View Full Version : MY04 Subaru WRX (Opinions needed....)

Well here is my "new" baby....a Red MY04 Subaru WRX. :D
It has only 16,000kms (10,000 miles) on the clock, so its basically brand new but with a lower price tag. :D
I bought it last week and picked it up this evening, so only some pics in the dark for now. I will do a proper shoot with the car at some stage.
I have covered 20km so far, and enjoyed every second of it! Once you get this thing above about 3000rpm it just takes off  , obviously not as fast as some of the cars I've been in but for everyday use its enough for me.
Its been a few years since I drove a manual car, so need to get used to it all again - shouldn't take long though. :D
Start off with the custom shot:

Here are a few pics.....had a problem with linking the high-res from my site so these will have to do. :bah:

Really nice looking scooby you got there Dingo. Looks fantastic in red, very unusual color on wrx:s over here. Congrats man!

Thanks for the comments.
I picked red for exactly the reason mentioned - its RARE! I would also have liked a black one, but they are really hard to find and then keep in good condition.
BTW, the wheels look gold in those pics - but they aren't.
Any mods planned? I'd go for better suspensions and the gold OZ Prodrive wheels (perfect for the Subaru) on 17in :P ... or even 18in!!
Its going in for a window tint next week (part of the purchase), and then I will lower it at some stage.
Wheels and performance mods will have to wait a bit.....need more $$$.
Brillant color! And nice night shots! I am sure you will have plenty of fun with it!

Nice ride Dingo, Glad to see its what you expected. As long as it puts a smile on your face everytime you hit that right foot. 8)
Also, if your after wheels/suspension, give us a buzz on MSN, ive been doing heaps of research for my baby, we share the same PCD, but different offset, but found heaps of quality stuff at very cheap prices.

By the way, what happened to the Elise? Or what didn't happen, in this case. :P

Congratulation, You will have lots of fun with this one. The color is great too. Enjoy it :D
Nice car.... i love the colour.
Not too fast, but i suppose tha there is massive potential for upgrades on brakes, suspension etc... when you are ready for them :D
Can you get the PPP - Prodrive performance pack - down under? That might be a possible upgrade 8)
Seems this model - the "old" WRX is going cheap over here. Searching our car supermarkets, you can get one brand new, del. miles for £5k off list price so it works out ~ £16k
Have fun, and i look forward to more pics
:D congrats man!! is an STI ver?
hehehe anyway.. i'm sure you'll have tons of fun with it ;)

5.7sec to 100kmh - fast enough. :D

Thanks for the info, I haven't looked into it yet, but gis was also telling me about it. :D
:D congrats man!! is an STI ver?
No, just a standard WRX. The STi would have been even more expensive to buy, and the insurance on them (for a 23yo) is crazy.
 insurance here for any car if your under 25 is damn crazy.. WRX or STI would be one big kick to balls.. and anyway if you looking to tune it WRX is far better then the STI.. with the money you save you can get it much better then the STI..
Well as expected mate its dam sexy,if im honest a lot better than i expeted in red as i dont see many, but i like it a lot and you made a good choice which im glad you actually decided to make :P

i love the new car Dingo!!!
red is a delicious color without a doubt :-D and goes great with the gold rims (thats definately not the standard size/style for our WRX)
after driving quite a few of them, i know i love them; and 100% sure you love yours! it just begs to stay above 3500 with no complaints at all :-D
its great to see a 'non blue' WRX here; sure WR Blue looks nice, but i wouldn't buy it (black for me  )
good work mate

The wheels are standard, and not gold either - just that dark grey colour.
I just got back from a 30min blast down some deserted roads - oh what fun!!!! :D I have a feeling the fuel economy is going to shock me when I calculate it - put $55 of 98 Premium (42L) in today so lets see how long that lasts. :P

nice choice! I'm sure you'll have much fun with this car
about the color, personally I'm not convinced of the red, but for sure it's rare.
My first car was a Subary Legacy Station wagon (also in red , maybe a little darker red), and I drove it till the car was 13 years old (had a small crash on a iced road in the city)... one of the best cars one can have in the mountains :D , with only 100hp I passed everybody on the mountain-pass road in winter, the car was very nice on snow...memories....

