Just read about this. Seems like Jeremy Clarkson decided to buy an SLK 55 AMG. In black.

 I forgot to buy the paper this morning, have to say i'm surprised, guess he hasn't still got the SL, havn't read through it yet  t

**EDIT** well quite logical there from Mr Clarkson, i'm glad he hasn't given up on the GT :D and to have the SLK55 AMG as an everyday car!! how cool is that :D

I think he got rid of the SL a while back? And he still doesn't like the fact that the GT continues to act up on him.

hmmm...

Well, I hope he will have as trouble-free a time with his SLK as I've had with mine :D

22,000km's on the clock after nearly a year of ownership, and I'm still smiling :D

Yeh but how many did he and the TG team manage to break between them?? Not much of an everyday car if part of it explodes every day :P

I was expecting this...he talked so warmly about the car and after selling the SL55 AMG I pressumed he would need a new every-day car. The way car companies rip customers off is shocking though. Just like with the Ferrari F430...the interior...it costs 320GBP to have the stitiching a different colour than the lever. WTF ?? It costs 320 pounds just for the person who does the sewing to pick up a different coloured thread?? Idiotic...

There were a few inconsistensies in what he said about the choice of color for the leather, etc...

You can, if you want, get any leather color with any exterior car color. There is no such thing as only being stuck with the red/black combo if you get a black car. That's bullsh1t and whoever the dealer was, got it wrong.

Great choise...

It's funny that alot of people slag MB for there customer service, in my experience they have been great!

Just last month i had to buy afew Vito vans and the sales cunsultant there was fantastic, helpfull and very easy to get along with, through in some color coated bumpers too...

But im sure MB will be extra nice to JC, he holds alot of sway...

BMW has hardly more problems than Mercedes. Mercedes quality reputations is hardly on the top either. Maybe he should buy a Lexus if he wants something reliable.

BTW SLK is a chickcar maybe JC is a transvestite.

well mechanically i havn't heard much bad, our own merc however had corrosion probs. But well it wouldn't inspire confidence to buy the car if you break the thing several times.

I've got the same feelings... I just think, that Jerremy took the wrong wheels... I can't even imagine him in his own SLK... it's too small for as such big guy as Jerremy is
anyway, why did he get rid of SL55///AMG? :( just because of that "everyday use car" GT? I wouldn't change it if it was mine for anything :D

MB has a lot of electronical problems, so does BMW. Im one of the mods over at M5board.com and no owner have had any engine blows up, just electronical problems with the SMG which make the car dont want to start.
Its well-known that the preproduction cars/presscars had some issuses but the cars delievered to owners havent had any engine blow-ups. However, electronical problems will always exist but that goes for many other carbrands as well.
I know guys with AMG, and noone is having a troublefree AMG.
So I dont think the realibilty issue is a reason for TC not buying a M5, besides its not certain he will buy a SLK55 either since he change his mind a lot and talk a lot

JC always has something bad to say about german cars.. and seems he comes to a conclusion that the BMW cars are great.. but they are "not cool" or "ugly" (along with some flaming about chris bangle  i'm sure he started that "Stop Chris Bangle Petition" ) and the all time fav.. "too german"

BTW SLK is a chickcar maybe JC is a transvestite. And you drive what :) ?

I can accept someone saying that about the old SLK, as it had very feminine lines. But some people seem to think that just because the new model is also called the SLK, it must follow suite. Just because it's the smaller (by only a few cm's) then the SL, it immediately becomes the chick car.

Anyway... most of the conversations and comments I've heard from people (in real life or on forums), seem to show that their opinion of the new SLK is that the car is definitely masculine. Some even talk about the nose as being an almost phallic object.

Meh, I'm still smiling all the time while driving my car, it's been a hoot in the summer with the top down, and simply great in the rain (which my old car was much less so). I also like the definitely "feminine" MX5. But do I care? Nope, I also have a blast driving that car because it's a real drivers car.

Just my two cents :)

I agree with you Shinri.. The new one isn't a chick car, especially the AMG. It's a top car... What i don't understand then is why there is two convertible cars, both w/ two seats, and same engine sizes, that only differentiate by a few centimeteres and a hundred thousand odd dollars.
What's the SL got on the SLK.. really.

Well, being a BMW fan, you will only concentrate on the 'problems'. Funny really as I know a lot of AMG owners who have zero problems and I too have an AMG and after 1 year of ownership, it's still going as string as ever.

One can just as well find forums and websites dedicated to BMW's having problems, because they too experience them.

