I don't know. But they have to be just some journalists opinion, they can't compare times.
Well, not necessarily. They could have used some parameters which could help to evaluate the drivers level in numbers as far as possible. It's obvious numbers are not deffinitive but they can help you.
For example, they could have investigated how many times each of these pilots were 10 % faster than his period rivals' lap, or how many times they beat a lap record, how many times they did the fastest lap,...etc

For me the fastest driver is the one with more poles per GP... because in a pole position... it's just you, the car, and your best lap out of 12... I'm not refering to the current pole position sistem, I mean the old one, with 12 laps... So it's obvious that for me... the fastest ever is Senna.
I could be agree if we put some kind of parameter that could reduce the differences of technology of each epoch as much as possible. In this way you could put more or less drivers from different periods at "the same level", but you must ponder poles.
dropot2
11-25-2004, 10:34 AM
I'm not talking about "total poles"... I mean poles per race, so if you had 10 poles out of 15, you're fast... that's the same for all the different F1 eras... wether if they had 10 races every season or 18.
I see...we are saying the same thing...then...why are we discussing? LOL!!

Antonio Ascari was Alberto's father not brother. They both shared the same fate - died at the age of 36 at the wheel of a race car. Antonio drove the Alfa P3.
J M Fangio was a great driver and a smart driver. Keep in mind that he was on average 20 years older than his teammates. - he was rarely dominated by his teammates - an illustrious list including the Two Fs - Farina and Fagioli, Moss, .... others. His tigrish drive in the 1957 Nurburgring was a awesome feat where he broke the lap record several times to snatch victory over the two Ferraris of Hawthorn and Collins. That was a display of speed and courage at the finest level. Fangio had the sense to pick the right horse as you pointed out - but I see it as a virtue.
But according to a reliable source in those days - Denis Jenkinson - the fastest driver in the 50s was Alberto Ascari.
Interesting list Mrmojo77 ... I love seeing George Boillot in the list - a ferocious Peugeot pilot if there ever was and of course the stars of the 30s - Rosemayer, Nuvolari (my alltime fave).
I can see positive arguments for all these drivers on the list - its a fair listing methinks.
Some drivers I can add to the list from a pure speed perspective:
- Ronnie Peterson (1970s)
- Rudi Caracciola (1920s and 30s)
- Guy Moll (1930s)
- Jackie Ickx (1960s)
- Stefan Bellof (1980s)