Congrats a lot, dude!!
I don't know why but I'm exited for you having a new car. Maybe cause I only just found out about it. It really looks good in red and it's damn rare in that colour. You sure will have a lot of fun with it!!
You really need the following mods :
complete open exhaust to experience the boxer sound will every nerve in your body
a decent BOV to propagate more back fires when lifting off (at leasts if your engine uses a MAF sensor)
STi rear spoiler, just for the looks
As for the night shots, they are great. But the last pic of the rev counter is just superb, definitely wallpaper stuff and worth photo of the month!
dingo
10-22-2005, 07:36 PM
The mods will have to wait for awhile, for two reasons:
1. I want to enjoy the car as it is at the moment, the noise from inside is pretty nice once the turbo spools up .
2. $$$$$
But they will happen eventually. :D
Thanks for the compliments on the pics.

I had the windows tinted on Friday, just went out then and took some quick pics of the result.
It looks much more "sinister" like this, and with summer approaching it will definately help with keeping it cooler inside. :D

After 3 months and ~5000kms it was time to spend some money on my baby!
The ride height was really bothering my, especially from side-on it looked like a Landcruiser or something. :bah:
So I just had some King Springs (Low) installed, which dropped it by 30mm all round.....I love it, the ride is still perfectly acceptable but it definately looks more aggressive. :)
Next on the list is a Short Shift kit and/or an exhaust. :D
Here are some before/after shots to see the difference:

I've only driven it back from the workshop to home, which is busy main roads with 60kmh limit so I haven't tested it properly yet. However it gives a lower centre of mass which should help in the corners I think, with reduced body roll etc.
The car isn't being tracked yet so the impact on the street will be minimal at this stage, so I guess you could say its mainly cosmetic for now. :D

It looks a lot better now, certainly in the sig!
No money for other shock absorbers as well? Technically spoken it's always better to do both (expect maybe for you wallet ;))
As for the next mod: go for the exhaust. It really enhances the boxer experience ;)

.....but if you wanted a real performance you should have bought an STI 8)
an STi would've cost me another ~$10K.....with that much money I can make this thing perform better than a standard STi.
Also, the insurance on an STi is even worse - and I don't like spending money on insurance at all. :)
No money for other shock absorbers as well? Technically spoken it's always better to do both (expect maybe for you wallet ;))
From what I've heard is that if you don't do both, mostly after a year you can replace your springs again because they're worn out...
I've done a bit of reading about this (and spoken to the place I got it done at) and it seems the general consensus is that low (~30mm) springs won't adversely affect the life of the standard shocks.
However if your using Super Low springs (~50mm) then yes it is advisable to change the shocks aswell to avoid wearing them out quicker.
I guess I'll find out...... :)
BTW the sig with the EVO is great.

Nice car and very nice starting mods. Awsome colour too. You should get some rear adjustable multi-link pieces so that you can fix your negative camber in the rear though. That might cause uneven wear on your tires. It would also be good to go with some aftermarket shocks to go with the lower ride height and increased spring rate (I would think). Maybe even pillowball camber plates for the front.

well this really ruined my day, a lack of concentration in the carpark at work and this is the result:

So it seems the next bunch of money spent on the car won't be for a performance mod, but rather getting it repaired. :bah:
The guys and girls at work had a field day with it - and they even decorated my car with L-plates (for learner drivers) while I was out for lunch.

Sorry for your pain dingo - but now you can start enjoying your car ;)
Unless your car is locked away in a museum, a daily driver is going to have little ding'o's (couldn't resist :P) and dents now and again - it's always the first one that hurts the most :P

True words that!
I was in a fit of apoplexy when some ass scraped the back of my car 3 years back. Now I am a lot cooler about it.
The other day when I was house hunting, the women of the house backed her SUV into my car. Fortunately only a little bit of paint was scraped off. But I took it more coolly this time. The woman's husband had that priceless look on his face " Oh no the bitch has done it again" :)
Sucks big time, but indeed you'll get used to it.. happens every now and then to everybody :D

looks good dingo. Hopefully the paint won't hinder the heat dissipation from the caliper.
on a side note, i dont mean to nitpick, but from a safety standpoint, you really ought to invest in a set of jack stands. Those wood blocks may look sturdy, but it may not take much to knock the car off of them. And i am sure i speak for alot of us when i say i'd ate to log on and see a thread about how your car fell on your leg during a brake job :|

Nah, I find it really hard to consider spending $2-3K (or more) on a set of wheels which don't help the performance in any way - although they do obviously look cool.
If I do it eventually (and I'm sure I will) they won't be gold though, something like this would be nice:

The best wheels to fit on your car would actually be the OZ Superturismo, IMO there hasn't been nicer wheels ever, and it fits the Impreza very well. Unfortunately, I could have it in grey, so I went for some others.

