hey dude! your car looks awesome!!!
im still thinking wether to get a 2005 wrx or a 2004 leon,
i just have a question how many kms per galon are you getting with the current mods?
Get a WRX, you won't regret it. I had a few other cars on my mind when buying and I'm so happy I went with this car.
With the current mods I get use about 11L/100km, which is about 22 mpg according to the online convertors. It is actually still very similar to stock, thanks to great work by my tuner.
if you dont mind i have a few more question...
1. is that MPG normal driving or very conservative driving?
2. when you are hitting 100 km/h whats your RPM? (a lot of highway driving 100 km/h when i go to the coast)
i recently tested a MY03 impreza with greddy turbo-back, it was impressive but laggy but i definitely fell in love with the car, so im looking for a 05 with the best interior. i wount even think in a leon if i wouldnt know the things i know about imprezas, a guy was killed and his car was found later without wheels and interior, another guy got his 04 and got stolen 2 months later and finally my cousin who has his 2nd STI got the first stolen
so im really :?

1. That fuel consumption is my average weekly usage, which includes driving to work (freeway) and going out at night etc. If I go for a spirited drive on a Sunday morning then I might get 100km less out of a tank, but you have to accept that.
2. At 100kmh I sit on 3000rpm.
Yes they are laggy when stock but once you get into modifications you can reduce it considerably with the right tuning/mods. I hit full boost just after 3000rpm now, really doesn't bother me.....if there is lag then change down a gear. ;)
As for theft it isn't a problem here anymore. Not sure if US cars are the same but all Aussie WRX's (02 onwards I think) are fitted with a Brant Alarm which requires you entering a 4-digit PIN before the car will start. I haven't heard of anyone locally get their WRX/STi stolen.
Insurance may be an issue aswell, better get a quote before you buy. I am paying $AU 1200 a year in insurance which is actually reasonable considering I am 24yo and the agreed value of the car (with mods) is $AU 40K.

so you when spirited driving you get 100 km out of a tank or 100 km less on a tank ?
dingo
10-30-2006, 04:25 AM
100km LESS out of a tank....or about 20-25% worse fuel economy.
Thats pretty much full-on Touge style :P driving though.
corvette97
10-30-2006, 12:44 PM
oh i see, so i just have to find a good place to service the car and that would be it, and get a GPS alarm thats all. and wait till jan or feb cust i cant sell my car right know cus its a 2005... bastards! haha :D
thanxs on the info Dingo! :D
you have a turbo back or just cat back
all Aussie WRX's (02 onwards I think) are fitted with a Brant Alarm which requires you entering a 4-digit PIN before the car will start.
over here every car is fitted with it.. you can't get you car insured without it..
if not perfect as the most important thing is to have it fitted by someone you trust, cause he knows where the tracking device is..
100km LESS out of a tank....or about 20-25% worse fuel economy.
Thats pretty much full-on Touge style :P driving though.
I have to say, last car I had all i could do was full-on Touge style driving..  just couldn't bring myself to drive "normally" (got avg of 300-350km for 55L tank)

corvette97 - I have a full 3" Turbo-back Exhaust, bear in mind you should get an ECU retune (I have) after fitting one. ;)
corvette97
11-02-2006, 12:08 AM
well we dont have any custon tuning here in guatemala, not even a dyno and the only 2 easy options are UTEC or COBB AP, so i,ll go with Cobb acces port (500usd cheaper)
i just have to figure out if ill have any trouble since they only have maps for 91oct maps (i think), we get 93 95 and 98 oct, we'll see. do you think i might have problems if i fit only a turbo-back? i know that i wont get all the potential of a turbo back without tuning, but problems? let me know :D
so, whats next on your mod list? you should get a STI hood scoop... that and the stock WRX wing looks hot! and then some hids :D
dingo
11-02-2006, 01:09 AM
The general advice is to get a retune after fitting a TBE, not that I've heard of any major damage occuring when not doing it. It may run a little rich and be sluggish, up to you in the end. Have a little read of the US WRX forums as their advice will be more applicable to you.
My next mod? Bigger turbo and intercooler, fuel pump, injectors and a retune....next 4 weeks or so hopefully, just need to save a little more $$. :D I will fit an STi scoop eventually too to help get more air into the TMIC.
corvette97
11-02-2006, 11:00 AM
wow!! what turbo are you getting VF39??
dingo
11-02-2006, 11:43 AM
Nah a VF34 most likely, still trying to find one though. Hoping for about 400hp or so, should be fun! :D
ViperASR
11-02-2006, 12:34 PM
Hey Dingo, out of curiosity, if you are spending all this money on your WRX to make it go faster, why didn't you just start with an STI? They have the 3.0L motor and such, plus a better suspension set-up.
tuffguy
11-02-2006, 01:42 PM
US STi has a 2.5L.
The 2004 WRX only had a 2.0L.
the imprezas here have the 2.5 in the 06 models onwards
and im guessing he got a WRX because straight out an STI and insurance cost a lot more than a regular WRX,and to be honest i think he is as fast as an STI now and even with mods cost less than what an STI would have
tuffguy
11-02-2006, 02:13 PM
Turbo's gonna cost $1k, intercooler's gonna be $1k, it's gonna need wider rims/tires, suspension will need to be upgraded, stronger clutch, fuel pump, etc. If you consider how much money one would have to put into a $24k WRX to make it perform like a $30k STi, you might as well buy an STi.
And the warranty would be shot to hell. No dealership will honor any warranty claims.
That is, if he got it new. If he got it used, then it's a different story.
dingo
11-02-2006, 07:15 PM
gis is right - after these mods I'd blow away a stock STi (its close already as is with 320hp) and I still haven't spent the $AU 10K extra that you'd pay for an STi here.
A year ago when I was looking for a car I didn't have the money for an STi anyway, plus insurance is even worse. This way I get an individual WRX the way I want it rather than a stock STi I couldn't mod for awhile. ;) Plus I they didn't bring red STis into Australia, so factor in a paint job on top of the STi cost. :P
I don't need wider rims/tyres (have 18", 225 tyres currently) or a clutch at this stage. Suspension has already been tweaked too. I will be getting a turbo, bigger TMIC, fuel pump, decapped injectors and an ECU retune - I will get change from $AU 4500.
I bought it 2nd hand (a year old, 16,000kms), but my warranty is over soon anyway so I'm not too worried about voiding it.
The stock market is booming and my investments are paying off, might aswell spend them and have some fun! :D
yea i remmeber talkin to you about the price of the car and how much more an STI is.should be great once the other mods are done.400hp must be good fun :D
corvette97
11-02-2006, 09:01 PM
you're gonna have to upgrade to a STi tranny, as far as i know the wrx stock tranny is good for "only" 350-400 hp :D
btw today i went to the dealer and theres a 2004 wrx 11500 kms RED!!! 17k usd, but dont want to copy you h :) heheh guess i'll have to wait for a 2005 blue, black or white
dingo
11-03-2006, 07:30 PM
Yeah I don't think a gearbox upgrade will be needed at this stage, I have friends running similar setups with the standard 'box.......I guess I'll find out when it breaks. :D