Hey guys since racing was so different along all the years and u cant compare year to year, why dont we do best driver of like lets say around 1990 - present, or 1995 - present like around the last decade.
If it was me id pick:
1. M Schumacher
2. id have to pick Senna second to Michael just for the fact i didnt follow F1 when he was alive so i didnt actually get to see him perform from race - race weekend - weekend.
Ahh screw the list its too hard, i think the best drivers of the last 10-15 years are obviosuly Prost,Senna and Schumi but other then that id have to say,
SPECIAL DRIVERS:
- Fisichella - (beat all his teammates including Ralf Schuey, Button, Sato and Wurz who many people regard as really good, they say talent comes out at Moncao and hes one of the best at Monaco maybe just as good/better then M. Schumi himself, I have heard articles saying he has even more natural talent then Schumi but just Schumi knows how to extract it out better.
- Raikonnin - he beat his highly regarded teammate Nick Heidfeild in first year and in his first year was right with david, now hes absolutely destroying the guy.
- Alonso - from his first days in a Minardi you could tell he was special he seems like he can just get 99 percent performance out of the car instead like most other "good" drivers getting 96% - 98% (no noone can get absolutely 100 percent out of a car it is physically impossible unless you are God).
REALLY GOOD (but not in that really special way good like the above):
- D Hill won championship in 96, raced very well with Schumi in 95 and almost won in 94 although Schumi was dq'd from like 15 races that season lol.
- Villneuve - (maybe just maybe) but theres someone in my head tellin me he shouldnt be on this list, but i gotta put him here, he did win the championship in 97 although he had easily the best car and coulthard wasnt as good back then, but in 96 pole first race and kept Hill honest so he has to be on this list.
- Trulli - he can be blazingly fast but not consistent enough, although for first half of this year kept Alonso honest.
- Ralf - not consistent enough either but can be really fast if everything is absolutely perfect.
- Hakkinen - many people think that hes sooo sooo good, i think hes really good but not sooo sooo good. Yes in 98 and 99 he was awesome but thats only 2 years where he had easily the best car, what about in 2000 lets face it The Maclaren in general was better then the Ferrari in that year too (not all the time, but in general) and he maybe should have done a little better over the course of the year he was gettin a lot of pressure from Coulthard and even more in 01.
- Barrichello - at first he would of been in the "GOOD SOLID" list, but from 02 - present he really stepped up his game i think, (or maybe Michael stepped down? lol i doubt it) so hes in this list easily now.
- Heidfield - but its not actually proven yet that he deserves to be on this list as we need to see more of what he can do.
- Massa - same with him, not proven he deserves to be here but can be fast, might need to work more on race pace then over 1 lap, maybe in the future has the chance to go to "SPECIAL DRIVERS" list, not sure yet though.
GOOD SOLID DRIVERS
- Alesi - yes he was a fighter and super exciting to watch and everyone loved him, but he was no faster (although not slower either) then Berger at Ferrari, despite having that very good start to his career.
- Coulthard - I though maybe he could of been in the "REALLY GOOD" list but after getting annihalted in 2004 and 2003 by Raikonen hes not, he had part of 2000 and 2001 good but he was on and off. and 2002 looked good but thats jus cause it was only raikonnen's 2nd year.
- Berger - should probably be on this list too although i didnt really watch him but from what i do know him and Alesi were really matched when they were together at Ferrari.
- Frentzen - at first he should be in "REALLY GOOD" drivers but in 2000 Trulli beat him in general over the season and should of beaten Heidfield in 2003 due to way more experience but they were equal instead.
- Irvine - maybe could be on this list not sure though
and probably other drivers too but i cant remember and dont feel like trying to rememebr them all.
Then theres Montoya and Webber and Button, right now i would have to put them in the middle between "SPECIAL DRIVERS" and "REALLY GOOD" because they seem like they might be able to be in "SPECIAL DRIVERS" Montoya being better then Ralfy most of the times even though he had way less experience, and Webber destroying Pizzonia and doing some very good quali and races in his peice of junk Jaguar, and Button doing really good (although Sato was close especially nearer the end of the season) but i need more proof to actual select which list they go too.
We will find the proof this year for Montoya since hes with Raikonen, and same with Fisi and Alonso (many rumours still goin on about Alonso treatmeant and favoritism to keep his confidence up cause he is the future and the team is built around him, i dont believe them but i dont not believe them i just dont know). And it would of been perfect if Button went with Webber to really see how good they are.
Oh ya and Mansell he was like Alesi but probably with more speed, i think he would have to be with "SPECIAL DRIVERS" but im not sure havent seen enough of him.
lol p.s. I hope many people reply and read this as this took me a lot of time to write lol, i wonder if i should just start a new thread "Best drivers of last 10 - 15 Years"??
By the way the drivers in each category are in no order, but random.

^^^^ Schumacher is also one of the best in the wet. Just as good as Senna some times.
J M Fangio wasn't on the limit fast, he would be proud to say that he could win a race at a speed only needed to win.

i have to say in the wet Senna Schumi and Fisi, maybe Barrichello. Barrichello is more good when its like some rain, then it dries a lil like on and off, but for an actual wet track i think Schumi Senna and Fisi. I know some might doubt Fisi, but look at what he did in the Jordan in 03, yes it was a freak race but if you see the times he was doin with that car you would understand. And in 2000 in Canada in terrible rain he came in 3rd ahead of Hakkinen and behind only the 2 Ferraris in a Benetton! For more proof look at Suzuka this year in practice yes it was only pracitce but Fisi was so smooth and was second only to schuey and he was close in both sessions. In Brazil 01 he finished 6th starting from 18th in the rain with the Benetton which at the time was the second worst car maybe even as bad as the Minardi. 7th in his peice of shit Jordan at Indy in 03 when it rained. In 99 Nurbergring when he crashed out of the lead on a wet/damp track i though he messed up but i just found out a few months ago that it was the car that broke.

