Went to the Nordschleife on Saterday the 17th September. Those Touristenfahrten are always nice to see although I'm big VLN-fan. There is rally called the Cannonball8000 (www.cannonball8000.com), it's somewhat the same as the Gumball rally, the whole pack visited the Nordschleife and lapped it a few times. The moment I saw them driving up to the "start and finish" point at the cafe called the Grünne Holle I knew it was time to settle myself somewhere around the track. The track opened at 13.30 a.m. The weather was quite nice, lots of sunny periods, this brings lots of nice cars on the track 8).
The first six pictures are of a "pisten club" which are made in morning, I geuss they hire the circuit for a few hours so that they don't have to deal with lots of traffic.
Enjoy the pics :!:

Some stunning pictures....thanks alot! :D
Why do you post them so small though? To appreciate them fully we need 1600x1200 or similar pictures - do you have them in this size? :)

Hi Dingo,
I will make it up to you mate, I'm going to post a good sized picture 8) But unfortunately I can't post them all this big due to lack of webspace.

Thanks for that.
If you resize the images and get them under 1MB each you can host them on www.imageshack.us - and post the thumbnails here.
Alternatively you can send them all to me and I'll host them for you - I have 300GB of space and 7.5GB transfers to utilise. :D

The picture quality is stunning, the cars very nice :) only thing missing is bigger res as dingo already stressed :D
BTW dingo, I doubt you really have 300 GB of space and 7.5 transfer :D would be kinda difficult to deal with it :D
BTW, never post high-res directly with img tags, either you have a thimb, either you post the link only, as stated in the rules.

Sorry for that, my bad. Didn't know that. Good you let know.
Stay tuned, next week (24th september) I will go to the VLN again ... woehoe
To be honest I expected more of some of the pictures. I made one major mistake, I used a monopod for some time during that shoot yesterday and it looks like it isn't any good using one in combination with a VR-system (lens with Vibration Reduction system) when you are taking panning shots. They look fine on the lcd-screen but unfortionately these screens are quite unreliable when it comes to checking exposure and sharpness of your pictures. Lots of pictures turned out a bit fuzzy, can't stand that and I hate it using the sharpning tool in PS. So, you will do alot better with taking panning shots handheld than using a monopod :bah: I will make it up next time 8)

That kid is gonna be lapping that circut later in his life or have serious mental issues from his young days... :P
Fantasic pictures.
If you are goign back, I would like to ask a favour.
Do you mind taking some pictures of the popular turns and spots - but with no cars present.
We can always use really nice hi-res pictures of the track a backgrounds for Photoshop contests and the like.
Maybe even some pictures of empty parking spots at the gate house.. ;)
Any way, back to the lovely pictures. :)

That would be a Mosler MT900, not a Saleen.
These transcontinental rallies are becoming more and more popular, hopefully I'll be able to shoot pics of good cars if they aever decide to take a route through Poland. Great pics, thx.

The pics are very damn good. It looks like you're using a serious telephoto lens. I assume you're using Nikon equipment (D70?) with a damn expensive Nikon lens (VR). I would appreciate it if you shared with us what equipment you're using. Thanks!

Hi Badmihai,
Indeed mate, I'm using a D70. The zoomlens that I use is the 70-200mm f/2.8 G VR, it's one of the best lenses Nikon has ever produced. The cost price of one of these isn't that expensive when you live in Canada, like you do :D 8) Here in Belgium it will set you back almost twice as much, due to our incredible taxes system :x That's why I ordered my in Holland, much cheaper there.
I thought about ordering one in Canada first, but because of the shipping costs and the extra taxes that I would have to pay when this lens has to go through customs it would have been more expensive than ordering one in Holland. Knowning that the transport costs are free and that it hasn't have to go through customs 8) because it stays in the EU.
If I'm not mistaking, this lens costs you 800-900 dollar. It is almost half the price than you will pay for it here in Europe :?
Cheers

Thanks, man! I'm looking at buying a D70s as we speak and also looking at a telephoto lens. The 70-200 mm VR one seems damn nice.
EDIT: I've actually used this lens when shooting for a friend's company. It was hooked up to a D1H at the time and I was shooting a marathon. I didn't get to use it much, as I found the kit lens more appropriate for the event.