rember to get a better brake system, maybe a used STI one???

Dingo: how good are wrx brakes? when i test drove one i felt they where strong... couldnt really tell, it was just a 10 km drive haha .
The brakes are great, for daily road driving there really is no need to change anything. The only problem is on trackdays where they will begin to fade and maybe could do with a little more performance.
First step is to put better pads in (Ferodo DS2500's for me) and you will notice an improvement already. After that some bigger slotted rotors (DBA4000 or 5000), new fluid and maybe braided lines will suffice....you really don't need much more.
I will see how the stock ones hold up with the new power at my next trackday, then make a decision from there. :D

A few complications.....
Pulled 282hp ATW (about 405hp at the flywheel) and 360Nm ATW (~500Nm) but some probs with the gate not opening properly in 2nd gear and boost cut issues.
Took it to the drags anyway for a quick run and managed a 13.3sec pass with slipping clutch aswell....should get high 12's with probs sorted.
At the workshop again today to weld internal gate and then more dyno tuning tonight, so hopefully tomorrow it'll be all up and running.
Pulls hard though when boost comes on!

Just spoke to my mechanic/tuner - the gate problem has been fixed and it now feels much stronger and holds boost better (1.4bar/20.5psi) before....dyno results should be interesting. :D
..Might sound a bit stupid, but what kinda hp is usually shown on the car spec sheets, at the wheels or the flywheel?
As brembo said car manufacturers quote at the flywheel as its a higher figure.
Thats why I mentioned my flywheel figures as otherwise alot of people would look at my post and think "282hp....is that all?" and not realise that is at all 4 wheels. ;)
ah good news that its sorted.bet your gonna find it hard to sleep tonite before picking her up tomorrow, lol and making some videos obviously, lol  :P

5 secs in....thats the wastegate screaming. Trust me, in person it sounds like most other modded WRX's - very tough from the outside IMO. Had a mate drive it past me a few times last night and I liked what I heard. :D

I think it looks really cool without, it seems like a more 'normal' car, other than the 'racy' car it looks like with the wing on it. And because of the huge power in it, it's just cool to let it look so normal IMO :D Let someone challenge you in front of the traffic lights, I promise you'll have a great laugh ;)
*edit: Or like TT said, put some other wing on it, I'd say a real big one, like the Evo has :D
*edit 2: I've found a pic of it, the WRX version:

Well I was already "challenged" on the way home from my mates place where I took it off.....some guys pulled up next to me (some crappy car) and started gesturing at me. I dropped it back to 3rd and left them behind, couldn't help it.
Not sure I want an STi wing on it, I am on the lookout for an S203 one though.

^ The S203 wing looks pretty cool too, but my choice would be the STi wing. Cool you left those guys behind, sure it'd be fun doing :D
*edit: Do you listen 'Snap - I've got the power' whilst driving? ;)
*edit 2: How about this wing?

It looks more stealthy w/o the wing assuming a red car can be called stealthy :)

I prefer the spoiler-less look or the spoiler from the STi Limited. But then again, I'm a little biased:

I actually like it without the wing, but if it was my car, I would leave the wing on.
surprisingly it looks pretty dam good, ive seen 2 imprezas here with no wings,a white one and a blue one, they didnt look good, but i think the colour of your car makes the wingless look good.
but if you have to get another spoiler, please get the S204 one.....please :D

I absolutely agree, normally I don't like the impreza without a wing but it suits it well in that colour :D
But on the end of the day its your car Dingo, you do what you like!
But I have to say the S204 looks so much cooler than the STI version!

IMO it looks better without the wing. Yet, with the colour and mods you have done a wing really suits the car. I like the Sti and S204 wings a lot better than the S203.

although my first option to get a wing would be a cheap ass STi replica...

The car has been modded - why bother being stealthy? You paid for it - enjoy it - stick the farging wing on and go kick some exotic arse.. :P