Well all these sorta stats are good for ppl who are bored or want to put the point across that X Driver isnt the best etc. When you look at history its how many Wins and titles that count Schumie is on top and until someone beats his achivements he is My No1.

ya of course Schuey is on top, but when determining whos better etc etc u dont look at paper and read a bunch of numbers u gotta look at individual performances relative to the circumstances which are at hand

HI everyone,
IMHO- Ayrton Senna and Gilles Villeneuve with Ronnie Peterson were 3 of the fastest drivers in F1. Their pace and also their bravery were extraordinary. In addition Jackie Stewart (Ring-68), Stefan Bellof (i wish he had lived!), keke Rosberg, (silverstone-i think 86) Alan Jones and sometimes Nigel Mansell were extremely fast. These drivers had an element of pure and raw speed despite their status in the championship or the condition of their car.
From the new guard i reckon that Kimi is probably the fastest of them all, with Alonso and Montoya following. Recently i think that Sir Stirling Moss referred to Kimi as the only pure racer in F1 today. I totally agree!
Michael is extremely fast when conditions and team strategy permit him to do so, also he is fantastic with a clear track in front of him- but he is not that fast in the wet (Senna was and still is the undisputed MASTER), or when he has to deal with slower drivers.
I am sure i forgot a lot F1 drivers and i did not referred at all to the old school were GIANTS likle Roseymeyer-Carraciola-Nuvolari-Fangio-Moss and others risked their lives in every race!
Thank you
elio

hey im sorry but what you said about Michael being only fast when conditions permit him etc and not being that fast in the wet i have to completely disagree. Actually i think those are some of his best strengths.
Look at how competetivie Michael has been in every year in F1. Lets face it besides 01-04 he has only ever had the best car in 95. On average i think the Mclaren was better in 2000. Look at races in the last couple of years were Ferrari didnt have the best car for the weekend, Michael was still up there almost everytime. Like look at France 03 look where he was compared to his teammate etc etc. In 94 he would of destroyed hill if it wasnt for all the dq's his tam had and he didnt even have the best car. Look at 97 and 98 how colse he came to winning the WDC with his Ferrari that wasnt even close to the Williams and Mclaren. I woul do fmost likely won in 99, and his Ferrari was miled off Mclaren also. He won 3 races in the wet in 96 which was soooo bad that here really it was a dog. Spa Suzuka and Monaco are the true DRIVERS circuits today and Schumi always performs best there.
And in the wet Schumi is at his absolute best. To say Schumi is not too good in the wet, well thats such a horrid and untrue comment that I wouldnt even know where to start! To say that, either you must not follow F1 too much or I must of misunderstood the comment.

HI-
Dons5,
i do not want to make this thread a comparison between Schumi and everyone else!
First and foremost you refer the drivers that he faced- and the only names you mention are Hill (which is probably one of the worst drivers in F1 ever)-
Secondly i did not said that Schumi is not fast in the wet- i said that he is not as fast as Senna was in the wet-
The problem is that i do not know if you agree with the other drivers that i mentioned- all this praise for Schumi is pathetic (this comment is not for you dons5)- since Schumi in the last 4-5 years had the best or the second best car- and most importanly had no real opponents to face- (not in the caliber of those Senna had to face)....
Schumi is one of the best drivers of all time (top 10)-and his car control is out there, while his ability in the wet is excellent but not great as Senna's wet control-
I think that there were other drivers that were better than Schumi- and i trully believe that despite his championships and records- Gilles was and will be IMHO a much greater driver than Schumi......and more importantly a true sportsman- something than schumi never was....
I hope you understand my point of view- no offence taken-
Thank you
Elio

of course no offence taken, hey this is a car forum, everyone has their own views and i fully respect yours. You know myabe schumi isnt as good as Senna in the wet but in my view if hes not as good as Senna, then hes second only to Senna. Have you ever seen the Spain 96 race? He tottally obliterated everyone in his Ferrari which was a complete dog that season. That wasnt one lucky race though, it happens just about everytime.

all such comparisons are useless, besides can someone who ranked these drivers explain and prove why clark is no. 3 and senna is no. 6 and why is prost not in the top ten; but it makes for an interesting forum ...
