New STi and Skyline GT-R Due Soon
An insider's estimation of the next generation
November 2004
The illustration above, purloined by our man in Japan, is an insider's estimation of what the next Impreza WRX STi will look like. Although many of the characteristic features of the current car are carried over—hood scoop, aggressive fender flares, enormous wing—the rest of the car shares some styling elements with Subaru's new corporate face, exemplified by the B9 Scrambler concept car designed by Andreas Zapatinas and displayed on a pedestal at the 2003 Tokyo show. The front-end styling of the concept is shown here and is reportedly the face of future Subarus. A new Impreza WRX STi should hit Japanese roads in 2007 and ours soon after.
The illustration below depicts the upcoming Nissan Skyline GT-R. The GT-R version of the Skyline has always been a special high-performance offering in Nissan's lineup, and this one will continue that tradition. The GT-R probably has the record for the number of car-mag stories about a vehicle that has never been available in the U.S., and it remains high on our wish list.
Built on a new platform that is not shared with the standard-model Skyline, or Infiniti G35 coupe, as it's known stateside, it will likely make the GT-R far more expensive than run-of-the-mill G35 coupes.
There are conflicting reports out of Japan regarding the powerplant. One camp believes the GT-R will be powered by a Cosworth-developed twin-turbo version of the current 3.5-liter V-6, offering at least 450 horsepower. Others believe a new twin-turbo 3.2-liter V-6 will get the call.
To make sure the GT-R has supercar handling, chassis engineers from Lotus were selected to develop its steering, suspension, and drivetrain. Could this special Skyline so long denied to U.S. enthusiasts finally come to the States? "G35 GT-R" has a certain ring to it, but it's up to Nissan or Infiniti's product planners to decide whether it will come to our shores.

The WRX is cool looking, the GT-R is butt ugly, just like the last concept they showed to the US back in 2002

not being sarcastic at all. everytime i see a stupid remark "i don't like it just because its japanese" it always seem to originate from american members. so whats the point selling it there?
look at the JGTC thread and you know what i mean
Car and Driver is pretty late...besided i wouldn't use the word soon...on the other hand the new GT-R is supposed to be more powerful than we all expect as Carlos Ghosn said he wanted it to be on the cutting-edge.

No one has said that in America in a long long time, it's usaly the other way around now, people say " I will never buy another American car, its japanese or german for me" They/We have been waiting for the Skyline since the R-32, longer for the die hard fans.

Fuck off with a statement like that. If you are looking for people who have a bias about cars, look at England.

You're not entirely right. Top Gear is biased towards English-built cars, but not all English agree to that statement.
If you think people here would prefer a diesel S-type Jag to a diesel 5-series or a diesel E-class, then you're mistaken. :)

about the statement on selling the skyline here, their choice has NOTHING to do with how people want the skyline etc etc here in america, or how deservind we are of a car with only 450hp. Their decision is based off of wheather or not it will sell within the american market (what segement can they sell it in etc) if the numbers dont add up, there is no g35 gtr here or whatever.
bottom line g35 is a giant pos, and we probablly wont see the skyline, americans dont want a coupe for some reason (retards with too many children)
and sense the late 90's, jags were as much british as a toyota camry is japaneese.

Is that GT-R PS?....I think it looks fantastic!!...a good go-between the 2001 concept and the more usable G35!..gr8 looking car. As for the STI... ....wot an improvment over the last few years of fluffly STI..that looks mean

i prefer the looks of the current/previous versions than those concept shots. I also prefer the current Z to that concept. I think that new GT-R is priced around 70K USD (maybe i'm making that up), but either way, I prefer the looks of the Z, and with the money you save buying a Z instead of that concept you could go w/ the greddy twin turbos and tune the whole engine for less than the difference and push more than the 450bhp they claim in that article.

Got the new (February) Sport Compact Car issue, and it has some new photos of the GT-R :D
here ya go

to me it looks just like a tuned version of the G35, but I still think it looks a lot better than some of the concepts they're putting out. They're saying it may (or are hoping it will) have a twin turbo V6 putting out around 450bhp... oh god I hope so!
I wouldn't waste my time evaluating appearance of a test mule...The final product, that is set to hit the streets in 3 years' time, might look remarkably different.