BADMIHAI,
That's great new mate :) Just go for it you won't regret it. Seems to me you have already had some experience shooting with Nikon equipment.
The image quality you will get from the D70s is just great, it is by far the best shot for the buck. And about that 70-200mm f2.8 VR Lens; It's extremely good and worth every penny. Going digital with this lens means you will end up with 100-300mm, it will cover most the situations you will end up in. If you ever would come too short then a teleconverter is probably the most interesting option moneywise.
Good luck with it mate, looking a forward to your pictures
Cheers

I was at the ring this weekend as well !!!
If I would have known that, we could have met each other. Maybe something for next time ;)
As usual your pics are great. How was the new 70-200 lens?
Do you have some more pics? Perhaps some of Belgian registered cars? My friends and I did some laps on Saturday and Sunday and would really appreciate it if someone had some pics of it. Certainly one guy who was only able to do one lap this weekend (he had an accident on the ring :().
What car were you in, Wutputt? I was there from thursday afternoon until sunday morning in my Alfa. Maybe we saw each other but didn't realise.

I didn't take any photos of the track action as I was too busy driving :P .
I hope it wasn't one of your friends that crashed - there were several accidents I saw :( . The track conditions were very difficult. That rain shower at the far end of the track caught out a lot drivers on saturday afternoon. On one lap I passed five separate accidents between Steilstrecke and Brunnchen!

The lens has done more than its job :) , it was welded on the camera whole day long. It is great tool to take panning shots with and I'm addicted when it comes this type of sports photography.
I saw a few Belgian cars back there, but I was there on Saterday. I saw an Belgian A3, Leon and a mark 4 Golf.
I'm going to the ring next weekend on Saterday with a fellow photographer. But if you feel anxious to come over as well, you are always welcome.

In a Golf V GTI, BMW E46 Touring and Audi A3. I wasn't with my own car :) I think I've seen your Alfa at Brünnchen but I don't have any pics of it.
@ c0wb0y007: the Leon wasn't one of us, but the other ones could be. Here are a few pics of the cars of my friends. If you would have any of them on picture, that would be great.

Missing in these pics are a BMW E46 320 Touring M-pack and a VW Bora
As for this weekend: I've to help my brother moving, so I've sadly no time. Maybe we can get together at the ring another time.

No, I didn't shoot those. The thing is that I don't shoot slow moving cars :) I don't want to offend anyone here, but it's purely a photographic thing, slow moving objects don't make good panning shots. It doesn't has anything to do with the make or type of car. I will shoot such cars if I know the driver and when he/she is interested in photo. It's just a matter of drawing a line and you have to draw it somewhere, if I start shooting everything I end up with a full memory card in no time
BTW: I have been to the VLN-race today, together with a fellow photographer. I invited him over, it was just great. Have had a blast out there today, the weather was superb, cars were stunning and fast as hell. I have had the opportionity to "testshoot" Nikon's ultimate camera; the 12mpix D2X ...... That thing is just MINDBLOWING    When you are just to shoot with a D70, it's the same as being used driving a Golf II and stepping into an A8 W12 :P :P
Will post a few pics later on, I will drop a pm next time so if you are going as well I will focus myself on the Belgians on the track.
Cheers

Great you could test the D2X, I'm already looking forward to the pics you shot yesterday ;) As for the pics of last weekend. It's true, slow moving cars don't give those great panning shots with a lot of feel for speed. I also normally only take pics of the faster cars (but I make an expection for slow moving exclusive cars :D).

I totaly agree on that one :) I hope the pics will turn out good enough so I can post a few of them on the board. If everything goes well, I will receive them by post (cd) tomorrow. Hopefully I can post them on Thursday, Tuesday and Wednesday is a no-no due to classes.
But here is already a preview shot:
http://users.pandora.be/jokke1/Photography/B.Cars/VLN%2024-05-2005/Nr%20111%20Porsche%20MR%20Print%20lr.jpg
This Porsche is tuned and driven by Manthey Racing, as some of you might know, Manthey racing is specialized in Porsche Tuning and the company lays next to the Nurburgring's long straight Dottinger Hohe. It's an impressive ringtool.
I will try to post the rest of the images in a higher resolution. It depends on the quality of the pictures and the number of pictures I will end up with. I'm definitely going back to visit another VLN-race this year, but I can't say which one yet.
Cheers
