Hey guys.. This is my 1991 Mini Cooper. Mostly every body knows that I am crazy about mini.. I always liked this car a lot but one thing about it that I don't like is that their is not that much power in it.. So for the past few months I started throwing the idea around of replacing the engine with a much powerful one and still be very reliable and can be driven daily. The idea of a 1275 mini engine came but was quickly dismissed.

Then came a bike engine idea.. A suzuki Hayabusa engine but reliability was an issue and read alot of problems about the chain brakes and stuff like that.. Then V-TEC came along. Well I loved V-Tec engine powerful reliable and you can get the spare parts very easily and also cheap. But the only negative thing from a V-TEC engine is that we need to extend the nose a little bit. So it was put on hold. I looked for another engine and came up with a toyota starlet engine .. maybe not all of your familiar with it. it's a L4 1.3l turbo charges engine it will fit the mini .. But I did't like it much coz of the lag.. I wanted a N/A engine so I got back to the V-TEC..

To Over some the front extended nose problem I simply places the engine at the back.. making the mini looks stock and RWD :D . So onces an engine is decided I went out looking for one.. I wanted to get a B16A engine which was 165HP and came with a cable gear .. Long story short. spend 2 weeks searching and did not find one.. I founded a better engine more powerful ... a B18C which is 185Hp and more torque I found it in a 1994 integra.. the car was in a bad shape but the engine was perfect .. I bough the car and took it to the garage only to discover that It got a hydraulic gear box.. I went and out and got my self a b16 cable gear box and hope it works well.. here are some pix.. of the my little project..

New pix will be added as project goes on.
PS: The proof or owership is the key on the roof for both cars the mini and the integra. ohh I forgot to put the key on the nissan but it is mini the supra is someone else but it looked cool.

Skimmed through reading this and saw B16 in Mini and thought a B18 would be cool and hell it is can't wait to see the pics when progress is over! and btw where the hell is that?!!? there is an R32 and two R33's in the SAME parkinglot!!! that is NEVER seen in the US!!!

Ehehhe....it's going to be a nice rocket!!!

And the great thing about the Vtec is that it hasn't much torque, that the Mini couldn't handle!

Keep posting the state of the project!

Finally you opened this topic :D I can't wait to see the final result :D

I will add the Mini picture to the registry right now, but don't you want to have there also the EVO?

What evo ??  ..LoL

The truth is I can't take any pix of the Evo right now with the key or manual coz the car is covered up.. Basicly the weather is very very hot and turbo and hot weather don't mix up so the Evo is hybernating thorough out summer :D under a shaded garage under a cover. And no one want's pix of the Nissan so I won't bother with it  .

Mopsdrops, That is not the belgium flag .lol..although looks like it but it's Mugen color thing.

SilviaEvo , well then what if I took some pix of the garage.. No Kidding but they got about 7 R34 GTR and 5 of them are converted to LHD..lol and by the way it will be a B18C not a B18B on the Mini

cooperluke , well some guys at the garage fear the car might flip over at full throttle or at high speed.. So I'm thinking of making some kind of limited top speed.. But tell me about the V-TEC I drove the integra for a while .. it got a mugen header and exhaust and the sound is amazing and pulls like crazy.

I can't wait for this project to end.
Thanks guys for your reply.

I sended a couple of emails to that company if they could supply me the kit but no reply at all so I just gave up on them. One thing I don't like is the gear on that thing.. Look how high it went.. They got a hydrolic gear box.. I would be working on a cable gear box and would have more room.

Thanks for the link anyway. :D

should be one crazy car indeed

can anyone say "power - weight"

Evo
07-17-2004, 08:17 AM
Well I don't really know the weight of the mini alone some one might have an exact figer but I could estimate with the engine in might get to 1200kg = 1.2 tonne so calculating that with the b18c power which is estimated 185hp .. I multiply 185x1 divide by 1.2 = 154 hp/tonne or 154hp per 1000kg.

Skyliner
07-18-2004, 05:23 PM
1200 kg??? My mini weights 585 kg and it its totally standard!! With 185 hp the power/weight ratio should be 250 hp/tonne or 1/4 hp per kg
It's the first time i've seen a mini with a V-tec put in the back.... But many versions have been made. Two companys in Britain makes a conversion kit with the engine in the front. But like you say, the front then needs to be extended (if it was a clubmann it would fit in). Z-cars makes a kit with a 160 hp Yamaha R1 engine in the back, which should be quite quick... And the even more wild with two R1 engines and 320 hp.... I've read about an turbocharged Hayabusa engine in the back of a mini producing +300 hp (don't remember the exact number). If i have time tomorrow i will scan the artictle (from MiniWorld)

Yes indeed, even with a big V8 a Mini should still be under the ton :D

T-Bird
07-18-2004, 05:47 PM
hell just drop a small block chevy in the rear and leave it at that, or put 2 bike engines in it one for the front one for the back kind of like a Mini Bimoto. Would a Honda H Six fit in there?

X-ale
07-18-2004, 08:00 PM
Couldn't it be possible to not extend the front but instead drive from back seats, kinda. I mean to extend in the dash toward the back?! :?

This Project have been stoped..
I will resume working on the mini for a V-Tec conversion in the summer. In the mean time their will be a surprice for the guys at JW in 1 month time.

small blocks n 2 engines, one in the front and one in the bac have been tried n havent been that succesful.

Best bet would be two bike engines in the back with a Z cars conversion.

Either that or take it to holeshot and get a 400bhp turbo charged busa engine in it, but that may be a lil extreme for road driving.

My mates thinking of having a bike engine conversion done n if i had a mini thats the way i'd go as its gives more power than a vtec, is easier to make rear wheel drive and its lighter.

Skyliner: u mean this lil beast? ;)

Indeed thats my main worry about all these bike engine mini's i mean the Z cars conversions i've seen (R1 engined conversion) use 14 inch wheels and putting 400 bhp though such small wheels i would think you'd be wheelspinning till christmas. Also the clutch is always gonna be tricky as in all bike engined cars, so town driving isn't gonna be easy IMO

mindgam3
09-17-2004, 07:15 AM
true 400bhp is a bit too much, but a 160/180bhp engine would be just perfect for road use with a good suspension set up. As for the clutch, i'm sure you'd get used to it ;)

Has you can probably see... if you know how to read, the second fastest car, was a Mini!! And it stayed at front of much powerful cars, such has EVOs, M3, Cosworths, RS... etc etc

I think lots of people underestimate Minis.. but that is about to change!! At least here in Portugal... in a year or two, I believe the Minis will leave the competitors behind in hillclimb competitions!
