. where i live, we dont have the option of paying out of our own pocket. gotta let insurance handle the whole thing, and end up getting bent over in the long run.......

Oh well not a big deal.. the 320 was my aunt's car for some 30'000 km.. and she never had to many problems in ramming everything she had in sight :D of course I'm not happy when I approach my car from the back :!: but it's not the end of the world and the important part is that nobody get hurt and that the other guy was as positive as me even if he was taking his car home after a check up at a garage LOL!

Anyway yes, here is very cool.. the insurance will check up his car, will pay for the repair costs and only after that they will write me with the bill, indicating how much they paid and how much would my insurance change.. and then I can choose to pay the bill myself to keep what I pay them the lowest possible :D
And that way the dude will get his car fixed pretty quickly too...

But well.. if it would arrive some 1000 or more USD it won't be a happy day.

LOL it's normal :) that balck plastic strip is actually in 3 pieces.. a central one and two curved ones on the corners ;) and thanks to that small gap between them, I was able to make it slide and put it back in place but thanks a lot for the concern :D

it depends on how many panels are damaged......and the severity.....if there is damage to two or more exterior panels.....the price(for a body shop to do the work) can get high very quickly indeed.....know ne one who can do the work on the side for u TT?

TT
03-10-2004, 04:02 PM
No, I have no friends in the business and anyway when the insurance is involved they will do that their way of course. And clearly the car not beeing mine, I can't really take decisions as long as the owner won't do something completely crazy...

I begin to be slightly worried...

Sorry to hear this, TT. Your precious Beemer being hurt. :( Sadly I have no idea what you're looking at in terms of costs.

TT
03-10-2004, 06:43 PM
Yes and to think I could use that money to change my bumpers or finally buy some new and reglable suspensions.. but no.. now I have to invest in a stranger's Inbiza

Sadly, impossible to believe, I didn't have my digi-camera with me... but it was anyway quite a big present I left on that poor Seat :(

Well I dented the rear side panel of an Oldsmobile Alero and did some good damage (enough to have to replace the panel stupid cheap fiberglass) It wasn't my fault since the girl parked too close to me in our school parking lot but I offered to pay for it and it ended up beeing around $700 it would have been $550 to fix the damage so I just payed to get it replaced. *note* I didn't have to pay for labor and that would have been another $600! so for a shit box Ibiza it shouldn't be that much and if it is, have your mechanic look at it. PS: I had the work done at a dealer also.

TT
03-10-2004, 08:59 PM
Thanks for the input T-Bird. You know, the Ibiza may be a shit box, but still under the big wing of VW... and here in Switzerland as I said, you can't really get away with such things for cheap.. and just the labor is usually at least some 80 USD (easily more) per hour...

T-Bird
03-10-2004, 09:14 PM
yeah VW may have a big wing but the General has got a commanding grip too. hopefully it won't cost too much. good luck with this man.

Of course I will keep you all up to date with my useless shit :D .. and if I will stop posting all of a sudden it could be just two things..

- heart attack
- I had to sell everything to pay the damage :D

I had an experience crasing a VW , the Gol , based on the Polo , so near the size of the Ibiza here in Chile .

The whole rear bumper was 350 mil pesos , that is like 600 dollars plus labor ... luckyly here insurance pay everything . , i bet it wont cost you less than 900 dollars , sorry TT , but good luck and keep us informed how much was at the end

TT
03-10-2004, 09:28 PM
Oh course I could make the insurance pay.. but when they pay, the just rise the yearly rate.. so it really depends.. if it's low enough it will be worth to pay myself, if it begin to be near the 1500-2000 USD, it would be worth to make them pay and just have the quota raised :(

I don't really see a very happy ending for this situation.. but maybe I will be surprised.. you never know

T-Bird
03-10-2004, 09:35 PM
just out of curiosity what would the deductible be for this?

TT
03-10-2004, 09:38 PM
Sorry but I fear i didn't get this one

T-Bird
03-10-2004, 09:46 PM
Well in the States you have to pay a certain amount of money towards the damage mine is $500 and then the insurance covers the rest that's standard here and if the cost is less than the deductable the insurance company doesn't get involved any farther.