Yeah I suppose it is pretty pointless, but its fun to theorize anyway. There probably is a very good chance that they'll be changing the skin of the skyline, but its interesting to see that its still been built up from that chassis.

Hopefully they will make a of changes to the body. After all, if the body of the car is similar to the current models, why not just buy the current one, then do the necessary tuning yourself? be fun to go through the process, you would learn more, and u might save some money doing it too...

You've got a point ,however, it has its downside - the warranty - so if it had to be my daily driver I'd definitely wait for the new stock version.

your just saying that because they sell them in australia, were you are conveniently located. i lust for an R34, hell id be content with just the engine!
:EDIT: there is a cult following here in ignorant america for the skyline (r32-34) hell, even my seven year old brother loves the skyline. he has an imported japanese poster of it on his wall. we have been waiting for this car for a LONG time, and i bet they will be sold out within 3 months of their introduction in america.

I really have a feeling that the production version of the GT-R will look pretty similar to the pictures we see here...And especially the the one on the front cover of "Sport Compact Car"...what im basing this on is this...
that car obviously has an aerodynamic package, rear wing, front bar (spilters probably) now why would Nissan go out of their way to develop all this for a car that which won't be the GT-R, and has nothing to do with future models...i may be wrong, but i can't help but think the production model will look similar...body wise...
Or maybe their making a sport version of the G35... :P

Yeah, that might be a good idea, esp if it's the daily driver. If you wanted to save even more money though, you could buy a used "current" one (which might not come with a warrenty anyway), and then rebuild and tune the engine - it would probably improve the used engine anyway, plus you'd get all the aformentioned benefits.

There already is a Sports package so I dont see this happening. I think that they will change the design a little maybe not too much. However, I suppose that they will later shift to make the one in the second pic I posted before be the final new GT-R.

Good point. But to counterpoint, this car isn't coming out for another 2 years (supposedly) so they may have just left on the paneling of the G35 and stuck on some aero bits they already have to deter prying eyes while they were working out the kinks in their drivetrain and suspension or w/e.
I think it probably will end up looking fairly similar to this, but you can't discout the other possibilities.

I do hope that the GT-R gets a more butch body that the current G35 bodywork. Even though I like the G35's styling, I don't think it quite suits the next gen skyline.
Oh yeah, and I really hope they change that spoiler. Ugh

@ findleybeast: accourding to the article, this will be available "early 2006 as a 2007 model".
It must be taken in consideration that this GT-R will be called Infiniti GT-R not Skyline GT-R or R-35 36 bla bla, so that leaves space for another GT-R to arrive as the Skyline.
Maybe this GT-R isnt a successor for the current R-34, but just an addition to the Infiniti brand. As if the M wasnt enough New stuff already.
Judging by the figures, this car will kik arse.
P.S. Hope they change the front bumper for the better as that one is not good looking. Same with the spoiler, and for gods sake put some memory seats there already!

@ FPVPSI - lol thanks. And this car kicking ass is what we're all hoping for
@ DeMoN - The G35 is called the Skyline in Japan though, so might it be called the Skyline GT-R there at the very least? Or is the Nissan/Infiniti GT-R label set in stone?
Even if they keep the overall appearance of the G35, I'm just hoping they'll do something to give it a more muscular appearance - more than just giving it a new front bumper and splitter and throwing on a big spoiler and calling it a day. Of course I'm sure they'll at least make those fully functional, but a couple other tweaks and styling cues like the more pronounced wheel arches hinted at in the previous concepts would be very welcome.
BTW has anyone heard any news about the drivetrain? Of course it will be AWD, but any specifics? It seems that an evolved version of the Super HICAS all wheel steering used in the old skyline would be unlikely, given the platform, but hopefully the rest of the system will be up to par with the GT-R legacy?

Why do they insist on making it uglyer and uglyer? The cureent body with some modifications would do fine, not just change the Infiniti around a lil.

People, the G35 Skyline pics are not at all what its going to look like. They put the G35 body on the Skyline engine and chassis, which is shared with the G35, to work on some aero parts and to test the combination. It'll look nothing like the G35 since it'll obviously have a wider stance, hence the wide body parts on the car.
