Naturally-Aspirated V-8 (90-degrees)
4-valves per cylinder
6208 ccm displacement
Max power: 510 hp (380kW)@ 6800 rpm
Max torque: 464lb-ft (630Nm) @ 5200 rpm
Redline: 7200 rpm

Very impressive figures. Nice to see a Merc engine that revs a little higher. Too bad it's lost some torque but as we se with the E60 M5 a car can be pretty fast without being a torqumonster.. 7G-Tronic?

It's about 20% more powerfull in its segment than its rivals, quite impressive indeed, but I will miss the rumble the SC engine make, but this should sound quite nice too.


It's also funny, that just as MB is starting with NA that BMW is turboiing :?

cool, thanks for the news, i have been waiting to see what the 63 power output would be. i am kinda confused with this engine. what was it developed for? is it replacing the supercharged 55, or maybe its just replacing the N/A 55? i dunno, i dont really see the point of this new engine. the supercharged 55 is a great powerplant and suits the heavy mercs well with all the torque it has. this engine seems peaky comparitively. maybe someone can explain.

I don't think BMW will do that to its M models, the moment they reached the peak in the V10, they'll just make a V12 :D

sounds like a modifed 4 valve variant of the 6.2 l SRT8 engine... with only 85 more ponies then the 2 valve version here...

The torque is disapointing, but that's what you get when you go NA. Both the fact that you have to rev up to 5200 rpm before you get max torque, and that it is "only" 630 Nm. They are good numbers, but nowhere near the performance they have had with superchargers.

I gues this is more suited for driving hard on a track than cruising. Is MB trying to change their image?

When is people going to learn that torque inst everything. Look at M5 E60 , faster than E55. I'm 100% sure that the new E63 is going to be faster than E55.

with the full load of torque, the tires would loose grip, and esp/tc would turn on the brakes to get tracktion back... so, i would say that so much torque is definately obtuse, and mostly unusable at low rpms... especially for an automatic gearbox

Actually Mercedes has lost some low rev torque in favour of some mid to high revs punch with this new engine. I was quite surprised when I noticed that. Maybe they just wanted to have a different engine character compared to their previous supercharged engines.

(it' of course not the real torque/power curve, but just a marketing version of it, which isn't that accurate)

So what you are saying is that a $50,000+ hand-built Mercedes Engine is a little more powerful than the mass produced $20,000 2-valve, push-rod Chebby LS7 -- ;)

i still dont really get this new 63 series from mercedes. seems like it would be a lot more trouble than its worth to produce an entire new engine that puts out about only 17 more hp and 52 less ft lbs of torque (at a higher rpm none the less) than the engine than its replacing. especially from a company that has had issues about build quality.

i didnt see any need to replace the supercharged 5.4L unit. :bah: couldnt they have just tweaked the 5.4L to produce an extra 17hp? am i missing something here?

Chmon Speedkiller you of all people should know that the 63 engine will be turbocharged in a later varient. 8) Unless they scrapped that idea, im still hearing rumors of turbo 6.3 V8.

They finally fixed the 7G tranny so that the engine wont rip it apart. Thats awesome. :twisted:

The engine is clearly underated, as most Merc AMG engines are. Even the 600 engine is severly underrated. Dont worry this car will be faster than the Current E55.

hmmm, maybe they wanted to differentiate the AMG modles more from the 600 series. making them with higher more revving sporting engines rather than low revving torque monsters made for cruising. and maybe they are going to up the displacement on the 63 series and replace the current 65 AMGs with 69 AMG's?

I think this new AMG engine is welcome addition/replace to the current
engines with a bit more power but with much more sport character that
i'm sure that it has a lot room for improvement in the future.