New muffler fitted today, couldn't hold off any longer - I need to hear my car! :D
I went for something subtle, as I didn't want it being too loud and also I hate those 6" tips you see on many WRX's.
Overall I am very happy with it, a nice boxer rumble when you accelerate but nice and smooth at highway speeds (i.e. no droning).
Here are two short vids:
http://www.ozcarsightings.com/WRX_driveby.WMV (3Mb)
http://www.ozcarsightings.com/revving.WMV (1.9Mb)
http://www.ozcarsightings.com/preview/exhaust1.jpg
http://www.ozcarsightings.com/preview/exhaust2.jpg
Now funny thing happened, I was driving around this empty carpark while my brother filmed, then the cops turn up. He asked "Whats the story boys?" so I just told him the situation, then he told me this is a carpark and not a racetrack.....seriously I was just doing slow drivebys, no faster than anyone else would in a carpark.
She asked what I intended to do with the video - "I think I'll watch it when I get home".....so it won't go on the internet?........"No, of course not!"
He seemed to accept it and then proceeded to ask what the exhaust cost and crap like that. Then the female cop butted in and said I'll get alot of attention from the cops - to which I replied "if I don't break the law I have nothing to worry about".......that brought a smile and off they went.

Well done! And good idea to go for a pretty tiny one! First off, you will still recognize your car when parken with other red WRX with big exhaust fitted ;) and well, it looks good :D

Yep, its a great way to go IMO.
My friend who dropped me off to pickup my car has a VW V5 Bora and he enquired about a system for his car. What he plans to get includes a tip that isn't even visible from the back, it faces down but sits behind the bumper.
I still like to see the exhaust but to each his own I guess....

The purpose of those "6 inch" exhaust is to minimize backpressure into the turbo system. A free flowing exhaust is a happy exhaust with propper tunning. Otherwise you will throw CEL's everywhere hehe and get boost creep, Im sure youre well aware of that though.

You wont minimise back pressure by going any larger than 3" diameter on a modded road car, (other than ridiculous power turbo cars 700+ bhp), and there are a hell of a lot of systems on the market that have 3" diameter tubing the entire way, including the perf in the scilencer and then weld a 6" diameter tail pipe on the end, which does precisely bugger all other than look stupid!
And a 'free flowing' exhaust on an otherwise standard turbo set up isnt always the best thing, as the boost on spool up will probably spike higher, and unless your ECU has WOT Lambda closed loop control, which i doubt, you get some nice lean burning!

save up and get the hotchkis competition setup...25.4 front and adjustable 25.4 rear with 150%, 175% and 200% stiffer than stock settings. If you want a cusco adjustable 22-24mm rear with endlinks I may be selling mine soon. I'm not sure if it will fit your car but its a good option if it does.
Those wheels are not my thing, but they look cool wit the black and the red. You still need something else though...I think its a front lip but I cant quite put my finger on what it is. looking good, why didnt you clear the whole headlight..looks kinda weird.

Looks nice - and definitely... different than the 90% of other Imprezas out there :D
But - I don't like the chrome lip around the wheel :? actually I don't like chrome at all...
Full black would have been better IMO, and would have suited the red Rex much better IMO... although I would have gone for some nice golden Speedline wheels in 18in size... from the very beggining :P
Anyway - the visual impact is quite good actually... and overall it doesn't look that bad afterall
I don't like you anymore....... :P
The thing is it isn't actually chrome, just a polished lip......can't stand chrome myself either. Its the same thing you see on many modified late model Lambos, basically I'm trying to make myself feel like I'm in a Lambo.

