Thanks for the article, it really would cause problems if Audi released the car being more poweful, faster and cheaper than the Gallardo! Only thing is the Audi doesn'y have the charisma or pedigree of the competitors.

It's sad that the car's specs are being determined by marketing objectives and not engineering limitations. I would like to think that when you buy a $100k car you get the best performing car that can be build for 100k minus a healthy profit margin. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be common practice in the automotive industry.

What bothers me the most is when companies charge EXTRA for additional displacement. A slightly larger bore or longer con rod does not make a motor more expensive.

Excuse me? Auto Union (Audi) has more racing pedigree than Lamborghini for sure. Hell, even Nuvolari drove for them.
