Ok, my PC is slowly grinding to a hault. I am in a fairly fortunate position of having a mate who works in the industry and has offered to build me a PC at cost price in return for some advertising amungst some law firms.

He is going to base it on the above processor:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Intel_Pentium_4_Dual_Core.html

Obviously he knows a lot more than me, and he tried to explain, but it went over my head. But why is this processor worth £700??

What really shocked me is the price that he gets them for.............

£140

Well, he will know for certain at the end of the month, but it won't be over £200!! Feck me what a mark up!

Again, can someone explain why this costs so much?

Get the AMD dual core

Not quite what I asked and you will have to explain why the AMD is better.

Cheers for the link 5vz-fe.

:P Take it you like Intel thamar. We shall see on the price, at the end of the day I will know what I paid for and what went into it. We are not talking from a shop. This is a company that builds and mainitains systems for large multinational compaines. Whether that makes a difference we shall see. I'll tell him to look into AMD

I'm with the bear on this one :), tell him you want an AMD chip. You will also be very surprised how HOT high frequency dual core Intels get :) so unless you're planning for a water cooling... it will a very loud and hot computer case you're going to get :).

It is also an utter nonsence about him buying that processor for that price :), he might be sponsoring your CPU, but it is impossible for an IT company, no matter how big, to get such prices. The only possible explanation would be that Intel ships them CPUs for free based on some kind of promotional deal, but that is still hard to believe.

no PC processor is worth 700 quid. that is just ridiculous... I can build a nice full system for that money.

Like other have mentioned you might want to consider AMD..

AMD makes great processors and because they own barely any portion of the market, they sell at cheap prices

I'll check on the price; see what is what. You may be right Overmind, he only said that was the price he would charge me. I know I said 'at cost' before, but that was my assumption. Seeing as the pc is almost an advert for his company it could be costing his company money.

I'll get to the bottom of it 8) I will have it built around x-mass so not too long to wait.

p.s he suggested AMD; it was me who said no  Looks like I should re-evaluate that one then!

No processor is WORTH that much I'd have to agree, but people do buy em. If no one bought them at that price they'd either not exist or be cheaper, but since people do, why not milk them for all they've got.

If you do manage to get the 840ee at that price, I'd like to buy a few

yeah me too, I'd auction off these on ebay with 200% profit and that company would get an even better prices from Intel, since they would be buying even more processors from them!

Does Windows take advantage or even use the dual core feature? Get a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ that can be OC'd to 4000+.

Chances are spyware's weighing your computer down. Maybe it's time to reformat and reinstall Windows.

There really aren't many programs in general that take advantage of dual core tech, and windows will probably have to wait till Vista to take advantage of it. But right now it helps where you can run Optimization or Scan Checks and it'll won't have any affect on any other applications you open.