As I said in a previous post I want to get an adjustable rear swaybar and then Ferodo pads/DBA slotted rotors.
Cosmetically all I want now is STi splitters so I can fit a CF lip, and maybe a STi rear wing. :D
basically I'm trying to make myself feel like I'm in a Lambo.
LMAO! :D
What about putting a huge "raging bull" sticker in your bonet or something??
I could say goodbye to all the people I've met who own real Lambos, no more rides for me. :P

Well I bought a new custom made 3" full turbo back exhaust system today, free up some extra power!!!! I will also get the ECU remapped once its all fitted, just sitting in my lounge at the moment.
Hopefully it will be fitted this weekend so I'll post some pics of it on the car and a short video clip. :D
Now I will have the big exhaust tip I was teasing earlier, but in the end if I want to go faster I need it......performance is more important than looks in this case. ;)

I'm loving the sound of the new exhaust, much louder down low which is a nice thing....scaring the neighbours though. :P There is also a noticeable improvement performance wise, more responsive down low and also 3rd/4th seem "livelier" - haven't given it a proper "workout" yet though. :D

fantastic videos dingo.

Well I got the ECU retuned/remapped tonight to suit the new mods (exhaust and also a Samco silicone y-pipe), and generally make it more aggressive.
I'm now peaking at 16psi of boost (~1.1bar), and its all available by 3200rpm which is a big improvement over stock. You can feel boost coming on at around 2500rpm which is a good ~700rpm earlier than before. I haven't given it a proper test yet so I'll see how it goes tomorrow. I will run it like this for awhile to see how the car likes it and then if safe to do so push it a bit further. :D
Saturday I have another trackday (autokhana) day with all these improvements (last one I did was without exhaust/y-pipe/ECU) so it should be interesting. I'll get some in-car footage and post it up.

Dingo, your car has definately progressed nicely since the last time I was around here!
sounds good mate, cant wait for the trackday vids.are you going to get it on a dyno to see what power your pushing now? what are you expecting? 250-260hp?
dingo
08-04-2006, 06:24 AM
Thanks guys.
A few of us are planning a group dyno day so hopefully that will happen soon. The guy who tuned it thought around 270-280hp (about 230 stock) so I'd be happy with something in that range.
Getting a decent wheel alignment and some negative camber tomorrow aswell, should help out in the handling department.
Looking forward to the trackday now and try all this stuff out properly, forecast is for a bit of rain (honestly) so that should make things interesting.

Sorry no trackday vids, my camera fucked up somehow which meant they turned out like crap (over exposed for some reason). :?
Nice nice car you have Dingo - the 240kmh top-speed vid looks nice - I like the sound... but the road looks full of bumps for a proper top-speed run :?

Spent about 4hrs on the dyno tonight with "my tuner" to get everything right, very happy with the final result (more to go though).
A stock 2004 WRX makes about 176hp at the wheels, so this is nearly a 30% improvement.....or about 290hp at the flywheel.
http://www.ozcarsightings.com/temp/dyno_plot_jw.jpg
Pretty good result there mate, bet your pleased :D its good considering you spent less than $1000 on performance mods......right?
so whats next? keepin it as it is for a while?
dingo
08-31-2006, 12:06 PM
VERY pleased for the amount of $$$ I have put in, only the exhaust and y-pipe engine-wise.....bit over $1K gis.
I was talking with the guys tonight and they are slowly convincing me to get a new turbo (VF35) and STi injectors and easily net 280-290hp ATW (so another 25-30% gain)....we'll see.
lol im pretty sure it wont take much convincing,i say giv it a couple weeks before you decide "yea i want a bigger turbo" lol
congrats with the results so far dude, yet another great result for one of the nicest WRX's i seen :D
dingo
08-31-2006, 07:05 PM
Impressive numbers considering you've only modded it a bit (exhaust, ecu)... 290hp is STi territory! what's next?
A stock STi has 206kW (276hp) in Australia.
Next step will be an aftermarket filter/intake which allows me a retune with slightly more boost (currently 1.1bar/16psi), should be good enough to crack 300hp.
Then bigger brakes and "handling mods" would be a good idea I suppose....
dingo
09-19-2006, 01:02 AM
After getting some more power it was time for a visual improvement, I got myself the fog light covers and side splitters then to top it off a sexxxxxxxxxxxxy carbon fibre front lip (bloody expensive!!).
I love how it has toughened up the look at the front of the car, has a much better stance/presence now. :D The covers and splitters don't come in red (no red STi's in Oz) so I had to get them painted....so an extra cost unfortunately.
Before anyone mentions it, I am looking for a suitable spoiler....want something different.

Get a WRX, you won't regret it. I had a few other cars on my mind when buying and I'm so happy I went with this car.
With the current mods I get use about 11L/100km, which is about 22 MPG according to the online convertors. It is actually still very similar to stock, thanks to great work by my tuner.