TT
03-10-2004, 09:49 PM
AH okok so:

Here for driver younger than 25 (I will turn 25 at the end of may obviosuly  ) it's 1000 Swiss francs, that's 775 USD. I have to cover the fuirst 775 anyway yes. Then I can simply decide, when the final price will be finally unveiled, if I want to insurance to cover the rest or if I prefer to do it myself.

altezza
03-10-2004, 11:33 PM
sorry to hear that TT :(
hopefully the final bill will be much less than the expected amount
my guess is that it will cost about $1000 USD.... :|

That sux man, don't know how much it would cost, but my parked '98 prelude was backed into by some guy a month ago, dinged the hood and and the left head light pretty good. It was around $2100 US to fix it. Good thing he left his insurance info on the windshield, most people would just drive away if the other party wasn't there.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck TT...what a damn pain....and yes it would be lovely to turn the clock back...as this has been indeed a very costly week for some of us.

TT
03-11-2004, 02:00 PM
Ok, I have a price finally.. and it was very quick.. sadly it's also very high :!:

And here it is... to repair the damn Ibiza... a whole 3700 CHF = 2895 USD = 1600 GBP

I don't think I have to point out how beaten up I am after that nice phone call that I got today :(

Of course it's high enough to make the insurance pay, but anyway I will have to pay some 2300 CHF myself (1800 USD, 1000 GBP)... this include the deductable and the rise in the costs that will be spread over 4 years.. then after 4 years I will begin to pay again the usual low rate, but well... in the end those 2300 Swiss francs are gone...

Guys, next time you see an Ibiza near your car, just one think, throw away the key and RUN, RUN!!

callen
03-11-2004, 02:04 PM
why do u have to pay nearly 66% of the total cost? this is very high! I feel for you TT good luck!

TT
03-11-2004, 02:14 PM
Because it's like that.. the first 1000 CHF are up the me anyway, doens't change with the total.. if the damage would have been let's say 800.. no insurance needed... in my case or for a 300'000 CHF damage, the first 1000 would still be up to me...
And the rest is the obvious rise in the costs of my insurance due this accident.. and luckily it is spread over 4 years... but still

Next time I will have to completely crush the other car to make it worth ..

Jabba
03-11-2004, 02:16 PM

Thanks Jabba, you know I appreciate, and of course you also need mine for the lost money as combs and sons needs ours... terrible week...

03-11-2004, 02:36 PM
I am just waiting for KH to turn up now with an even worse story than our's....in fact come to think of it he was proabably the one that was driving that Ibiza...stole coombs and sons bike and picked the wallet up containing my money.

TT
03-11-2004, 02:39 PM
HAHAHAH!! ;) this was a good one ;)

BTW, I just realised that I paid my 320i some 4700 CHF to my aunt when she had to change car... of course the car was worth some more than that... but to think now 3700 are needed to fix a small Ibiza is pretty impressive! And with that money I would have preffered to change my suspensions and maybe paint again the car :( but no... now all is invested in Seat ...

yg60m
03-11-2004, 02:47 PM
I am with you too TT, really sorry for what happen to you :(
This Ibiza was made in gold ! :? Or i guess mechanics in Swizterland are paid with gold bars !!

TT
03-11-2004, 02:51 PM
Yes it's the second option.. sadly here if you take your car to fix the smallest of the scratches you can't expect to pay less than 500 CHF.

That's why many Swiss living near the italian border are used to take their cars in Italy to fix them... but in that case it's impossible sadly.

yg60m
03-11-2004, 02:56 PM

... now i know where to place my money : trading VW !

TT
03-11-2004, 03:02 PM
The more I think about that and the more I wonder if somebody is trying to fool me... that amount of money is, even in Switzerland, at least impressive.
But well, I can't simply believe that my insurance wants to fuck me in the ass or somewhere else... it simply doesn't make sense.. and the car was new, so pretty hard that the owner trying to include other things in my bill...
The only small doubt is about the fact they really have to change the whole panel because they can't bump it out..

yg60m
03-11-2004, 03:14 PM
On new cars, they don't take the pain to bump i fear : they prefer change all : it's a better deal for them , not really more work and more pricey. As they earn more money on fixing and after-sale than on selling cars i can easily see why they want to change the whole thing ... now i am not an expert and i didn't see the Ibiza.

TT
03-11-2004, 03:17 PM
Yes sure you are right.. and even the owner would for sure prefer to have a new panel instead of a bumped one fixed.. but the insurance's expert that was there should have pushed toward the cheaper and better solution I suppose.. since basically he was representing the insurance company but poor Matteo too... so maybe there was really no other option..