A completely troublefree car or marque doesn't exist. With over 10,000 pieces per car, and increasingly complex electronics, this is expected. Possibly with increased awareness, the companies will pay more attention to the problems that exist, and improve their techniques in order to get rid of them. I think it's just a question of time. At least in MB's case, most of the problems seem to be related to electronics rather then engine (in which case the problem would be considered dangerous). The cars do start and drive, but the electronic aids are becoming so complex that I don't think even the manufacturers know how to fix them.

Im not saying BMW is troublefree either, Im just showing that Mercedes isnt that perfect that some people might think so dont give me that lame child excuse of me being a BMW fan. I know BMW isnt perfect either but feel free to show me where I said so. Its great that you have no problems with your Mb but that doesnt apply all Mb owner.

Shinri, dont take it personal when someone complain on a Mercedes.

BTW ausi TT and Z4 is a hairdressers car

The SLK is a much lighter car (by half a ton). A lot of this is due to them being 'simpler'. Less gadgets and electronics.

The SL for example has a roof structure which can be raised when the boot is opened. In the SLK, as a cost cutting effort, it stays fixed.

In the SL, you get full leather interior, in the SLK this is an option where most of the dash is replaced by a spongier rubbery material.

The SL also comes with the supercharged or turbo charged engines, while the SLK is just naturally aspirated (being lighter, it would kill the SL in performance if it had the same engine).

There's a lot of small things that differentiate the two. Go visit an MB dealer and take home the options booklets for each car (they should be free, they are over here). You'll quickly see that the SL comes with a lot of things one might not necessarily need.

Its like Im going to accuse you on some things casue you own a Mercedes but I guess this is a common behavior from a Mb owner.
Common behaviour from an MB owner? I'm sorry, but this sounds like you're trying to insult me, and I could very well say the same thing about BMW owners because they do exactly the same thing.

The two camps of owners have always fought between each other for their favorite marque. I honestly don't care because I think both marques make cars that derive passion from their owners. Electrical problems or not, I'd still rather drive an MB or BMW everyday, then any other car. I just have a preference for the MB styling, and I consider your comment rude and misinformed.

If you took my comment of "BMW fan" in the wrong light, then I excuse myself. But being a mod on the M5 forums, you can hardly be anything else ;)

No problem man. I saw your edit just now, and I also added an edit of my own. I assumed you were another feverent BMW fan because you're a mod on an M5 forum.

We get our fair share of BMW fanatics come on MB forums spoiling the fun for everyone else and giving a bad image to BMW owners (hey, one of my best friends is a BMW fan, I don't hate him for it ;) ). We also have our bad seeds in the MB community (and funnily enough, it's usually the teen age kids that cause the biggest problem, going on about cars as if they really owned them).

But yeah, I know very well that MB has problems, but there's a lot of non-owners who receive misinformation relating to these problems. Most problems at the moment relating to MB's is down in the simple electronics department. And SRS light that lights up, or the radio which stops working. It's rarely anything catastrophic such as the engine blowing up or the tranny falling to the floor in a heap of pieces.

In any case, a problem is always a cause of annoyance. I just try to inform those who think that the problems with MB's are a LOT worse then they truly are.

The BIGGEST problem with MB is their incompetent dealer network. We get a lot of owners asking us about problems with wind noise coming from the window. And problems like this are easy to fix, yet dealers seem to f'k up really badly, and some of them just don't care! I think this is just not fair on the owners. Luckily for myself, the dealer I bought from IS competent and friendly. Something which I don't see happening in some other countries where they're just snobby and sometimes down right rude.

I'm quite a convertible freak, so I like to drive anything open top. Audi TT, Z4, Miata...

I'll take them all and drive off grinning ear to ear :D

p.s. I just hope MB and BMW will get over their electronic problems and rise back to the top of the ladder like they used to be ;) I wonder which one will achieve this first, knowing MB has decided to lower the number of electronics in their car, and BMW has decided to increase theirs. Maybe BMW will have better luck with their systems. Who knows.

mrmojo77: I think car taxes are very high in Finland. This also causes many impressive cars to be completely out of reach for most people...

IMO, any car over 50,000chf is already in the impressive range, as it rules out most French and Japanese cars, leaving pretty much only german cars as the ones which cost over 50,000chf (of course, talking about europe here... american cars don't sell much over here, and they do occasionally make some that go for over 50k, as do of course 'some' French and Japanese ones as well).

But the SLK costs over 100,000chf (I paid 125k for mine) and this is beginning to be the territory of cars you don't see often on the streets, even in Switzerland...