Tomorrow I will phone them again and see if I can speak with the person who was there checking the car

stradale
03-11-2004, 06:01 PM
That's costly! I feel sorry for you, TT. I hate situations like this, when it's going to cost you regardless of what you do. This sucks big time...

TT
03-11-2004, 07:17 PM
How much did you crush that damn seat??

I wonder cuz that sounds like silly money to me if its only one panel that are damaged......

I would do some calls and check up how much a new panel and paint would cost on a independent garage, and if its only to change the panel it cant be to much in labour cuz thats done in one hour to rip the old off and fit a new one....

It feels like you are being screwed over TT..... :(

Yes, tomorrow I will try to find out some more infos.. but well... to rip of and fit a new panel could be quick, but you have to consider it has to be painted too... and just to paid the small black plastic strips around my 106 (the 2 front corners and the rear bumper one), in white (the cheapest color I guess), I paid years ago some 400 USD. si, to buy a panel, paint it, fit it, rip off the rear bumper and paint it too... well.. could be :(

mk1gti
03-12-2004, 12:22 PM
I just mean the ripping and fitting part takes one hour.
Get the prize for the damaged panel, and the prize for the paint job the labour will be included in the prize of that.
Then just add one hour of labour and see how much you are off from the prize they gave you....

I think 1 hour, would be a bit to short time to change the back fender of a car, it would take several hours as it's usually means lot of welding and shit...

TT
03-12-2004, 12:26 PM
And BTW, the fucking rear panel is damn big in the Ibiza.. beeing a 3 door it covers everything from the front door, back toward the rear bumper and also rise behind the rear window if I remember correctly... shit it's 25% of the whole body of the car!! :D

TT
03-12-2004, 01:02 PM

Holy shit ... then i think the price is very reasonable :D

Well, I'm not an expert on that matter, but as far as I could see an remember..

The colored part is just a single panel :( I maybe br wrong... but I doubt there is a joint between the rear widow and the rear lights...

^^ Yeah i think u r correct TT, and the expensive thing about that panel is that it is welded to the car, not just a bolt on piece i believe. U sure chose the right part to hit!!!
Sum bloke T-Boned me in a little hyundi piece of shit hire car, when i was in my landrover defender, needless to say he came off a lot worse, but it did leave a rather large dent and hole just after the door. His insurance payed for it fortunately.
Sorry that u r on the other end! arnt £1000 excess on insurance policies absolute cunts!

TT
03-12-2004, 08:00 PM
Thanks brembo and coombs and son ;)

Sadly I really can't see why the price should be completely off... I will still try to have more details.. and of course the final price won't be exactly the same.. but not much different... (I just hope not more than that!! :D)

TT - you only have to pay the 1000 now - correct? The rest is paid monthly as an increase in your insurance bill?

Or are you prepaying 4 years insurance?

TT
03-13-2004, 06:41 PM
Nono, I will just have to pay the 1000 CHF right now while as you said, the rest (some 1300 CHF) will be paid 1/4 every year for the next 4 years.

sorry to hear about the accident, as ive been in one quite costly one myself (slid my saab 9000t into, and almost under a Ford Explorer, i scratched his bumper, he killed my saab. i must also note the impact was at, or under 3 mph, or about 7kmh, but the bumper elevations on each car were totally different, so had no effect on my car)
im suprized how much its costing you for the ibiza, let alone all the costs of the parts, and labor. i have several mechanic friends myself who ive helped, and have enlisted thier help on my vehicles. one is primarily engines, and the other is primarily body work. judging how you describe the accident, it seems like the ibiza doesnt have a steel, or iron brace inside the exterior paneling, thus making it dent deeper, and need total repair. most of the vehicles im familiar have these braces that act in a duel purpose to protect the inhabitants, and such.
to replace a panel on my jeep would end up costing about 1200 w/ labor.
one thing that insurance companies often do in the states is ask for multiple quotes for repair, and issue the check for the cheapest estimate, and more if it costs more.
once more, if you are familiar with any non-dealership shops, they often are cheaper, and are more personable to deal with then a huge corperate tool.
good luck.

TT
03-15-2004, 08:05 PM
Thanks dude.. yes, like you I think there was nothing behind the panel... and sadly since the insurance has to deal with it and not me, I can't decide where to take his car.. (I won't be able to do that anyway since it's "his" car)... sadly here first the insurance repair and then you can decide to pay for yourself.. you can't simply fix the damage and ask them to pay afterward :(
